Valley Vikings Slip By Peru Tigers

AKRON - The host Tippecanoe Valley Vikings hit 18 of 19 free throws Friday night in a 49-46 win over Peru in the opening game of the No.22 (3A) sectional semifinal. And they needed every single one. Despite shooting 95 percent from the charity stripe and outrebounding the Tigers 25-12, the Vikings were a funny bounce on a Cameron Wooten three-pointer away from overtime. Valley even shot 60 percent from the field in the second half and the game was still in question. The problem was the Vikings attempted just five shots from the field in the final 16 minutes as they committed 16 turnovers and went to the free throw line 18 times. "At the end there we played not to lose," said Valley head coach Bill Patrick."What saved the game for us was we shot free throws well." Viking senior Shane Drudge was a one-man wrecking crew from the foul line as he went 12 of 12 on the night.

Balanced Scoring, Points In The Paint Push Tigers Past Panthers

Just as he did last week, Warsaw's Michael Wienhorst made his presence known in the paint. Only this time Tiger boys basketball coach Doug Ogle didn't get any heart-stopping heroics from the 6-foot-3 junior - he didn't need them. Wienhorst, who hit the winning free throw against Elkhart Memorial last Monday and the game-winning shot against Plymouth on Thursday, led a quartet of Tigers in double figures Tuesday evening as Warsaw scored at will in the paint and downed visiting South Bend Washington 77-63. Wienhorst, whose only visible evidence from a December knee injury is a black brace, scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and was 5 of 7 from the free throw line.He also added eight eight rebounds.

Triton Downs O-D

"She is one-third of our points and one-third of our rebounds," Triton girls basketball coach Mark Heeter said."That's a lot by one of 12 people." Triton met Oregon-Davis in the Culver Sectional Wednesday, and the Bobcats' plan was obvious as the 2-3 zone it stubbornly stayed in: Don't let Salyer beat us. Salyer didn't by herself, but she and her teammates did, as Triton (7-14) downed Oregon-Davis (5-14) 57-39. Oregon-Davis started with a 2-3 zone and stayed in a 2-3 zone until the final three minutes. The defense worked in the first half as they packed players around Salyer under the basket. She picked up her second foul with 7:09 to go in the second quarter, and rather than risk letting her pick up her third, Heeter put her on the bench until the third quarter. Triton led 25-22 at halftime.

Lancer Softball Team Returns Key Players

For the Grace College softball team, experience will be a key this year. In a conference in which first through seventh place were separated by just three games in the final standings, the Lancers will look to break out of the pack with a nucleus of six players who saw regular time in the lineup last year. Grace ended in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Mid-Central Conference at 7-7 overall, while Bethel won the MCC at 10-4.The Lancers also finished 16-18 on the season after opening with a 2-11 record. With every pitcher returning and four players who hit at least .328, there is reason for optimism.

Tigers Dominate Strong Regional Field, Advance To Semistate

HUNTINGTON - Shortly after she got a hug from her grandfather, and while her teammates celebrated with their families and posed for pictures, Jaclyn Leininger's response was as dead on as one of her three-point attempts. "Today was all about heart," the 6-foot smoothe-shooting Warsaw girls basketball player said after the second-ranked Tigers took it to No.9 Huntington North Saturday evening, winning the Huntington North 4A Regional championship game 64-47."We played so well as a team. You can tell by the results who wanted this the most." The end result, which came after a 57-47 win over No.10 Kokomo in the morning session's second semifinal game and a 17-point drubbing of the Vikings on their home floor in the title tilt, put Will Wienhorst's team in the semistate for the first time since 1991 when Indiana All-Stars Dana Creighton and Liza Reed and a freshman point guard named Jennifer Kintzel led the Tigers to a state runner-up finish.

DeKalb Derails Tiger Boys' Tournament Run

WATERLOO - A train that had been on the right track much of the season, Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team simply ran out of steam Saturday in the championship game of DeKalb 4A Sectional. Having to play their third game in four days, the seventh-ranked Tigers appeared fatigued in the latter stages of the game, falling 62-50 to No.5 DeKalb, a team that drew the bye and played just two games to win the title. "Truthfully, we ran out of gas with our traps," Warsaw coach Al Rhodes said."That, and we were never consistent on offense." The loss finishes Warsaw's season at 21-3.DeKalb, which won its first sectional since the days of Luke Recker and the one-class tournament, improved to 21-1.The Barons will play Anderson Saturday in the Marion Regioinal. Coupled with a second-quarter run by DeKalb, the Tigers did themselves in with poor shooting, hitting 22 of 52 shots overall and going 0 of 13 from the three-point arc.

Ignoring Cultural Decline

I saw an interesting snippet in USA Today this week. It was one of those little items from their Nationline column. It was about some guys in San Diego who were paying homeless men to beat each other up on videotape. They gave then cash, booze, food and shelter. In return, the bums got into knock-down drag-out fights and injured themselves in other bizarre ways in front of a camera. One homeless man pulls out his front tooth with a pair of pliers.Another rams his head into a steel door. At bumfights.com, you can see excerpts from the video and an interesting testimonial.

Revenge, Title For NorthWood

NAPPANEE - It took just 22 seconds for things to go sour for Lakeland Saturday in the girls basketball sectional championship against NorthWood. That's precisely how long it took for star forward Brooke Crawford to pick up her first foul of the game. Crawford, who fouled out of each of Lakeland's first two sectional games, ended up fouling out of this game with nine seconds to play in the third quarter, and NorthWood went on to rout the Lakers 59-39 to claim the Panthers' 11th consecutive sectional championship and 15th title in 20 years. For NorthWood, much of the defensive game plan was centered around stopping Crawford as Tiffany Glingle and LoriDawn Klotz frustrated her all night and kept her from scoring with reckless abandon as she has so many times this year.Crawford finished with just 12 points on 5 of 12 shooting and two rebounds.

Tigers Have Success On Senior Night

To some, it may seem like one of the simplest things to do in a game of basketball - make a free throw. Warsaw's boys basketball team made it look easy Friday night in a 53-46 win at home over Kokomo on senior night. The Tigers shot 29 of 34 (85.3 percent) from the charity stripe in pushing their overall season record to 16-4.Kokomo, who committed 25 fouls and made good on 6 of 11 charity tosses, finishes the regular season with a 13-7 record. Warsaw was whistled for eight fouls.

Another Leininger Leads Team To Indianapolis

She and her teammates certainly have enough material for a scrapbook of their own, and now Warsaw girls basketball standout Jaclyn Leininger says she wants to see her grandfather's. Though time has probably taken its toll on Kermit Leininger's scrapbook, yellowing the pages and such, its content is as colorful as ever. Seventy years ago, 20 years before Indiana legend Bobby Plump and tiny Milan High School won the boys basketball state championship, Kermit Leininger helped lead pint-sized Beaver Dam High School to back-to-back state finals appearances at Butler Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Jaclyn Leininger said Wednesday she didn't know exactly where Beaver Dam is, or that her grandfather's graduating class had but 12 students and the entire school just 50, but she certainly knows where her grandfather will be Saturday.

Zolman Carries Warriors To Sectional Title

SYRACUSE - A la Michael Jordan, Wawasee 5-foot-10 junior guard Shanna Zolman took control of Saturday's Wawasee 3A Sectional championship game against No.5 NorthWood. Zolman put her teammates on her shoulders, scoring all 19 of second-ranked Wawasee's fourth-quarter points, as the Warriors topped NorthWood 65-59. Wawasee is now 23-0 and will host Fort Wayne Concordia in Wednesday's one-game regional, while NorthWood, a team the Warriors have beat in four consecutive meetings, finishes the season with a 19-4 mark. NorthWood, the 1999 3A state champ, led 47-46 going into the fourth quarter, but Zolman said in post game interviews that she in no way was going to let her team lose. Zolman scored the first five points of the final frame, giving the Warriors a 51-47 lead with 6:21 remaining.NorthWood senior guard Cort Sandy came back with a pair of free throws to cut the lead to two, but a three-pointer and then four free throws gave Wawasee a 58-49 lead.

Zoners To Hear Request For Barn

The Warsaw Board of Zoning Appeals will revisit the request of Eric Wynn for a variance from developmental standards to construct an accessory structure 25 feet in height at 416 W.Center St. Wynn appeared before the BZA last month, saying he plans to relocate a barn. An investigation shows the proposed structure conforms to the zoning ordinance without a variance. It is 20 feet by 34 feet, or 680 square feet. New business includes a request by Living Stones Preschool, 315 Cedar St., for a variance from developmental standards for a daycare/preschool with no outdoor play area. The zoning ordinance calls for 55 square feet of outdoor play area per child. The petitioner has allowed for 900 square feet of indoor play area.Hours of operation would be 9 to 11:30 a.m.and noon to 2:30 p.m.with a maximum of 20 children attending the day care.

Triton Girls End Season In Regional Final

CULVER -ÊCulver's gym seems to be a home away from home for the Triton Lady Trojans. And why not it's a nice, sleepy, resort town during the summer. But February can get pretty cold and unfortunately the Trojans felt the chill on Saturday night falling to Fort Wayne Canterbury 48-45 in the 2A regional final. Triton began the day in a physical contest against South Newton where it prevailed 55-33.In its second game of the day it ran into super freshman Megan King of Canterbury. The state's third leading scorer at 27.6 per game put up with some freshman hazing from the Triton student cheering block with unneeded taunts of "Ball Hog" every time she touched the ball.

Quick-Hittin' Whitko Upends TV

PERU - For Whitko coach Fred Fields, it's the most wonderful time of the year.Fields knows sectional action well, as his numerous sectional titles at Huntington North as the girls coach can attest to.Fields helped the Wildcats to their first sectional win in two years with a 65-55 Tuesday win over Tippecanoe Valley in the opening round of the Peru Boys Basketball 3A Sectional.

Carroll Wins Rematch, Ends Warsaw Girls Season In Sectionals

COLUMBIA CITY - The smallest girl on the court, 5-foot-3 Carroll senior Abby Noll played the biggest role in downing fifth-ranked Warsaw Friday in the semifinal round of the Columbia City 4A Sectional. With Warsaw leading 21-20 at the half, Noll ignited the Chargers with a barrage of second-half three-pointers, leading Carroll to a 66-57 victory over the Tigers. Noll, who finished the evening 7 of 12 from the field overall, shot 4 of 5 from the arc in the second half, including a deep three with 2:08 remaining that gave the Chargers a 53-47 lead. "Noll's three that put them back up by six in the fourth was a big play," Wienhorst said."She's a very good basketball player. To go 5 of 9 (from the arc) at any level is remarkable, nonetheless to do it from where she was shooting from. Her toes weren't on the line, they were three or four feet back." Noll finished the game with 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Triton Grabs First Girls Sectional Title

CULVER - No matter what your opinion of class basketball is, it does do one thing. It gives teams that would normally not compete for a sectional championship a chance. An example was Saturday night's Culver girls sectional final of Triton against Argos.Neither school had ever won a girls sectional championship. Behind the strong play of its starting five, Triton captured that first sectional with a 62-56 win over the Dragons. Although Triton won, the game was in doubt until the final minute. After Argos' Angie Dunlap hit a jumper, Triton's lead was cut to 57-53.With Argos forced to foul, Triton hit their free throws to preserve the lead. The game didn't seem to be in so much doubt going into the fourth quarter. Triton had a 44-33 lead and for the first couple minutes of the quarter was able to keep that lead in double digits. Then Jennifer Yoder took over. She would score the Dragon's next 10 points and close Argos' deficit to 52-49.

Panthers Take Sectional 64-54

NAPPANEE -ÊGoing into the NorthWood Sectional, the Panthers had played all five of their possible opponents during the season. The Panthers lost to No.10 Lakeland, Angola and Northridge in regular-season play. Then NorthWood's boys basketball team avenged the loss to Lakeland with a 63-56 win in the first round of the sectional Tuesday. Then the Panthers got back at Angola with a 70-59 win in Friday's sectional semifinal. And finally, NorthWood downed Northridge 64-54 Saturday to win its first sectional since 1995.It is the just the second sectional championship in NorthWood history. Wrestlers Finish Season At State

The state championship finals for wrestling saw history made, as two competitors each earned first place for the fourth consecutive year. Alex Tsirtsis of Griffith beat all comers to earn a championship at 145 pounds, after titles the previous three years at 119 pounds, 130, and 135.Evansville Mater Dei's Blake Maurer was the champ at 171 pounds, having won previously at 130, 145, and 171 pounds. It's One And Done For Wawasee

NAPPANEE -ÊThe Wawasee Warriors' dreams of being the Cinderella story of the NorthWood sectional were crushed when they fell to West Noble 62-53 Thursday night. In a game that was much closer than the final score reflected, the Warriors started with a bang as Andrew Warner scored the first basket of the game to put the Warriors up 2-0 after less than one minute of play. However, West Noble answered with a basket of their own, and the shootout began. At the end of the first quarter, the score was knotted at 11, but West Noble's Mike Sparks netted a basket with 7:24 remaining in the first half to give the Chargers a slim lead. Jeremy High answered the West Noble basket with one of his own to tie the score at 13 with 5:42 left in the second frame, but West Noble scored two more baskets to take another lead that the Warriors would not be able to overcome by the end of the first half.
