Wawasee Girls Manage To Hold Off Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY - Rarely does a basketball game end, and both coaches are happy. But that was pretty much the case in the Wawasee-Whitko girls basketball clash Thursday. The Warriors came away with a 52-48 win over the Wildcats, which made Wawasee coach Mark Sumpter happy. But Whitko's effort in the second half in which the Wildcats outscored the Warriors 30-25 made Whitko mentor Ray Davis smile. Comments from both coaches were very similar after the game. "It is a good win," Sumpter said."It is a momentum-builder going into the sectional." "I talked to them after the game and told them that if they take that second-half effort into Carroll (Whitko's first-round sectional opponent) and play four quarters, we will be fine.We had some kids play well tonight, and we just have to get that for four quarters and not two," Davis said.

Independence Requires Vigilance

As we celebrate the July 4 holiday - Independence Day - I thought it might be interesting to take a look at some of the history surrounding that momentous document. Here are some details about the Declaration of Independence compiled by staffers at the Library of Congress. On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia in the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall), approved the Declaration of Independence. Its purpose was to set forth the principles upon which the Congress had acted two days earlier when it voted in favor of Richard Henry Lee's motion to declare the freedom and independence of the 13 American colonies from England. The Declaration was designed to influence public opinion and gain support both among the new states and abroad - especially in France, from which the new "United States" sought military assistance.

Whitko Proves To Be Tall Task

SOUTH WHITLEY - Whitko's game plan going into Friday's game with Triton was as basic as it gets: Make sure the tall guys shoot the ball. A Whitko boys basketball team with four players between 6-foot-3 and 6-5 did exactly that against a Triton team with no players taller than 6-1.The result? Whitko won 65-40. Six-foot-3 forward Bo Mullins hit 6 of 7 shots and scored 17.Jeremiah Laws, a 6-5 forward, hit 6 of 8 shots and scored 14.Kevin Miller, a 6-5 forward, hit 6 of 9 shots and scored 17.Jered Deckena, a 6-5 forward, hit 3 of 3 and scored six. The four players combined made 21 of 27 field goals and tallied 54 of Whitko's 65 points.

Ellis Going In Head First

It was an honor that Stephanie Ellis had been waiting four years to have. An unofficial tradition of the record-setters of the Warsaw High School swim program is taking down the old record and putting the new record up on the board hanging beside the Community Pool. Ellis broke the six-dive record for the Warsaw girls' program last year, but because the board was being cleaned and the numbers and names were taken off, she didn't get the opportunity. So on Monday, after breaking the 11-dive record at the Warsaw Sectional Saturday, Ellis climbed the ladder set up by pool superintendent Mel Weaver, took the old record down one letter at a time, and put up "S.Ellis, 460.60." "It has always been a goal," Ellis said of the record."I have seen it there since I was a freshman.I broke the six-dive record last year, and I really wanted to get the 11-dive record this year.

Kevin, Darrell Carr Win Semistate Titles

FORT WAYNE - The Wawasee wrestlers are beginning to make people stand up and notice what kind of team they have this year - both together and apart. The Warriors will get the chance to show as individuals what they can do with three wrestlers going to next Saturday's state meet, two of whom won their weight classes at the Fort Wayne Semistate Saturday. Brothers Kevin (125) and Darrell (135) Carr, along with Shaun Belin (152), will be making the trip to Market Square Arena to strut their stuff. The Carrs won their weight classes, while Belin was third. Wawasee sent eight wrestlers to the semistate, including four regional champions.

It's Tough To Migrate To The U.S.

I suppose I should weigh in the issue of immigration since that seems to be the hot issue of the day. I wonder who gets to decide what the hot issue is. I mean, is immigration a bigger problem now than it was in 2005? 2000? 1990? 1980? I seem to remember immigration being a big issue during Reagan's presidency. But why all the attention on it now? Sometimes I think our government officials try to divert our attention from other issues. I think they'd rather have the media doing stories on immigration instead of the Iraq war, gas prices, the deficit, nukes in Iran, Hamas vs.Israel or a whole list of other issues. But since immigration is the hot issue, here's my two cents. Seems to me part of the problem is the degree of difficulty involved in becoming a U.S.citizen. Looks to me like immigration laws were written to discourage people from coming here.

Viking Girls Fall Short At Regional

MONTICELLO -ÊIt wasn't the story book ending the Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team would have liked, but it sure made for an entertaining afternoon at the Twin Lakes Regional. After falling behind by 14 points in the first quarter, Tippecanoe Valley fought back to get to within two points of Highland. However, the Vikings were not able to make a complete comeback and fell to the Trojans 49-46. "One possession either way could have changed the outcome," said Valley coach Gary Teel. Highland started off on the right foot by netting two straight three-pointers to take a 6-0 lead. Valley's Sherise Denny sliced that lead in half when she hit a trey at the 5:13 mark, but the quarter belonged to Highland. The Trojans outscored Valley 11-2 in the last five minutes of the first quarter and held a 17-5 advantage going into the second frame of play.

Kids Don't Know Just How Good They Have It

It's fun to listen when kids give their version of the world. No matter how good they have it, they'd like you as a parent to believe they're overworked and generally mistreated. Ask the average 10-year-old to clean up his room.He looks at you as if you're some kind of monster. He slowly, laboriously starts putting his stuff away.He drags articles of clothing along the floor, walking with a slight stoop, as if dog tired. Five minutes later, when the arduous task is completed, the fatigue completely leaves him.He runs out of the house - smiling, rejuvenated - ready for a few hours of hard play. But really, that's what being a child should be.There should be no crushing responsibility, no severe hardships.Childhood should be - more than anything else - fun. But many childhoods today aren't fun.Even in the U.S.kids are dealing with all sorts of fears, worries and pressures. And worldwide, children fare much worse.

Wawasee Girls Step To Forefront

SYRACUSE - Surprisingly, the coach picks up the phone. The state swim finals are more than 100 miles away but less than 12 hours away. But Wawasee coach Roger Karns' baritone voice is on the other end of the line in a rare free moment. And he does mean moment. When asked if he has time to answer a few questions about the upcoming state finals, Karns says, "Yeah, about a minute." The Wawasee Warriors scored 404 points and nabbed eight of 12 first places in last Saturday's Warsaw Sectional. The 404 points doubled second-place Plymouth.

Warsaw Boys Advance To Title Game

KENDALLVILLE - Playing in Class 4A Sectional 5, Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team got a clutch performance from the senior wearing jersey No.5. Fueled by Shaun Cabrera's 19 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals, Warsaw rallied to defeat host East Noble 58-52 in the first of two semifinal games Friday. Columbia City defeated conference rival DeKalb, the defending sectional champion, 48-39 in the second semifinal game. Warsaw and Columbia City will meet in the championship game tonight at 7:30 p.m.for the right to play in next Saturday's Marion Regional against the winner of the Anderson Sectional.

Journalists Think About These Things

Just the other day one of our writers used the phrase "a myriad of." As in, "They will receive a myriad of knowledge." Now, I was always taught in journalism school - lo these 2.5 decades ago - that "myriad" was an adjective. It couldn't be a noun. So I informed the writer that he had misused the word myriad in his story. "Myriad is an adjective, I told him."You can't use it as a noun. The correct usage is 'they will receive myriad knowledge,' not 'a myriad of knowledge.'" I was confident, haughty, authoritative. "Are you sure, because I'm used to seeing it 'a myriad of?'" the staffer asked. "Yes, you see it that way all the time, but that's wrong," I assured him. Despite my lofty level of certainty I decided to follow the advice of James J.Kilpatrick, a top-rate wordsmith and once one of the most widely syndicated political columnists in the country. Kilpatrick admonished writers to be careful, to always be sure of facts and grammar.

Cold-Shooting Warriors Fall To Lakers

NAPPANEE - The first game in the Northwood Boys 3A Sectional pitted Wawasee (6-14) against Lakeland (6-11).Wawasee hadn't been playing like a sub-.500 team the last month. In the Warriors' last game they gave a ranked Bremen team its worst loss of the season. The sectional was a different story.Wawasee struggled from the field and ended its season with a 55-51 loss to Lakeland. Wawasee got off to a slow start against Lakeland and spent the entire second half crawling back into the game.An Andrew Warner short jumper brought the Warriors to within six at 54-49 with just under 30 seconds left to play. When Justin Anderson hit 1 of 2 free throws, that shut the door on a Wawasee comeback. The fact that Wawasee had a chance to win at the end is surprising in itself. The Warriors began the fourth quarter trailing 37-22.The Warriors had struggled from the field all game long, only managing to score in double digits in the second quarter.

H. North's One-Man Team Can't Carry Vikings Past Warsaw

In 6-foot-7 junior forward Sean Kline, Huntington North has one of the top boys basketball players in the state.Schools like Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Purdue are chasing the athletic Kline, who averages 22.4 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. But with Kline, who has set the school record in points in a season with 579, Huntington North entered Thursday's game at Warsaw with a 9-8 record. As good as Kline is, problem is, the only other Viking who scores more than 4.5 points per game is senior reserve forward Brett Hoopingarner, who averages 8.4. And once the Tigers grabbed the lead, the Vikings didn't have the offensive firepower to catch up.Warsaw (14-4), which snagged its first lead at 27-26 with 1:56 left in the second quarter, kept it the rest of the way en route to a 72-57 win.

Triton Has No (Cody) New Answers

BOURBON - With 3:02 left in Thursday's game, Triton senior Eric Disher looked at coach Joe Bennett helplessly and shrugged his shoulders as if to say, what else can I do? The answer was nothing.Neither he nor any of his Triton teammates could do anything on this night to stop 6-foot-2 Tippecanoe Valley senior Cody New. New scored 26 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and passed out five assists as the Vikings led from start to finish in beating Triton's boys basketball team 72-57.Senior Andy Martin scored 15, and sophomore Trey Eaton, who left briefly in the first quarter with a dislocated finger, added 14. "Cody's a pretty good player," Valley coach Bill Patrick said."When Cody stays within the offense and his shot selection is good, he moves well.He really hasn't taken a bad shot for two games now." Triton coach Joe Bennett was just the latest opposing coach to run into the New problem.

Sophomore Leads Valley On Senior Night

AKRON - It wasn't a typical Tippecanoe Valley performance. The Vikings shot less than 50 percent from the field. Valley looked out of sync on defense. But in the end, it was a typical Viking result. Valley topped an upsart Triton squad 61-47 Friday night in non-conference boys basketball action as the Vikings celebrated senior night and their last regular season home game. While Valley's five seniors started the game, it was a sophomore who kick-started the team. Six-foot-one Chad Hoffer went 9 of 12 from the field as he finished with 22 points. Hoffer scored 17 points over the course of the second and third quarters as the Vikings extended a four-point lead after one quarter to 15 heading into the final eight minutes.

Freedoms Aren't Always What Founding Fathers Intended

Wednesday evening while I was watching the fireworks over Syracuse Lake I was thinking about what the July Fourth holiday represents. Independence. Independence is defined as "not being controlled by someone else" or "self-governing." When we talk about independence, we invariably talk about freedom, too. They go hand in hand. Americans enjoy the greatest level of freedom and independence of any people in history. That's because our founding fathers wanted it that way. They knew what it was like to live under an oppressive government and they wanted to be sure the fledgling nation they were creating wouldn't be that way. They crafted a Declaration of Independence and a Constitution that fostered and furthered the concepts of freedom and independence. Wise as they were, they never could have imagined how that fledgling nation and government would evolve.

Tigers Win Second Straight Sectional

SYRACUSE -ÊThe Warsaw Tigers won their first back-to-back gymnastics sectional title in school history Saturday at Wawasee High School behind a strong performance from Jillian Letsch. Letsch, a sophomore, won her second all-around title in a row at Wawasee with a total score of 34.45.She placed first on the uneven bars and the balance beam and second in the floor exercise and vault competitions. Callie Edgington finished close behind Letsch, placing fourth in the all-around competition with a 32.1 total score.Edgington placed third on the balance beam, fourth on the uneven bars, fifth in the vault and 11th on the floor exercise to earn her spot in the all-around competition. The four-person Warsaw squad was rounded out by Amanda Rice and Shyloh Hoy, who placed ninth and 24th respectively in the all-around category.

Tigers Send 3 To State

Warsaw sends three wrestlers to compete in tonight's state finals at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. At 152 pounds, Matt Zellers, with a record of 37-3, reached the finals by taking first place at the New Haven semistate in the Fort Wayne Coliseum.Ê Adam Harter (112) takes a 35-8 record to the state finals, along with Joey Navarro (275), whose season record is 36-6. These Tigers have been hard at work in the practice room with quite a few other team members.Although for them the regular season is over, they are looking ahead to the upcoming freestyle season, and several are serving as sparring partners for Warsaw's three state competitors.Harter is working with Tim Roe and the two Milton brothers, Nate and John.Zellers practices with Adam Galvin, Richard Wolfe and Isaac Perry.Navarro is being tag-teamed by Steve McKinley, Kris Hueber, Joel Burner and coach Steve Ferber.
