The Tigers dominated the junior varsity contest 45-8 before the varsity Tigers overwhelmed the Redskins 47-28. Sara Parker scored Warsaw's two first points on two free throws, giving the Tigers a lead they never relinquished.Parker finished the opening frame with three points and eight in the game.Tiger sophomore Kara Kesler led all scorers with 10 points, the first time she's led the team in scoring.Goshen was led by Steph Mast's seven points.

Eaton's Buzzer-Beater Carries Valley Past Oak Hill

AKRON -ÊAs the season progresses, Tippecanoe Valley, and especially its star Trey Eaton, will find teams playing them more physically. It's a common tactic employed by teams with the hope of disrupting a player or team's offense. Oak Hill bodied up and bullied Eaton and his teammates all night and it worked on Eaton for 31:59. The 6-foot-4 guard/forward looked frustrated and out of step most of the game.He shot only 8 of 21 from the field. That didn't matter however when the layup he put down as time expired gave Valley a 56-55 win over the Golden Eagles. With 9.3 seconds left to play and down by one, Valley coach Bill Patrick called a timeout. The Vikings came out of the timeout with the inbounds at half court. "We had Trey come off a screen by (Shane) Drudge. He got the shot off and normally would have made it," said Patrick.

Vikings Take Control In TRC

AKRON -ÊGoing into Friday night, the Manchester Squires and the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings knew what was riding on their basketball game: a share of the Three Rivers Conference. With a Valley win, the Vikings would secure at least a share of the conference title. With a Manchester victory, the Squires still would have a chance at a portion of the title. The Vikings squelched the Squires' slim hope of a portion of the TRC with a 55-44 win. Manchester jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the first quarter before Valley started to make a run.Craig Kuhn, Trey Eaton and Brandon Eaton combined to score the next six points to take an 8-7 lead. The Squires and Vikings traded baskets until the end of the quarter. After one period of play, the Vikings held a 12-11 lead.

No. 5 Kokomo Whips Warsaw

At a time when the Warsaw girls basketball team probably needs rest more than anything, the Tigers are getting just the opposite. After playing the No.1 team in Class 3A on Tuesday, Warsaw had to lace up the sneakers again for another top-ranked team Saturday for the No.5 (4A) Kokomo Wildkats. And just like their matchup with NorthWood, the Wildkats showed why they are one of the best teams in the state with a 63-38 win Saturday night at the Tiger Den. The Tigers trailed the Wildkats just 38-30 midway through the third quarter.Warsaw had several chances to cut even further into the lead, but couldn't quite cash in.Kokomo wasn't exactly taking control of the game at that point either. But after Warsaw's missed chances, Kokomo got hot and went on a 13-0 run into the fourth quarter to put the game away. The Tigers, in fact, scored only eight points the remainder of the game.

Bow Hunters Selected For Deer Reduction Effort

Bow hunters who will assist in deer reduction efforts in Warsaw for the next three weeks have been selected. Four of the hunters who were selected began hunting in declared nuisance zones Monday and one deer was taken, according to Deer Task Force chair Jeff Grose. There were 27 hunters who attended a training session Dec.2 at the Warsaw Police Department to qualify to hunt in declared deer nuisance zones in Warsaw. The potential hunters were required to fill out an application form and have an approved background check conducted by the WPD. The hunters also were required to attend the training session at the department to learn about bow hunting safety, reduction zones, and bow hunting guidelines and rules and regulations for the reduction effort. There were 20 of the 27 hunters who were notified by phone Dec.15-16 by the task force management committee informing them they were selected, Grose said.

Grace Takes Off Vs. Taylor

WINONA LAKE - Granted, Grace College caught Taylor University in the midst of the its worse stretch of the season. That doesn't taint the Lancers' performance Tuesday one bit. Grace broke away from a tie game with a 17-2 run late in the second half and got a 66-51 decision at the Lancer Gym Tuesday in a big Mid-Central Conference win. With the 15-point win, Grace avenged an earlier 23-point win by Taylor (67-44) this season, making it a 38-point reversal. Taylor, who was simply dominating opponents early in the conference schedule, dropped its third straight MCC contest.Grace pulled to within one game of Taylor for third place in the MCC with a 6-5 conference record.Taylor is 7-4. The score was tied at 45 with 7:45 left when the Lancers decided to speed the tempo up a little bit.The result was outscoring the Trojans by 15 points over the next six minutes to gain a 62-47 lead.

Triton Tops Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊOn a night when Ashli Senff set a new career scoring record, Triton picked up a 56-41 win over the Manchester Squires. However, the outcome of the game was not always so cut-and-dried. After one quarter of play, Triton held a 9-2 lead, but Manchester caught fire in the second frame. After Triton's Ashley Zelt hit a free throw, Manchester's Casey Thomas nailed a three-pointer and her teammate Britt Rager hit a basket to cut Triton's lead to three, 10-7. Senff and Gina Westafer hit back-to-back baskets to increase the Trojan lead to seven, 14-7, but Manchester roared back again. Megan Hoch hit a free throw and Sarah Purdy netted a basket to cut the lead back down to four, 14-10, with 2:51 left in the first half. In the final few minutes of the second quarter, Manchester and Triton played even. That is, until Thomas sank a three-pointer with just over a second left in the frame to make it a one-point game at the half, 17-16 in Triton's favor.

Tigers Hit Century Mark Vs. Memorial

Warsaw found the perfect defense to Elkhart Memorial's potent offense - simply outscore them. The Crimson Chargers entered Saturday's game at the Tiger Den averaging over 75 points a game, but it was the Tigers' offense that was clicking on all cylinders. Warsaw continued its hot shooting, hitting on 41 of 57 from the field (72 percent) in burying Memorial 100-66.It marks the first time Warsaw has hit the century mark in a game since 1995. "We started off this year trying to come with a varsity defense," Warsaw coach Al Rhodes said."Our offense has come a long way since the Elkhart Central (first) game. The one thing we have done all year is shoot a tremendous field goal percentage.Even though we have turned the ball over a lot, that is why we have still been able to win.

Hot-Shooting Valley Vanquishes Wabash

WABASH - Valley's performance against Wabash could be summed up with two names: JayDee Parker and Eric Love. The two combined to score 50 points, with Parker scoring 29 of them, as Valley cruised over Wabash 77-67 Friday night. The first quarter was a foreshadowing of what was to come from Valley.Off the opening tip, Love came down the court and nailed a three. He added another five points in the first quarter to help Valley to a 17-9 first-quarter lead. Wabash was led early and often by J.R.Hensley.Hensley picked up the offensive slack for the Apaches by pouring in 13 first-half points. Despite Hensley's scoring, Valley refused to relinquish their lead. When Love began to miss from the field, Parker stepped up.Parker had 13 points in the second quarter, but Wabash continued to hang around.

Mothers Deserve Their Day

Sunday is Mother's Day. I think it's highly appropriate that mothers have a day. They deserve it. I consider myself fortunate to have three great moms in my life - my mother, my wife and my mother-in-law. All three of them are wonderful people. My mother is one of the kindest people I know. She can be firm when she needs to, but she's really a softie deep down. She spends a great deal of her time helping others. It's what seems to make her happiest. You know the stereotype about the overbearing mother-in-law? Nothing could be further from the truth in my case.My mother-in-law is humble, sweet and caring. Both of these women are in their 80s.They're octogenarians.I lovingly refer to them as "the octos." Then there's my wife, Mary.Sometimes I think our kids don't realize how good they have it.They couldn't have asked for a better mother. Just this week, our son came home from college for the summer. You should have seen the twinkle in Mary's eyes.

It's Funny What We Say Sometimes

How cool is the Internet? The other day in the newsroom we were wondering about some of the common phrases we routinely use without really thinking about it. I mean, we really say some dumb things, don't we? Ever lose something, like, say, your keys? You bemoan the inconvenience and vent your frustration a bit by telling a friend or relative about it. Invariably, they ask? "Well, where'd you leave them?" I always want to say, "Of course! Why didn't I think of that? In the glove box, that's where I left them, thanks!" How about, "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it."I understand what it means, but really, how could you possibly cross the bridge before you came to it? Same with "have your cake and eat it too."I know what it means, but when you think about it, it's just senseless. So then the conversation degenerated, or, should I say, intellectually escalated into the origins of some of the silly things we say.

Neither Flu Nor Whitko Can Slow Zolman

SYRACUSE - Shanna Zolman's legend continues to grow. As the old story goes, Michael Jordan had to be helped off the floor by Scottie Pippen. In an NBA Finals game against the Utah Jazz Jordan scored 55 points despite fighting off the flu and a near 100-degree temperature.Thursday night Zolman, Wawasee freshman and the state's leading scorer, played under similar conditions. While fending off a flu that has plagued her the last few days, Zolman scored 30 points, 18 in the second half, to lead the Warriors over Whitko 54-50.Michelle Lamb and Kara Price added eight points each in the win that improved Wawasee's overall record to 14-6.Whitko was led in scoring by Tisha Rowland's 14 points.Monica Sands came off the bench to score 12 and pull down eight rebounds.

Vikings Win Sectional

OSSIAN - Tippecanoe Valley's girls basketball team has become the avengers of 2006. After avenging an earlier loss to Elmhurst Friday to advance to the championship game of the Norwell Sectional, the Vikings overtook the host Knights 36-35 Saturday, winning their fourth sectional championship in five years and advancing to the Peru Regional. Norwell, which beat Valley 71-70 in last year's sectional title game, beat Wayne 63-28 and Peru 57-28 to advance to the final game. "We wanted to come out and stop the run they had on us last year," said Valley coach Gary Teel."In the championship game last year they went up 15-0 and threw our whole game plan out the window. This year we wanted to keep that from happening." Rachel Sitts picked up two quick fouls in the first quarter and had to be sat.Jessica Rice entered the game and also picked up two fouls. The game's pace remained the same.It was a tough, physical game between the two teams.

Eagles Chill Tigers

The trend held true. In the war known as the Columbia City-Warsaw girls' basketball rivalry, the team that wins the regular season battle and enters the sectional as the more experienced, higher-regarded team is the one that tends to come out as the loser in the postseason. The Eagles, with only two starters back from last year, avenged a pair of one-point losses to the Tigers (58-57 in last year's sectional and 45-44 in this year's regular season) with a 54-39 win in the semifinals of the Warsaw Sectional Thursday. With four starters back from last year's sectional championship team, it was Warsaw that was expecting big things this year and with a young team, it was Columbia City that looked to be rebuilding this season. That fits the profile to a tee.

On The Court

GARY WIRT AT WARSAW TIPOFF: 8 p.m.Friday COACHES: Omar Vazquez (Gary Wirt), Al Rhodes (Warsaw) RECORDS: Wirt 4-11, Warsaw 15-3 LAST GAME: Andrean 62, Wirt 38; Warsaw 81, NorthWood 67 MATCHUP: ...Warsaw, already having clinched at least a tie for the Northern Lakes Conference championship, starts getting ready for the state tournament with two non-conference tuneups, starting with Gary Wirt. The Troopers started the season like the Tigers in having lost all five of their starters from a year ago.Unlike most Gary teams, Wirt teams are patient and deliberate on offense. The big concern for Warsaw will be handling Wirt's 6-10 Brandon Donaldson (9.6 points per game) in the middle.

Pilgrims 'Wise' To Tigers' Way

PLYMOUTH - Jack Edison is the master of the understatement. After watching his Plymouth Pilgrims dismantle Warsaw 87-66, hold the hot-shooting Tigers to 22 of 47 shooting and force them into 24 turnovers, he just thought Warsaw had an off night. "It wasn't really anything we did," Edison said."They just missed some shots they normally hit. They had some open shots, and they wouldn't drop. Then we got the lead at the start and it stayed there." With the win, Plymouth ended Warsaw's seven-game winning streak and handed the Tigers their first Northern Lakes Conference loss of the season.Warsaw can still gain a share of the NLC title with a win over NorthWood Feb.12, but Plymouth can get the other piece of the pie with wins over Concord and Goshen.

Tigers Favored To Win Sectional?

In an interview Tuesday afternoon, Warsaw boys swim coach Chris LaLonde was asked the same question at least five different ways. And five different ways she answered the question the same. The question: Who is the favorite to win this year's Wawasee Sectional? LaLonde's answer: Warsaw, of course. The Tigers enter Thursday's preliminary round of the sectional with an 11-1 record.Warsaw's lone loss came Jan.15, an 111-75 decision to Northern Lakes Conference rival Northridge, a team that swam to a 6-0 record in the NLC. LaLonde listed Warsaw, Bremen and Wawasee to finish one, two, three. A year ago it was Bremen swimming to the sectional championship, with 10 points the distance between it and the second-place Tigers. How close will it be this year, LaLonde was asked. "Ten to 15 (points), if we swim the way we have and improve after our taper," said LaLonde, her sixth year with the Tigers.

Warrior Gymnasts Defeat Squires

SYRACUSE - After the gymnastics meet between the Wawasee Warriors and Manchester Squires, both coaches talked about using the competition as a learning experience. "Our varsity was not as as dynamic, with the exception of Angi Beer, tonight as it normally is," said Nika Prather, Wawasee head coach."We had a better meet overall at Elkhart Memorial last week. "Tonight we had several stops on the bars that we don't normally have, and we were shaky on the beam." Wawasee won 92.7-74.75. Beer led all competitors last night, earning first place on each of the apparatus: beam, floor exercise, uneven bars, and vault.Because she was first in each category, she also won first place in the all-around category.Megan Goshert led the Manchester squad, placing third in the all-around competition by placing second on the beam and third in the floor exercise. Like many other schools, both the Warriors and the Squires were battling illness and injury.

Wawasee Gets First NLC Win In Davis Era

SYRACUSE - Wawasee coach Jerry Davis talked this week about how his team had to do a better job of closing out basketball games in the final three minutes. Last weekend, his Warriors twice fell in the closing moments.Friday night, however, Wawasee completed the game with a flurry in defeating Concord 62-59 for the first NLC win in Davis' two-year tenure as coach of the Warriors. "I'm not saying that this is going to get us over the hill, but now we know what we've got to do, and the difference between what we've been doing and what we did tonight," Davis said."You can practice it all you want, but you've got to carry it over into the game." Wawasee got help from a number of places up and down the lineup. With Brody Stipp still feeling the effects of a car accident on Sunday, the Warriors were a bit shorthanded inside.Stipp played some, but did not start and did not get as much playing time as usual.
