Warriors Too Much For Squires Again

When Wawasee and Manchester met each other in a regular season tennis match just nine days ago, neither team realized that they would be squaring off against each other again so soon. But because of an unkind draw that pitted two of the top teams in the sectional against each other, the Warriors and Squires battled in the first match of the sectional Thursday. On May 13, Wawasee jumped out on top of Manchester early in beating the Squires 5-0.The Warriors won 10 out of 11 sets that day. Thursday wasn't much different.Manchester started stronger than the first time and the Warriors never really controlled the match early the way they did just over a week earlier. But Wawasee righted itself quickly and swept Manchester again 5-0, winning 10 of 12 sets this time. Manchester actually came into the match with the best record in the sectional, while Wawasee had the second-best.However, two of Manchester's four losses ended up coming from the Warriors.

Warsaw's previous high school, the current Lakeview Middle School and where Central Park is, also were named Fisher Field. The Tigers also honored their 25 seniors Friday night. It was Homestead senior quarterback/safety Jordan Wise, however, who received the most kudos. Wise completed 14 of 21 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns as he shredded Warsaw's secondary and eluded the Tigers' pass rush all night.

Rodriguez, Hill Carry Mustangs To Win

Thunder and lightning.Power and speed. Exact opposites in terms of their running styles, Ron Rodriguez and Jon Hill proved to be the winning combination for the Kosciusko County Mustangs Saturday afternoon. While the burly, broad-shouldered Rodriguez provided the thunderous power, Hill came back with lightning quick speed.Together they led the Mustangs to a convincing 28-7 win over the visiting Darke County Warriors in Interstate Football League Week 3 action at Fisher Field at Lakeview Middle School. Rodriguez struck first, pounding his way in from four yards out to give the Mustangs a 7-0 advantage after Tom Martinez's extra-point kick split the uprights with 6:34 remaining in the opening quarter. He found pay dirt again 13 seconds later after teammate Shaun Craft's hit on Darke County's kick returner jarred the ball loose, sending it into the air and then into Rodriguez's hands.

Hensley's Right Arm Helps Carry Triton Into State Finals

Tyler Hensley doesn't have the stuff of Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez. For that matter, arguably no one else in the major leagues does, either. Triton High School's Hensley doesn't need Martinez's stuff. He often dominates high school hitters the way it is now, and Triton coach Jim Shively believes Hensley may be the only player in this weekend's Class A state finals capable of dominating a game by himself. The numbers back Shively. Hensley, 11-4 with a 1.58 ERA, will start for Triton (22-10) in its Friday first-round Class A state finals game against No.3 Madison Shawe (30-4). He throws four pitches, a mid-80s mph fastball, cut fastball, curve and changeup. Martinez influenced one of his pitches.

Warsaw Finishes Fifth

FORT WAYNE - The Homestead Golf Regional at Chestnut Hills Golf Course on Friday was a pretty good image of the Warsaw Tigers season. The Tigers started slowly and finished with a flurry, as they put a scare into the top teams at the regional but came up just a bit short. Warsaw ended fifth with a 336, nine shots behind both DeKalb and East Noble.DeKalb won the competition on a tie-breaker.Elkhart Central ended third with a 330 to qualify for the state finals. Cook Closes In On Fifth Indiana Open Title

A month removed from winning the state championship with his Warsaw Community High School teammates, Troy State-bound Jake Brodhead is again on the links with some of the best competition in the state. Only this tournament, the 90th annual Indiana Open at Stonehenge Golf Club, is different. While Brodhead, who shot 4-over par 75 in Wednesday's third round, and his Tiger teammates reeled in the leading teams at the IHSAA state tournament, the individual leaders at the Indiana Open aren't cracking. "These pros in this tournament are good," said Brodhead, who rode around the course Wednesday on a cart with his grandfather, Rich Hayes, and who sits tied for 29th at 9-over 222."They just know how to get around. For one thing, they don't take any doubles. They don't make any mistakes." Indianapolis' Jeff Cook entered Wednesday's round tied for the lead with Alan Schulte of Fishers.

No Mustache Means No Earnhardt

INDIANAPOLIS - There are some things about certain athletes that just make them stand out among others in their respective professions. Who couldn't spot that basketball player with the bald dome and wagging tongue and not know it was Michael Jordan? Most people have seen the way Sammy Sosa and Ken Griffey Jr.play the game of baseball with a splash of vibrant youth, not to mention their hard to miss ear-to-ear smiles. In the world of stock car racing, seven-time Winston Cup Champion Richard Petty will always be known for his tall cowboy hat, big belt buckle, cowboy boots and an unforgettable smile partially covered up by his moustache. Dale Earnhardt, also a seven-time Winston Cup Champion, was also well known for his mustache and greeting smile. I have an 8-by-10 picture of Earnhardt, the man more commonly known to the fans as the "Intimidator."In the picture he has a grin from ear to ear and a smile that could speak a thousand words.

Tigers Sweep Conference Rival Plymouth

It was Warsaw's battery that powered the Tigers to a win Monday night. Senior pitcher Matt Ransbottom threw a complete game three-hitter and sophomore catcher Braden Kline hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that sparked a four-run inning to give Warsaw a 6-2 victory in Northern Lakes Conference baseball action Monday night against Plymouth. Warsaw beat the Pilgrims earlier in the year in Plymouth 15-4.It's the first time Warsaw has swept Plymouth since 2003 when the Tigers went 14-0 in the NLC. The Tigers struggled early against Plymouth pitcher Chad Clinton, who entered the contest with a 3-0 record and a 2.01 ERA in 24-1/3 innings pitched. Slick Leonard Tells Tales At Local Country Club

LEESBURG - Bobby Leonard can talk. It's what he's paid to do as the Indiana Pacers' radio analyst. But it's what comes natural to him, what he loves to do. He can talk Larry Bird and snakes and how a game of gin in West Virginia earned him the nickname "Slick." "I'm a storyteller," he said."You have to liven up the joint." In this case, the joint was the Tippecanoe Lake Country Club, as Leonard was there Wednesday to speak at the J.Homer Shoop Scholarship Luncheon. Dressed in a blue jacket, tan slacks and a tie with blue and red diagonal stripes, Leonard wore a perpetual open-mouthed grin on his face. Blount Salvages Top 10 Finish

TOLEDO, Ohio - Driving a race that turned pit road and the garage area into what looked like a salvage yard, ML Motorsports driver Chad Blount was able to salvage a top 10 finish Sunday. Piloting the No.67 Mary Louise Miller-owned Monte Carlo, Blount finished ninth in Sunday's Hantz Group 200 ARCA RE/MAX Series race at Toledo Speedway. Blount, who entered Sunday's short-track battle at the half-mile Ohio speedway after finishes of first, first and second, respectively, in his last three races, felt his car was better than a ninth-place car. However, the 25-year-old driver wasn't able to completely overcome a day filled with rain delays, wrecks and caution laps.

Warsaw Golf Sectional Set For Saturday

And a freshman shall lead them. It doesn't take long to figure out the difference from the Warsaw golf team's 0-4 start this season to its current mark of 15-5.The emergence of freshman Justin Howell has gone a long way in leading the Tigers' turnaround. "Howell has really come on strong the second half of the season," Warsaw golf coach Bob Turner said."He is probably a key to a reason why our score has been getting down. The last few rounds he has been in the 30s." Turner knew Howell's potential when he came into the Tiger program; it was just a matter of Howell getting the experience of playing at the varsity level.
