Warsaw Plays Big Role In Football All-Star Game

To say the least, Saturday's North/South All-Star football game at Indianapolis North Central High School will be sprinkled with local flavor. For starters, Biomet Inc., will again sponsor the game, giving it the official title Biomet North/South All-Star Game. After guiding Warsaw Community High School to a 17-4 record the last two seasons with two Northern Lakes Conference championships and a near-win over powerful Penn, Tiger coach Phil Jensen has been selected by the Indiana Football Coaches Association to guide the North Team. "To be able to represent the Warsaw community and all the players is just a real honor for me," said Jensen, who has turned around the Tiger program and gone 32-21 the past five seasons."With Kris (Hueber) being there, and Biomet sponsoring it, it makes it that much more special." Playing linebacker for the North team will be recent Warsaw graduate Kris Hueber, who will play college ball at Manchester.

Squires Lose First Game With Baker As Coach

North Manchester - New Manchester head football coach Brandon Baker will have to wait at least another week before he can celebrate his first win at the helm of the Squires.Mississinewa was able to move the ball and shut down Manchester en route to a 35-9 win. Senior quarterback Joe Egner went 18 of 37 for just 98 yards as the Squires adjusted to a new spread offense brought in by Baker. Egner did connect with Jared Barrett on a 9-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Running back Nate Stoops was solid for the Squires, rushing for 71 yards on 17 carries.Stoops also had nine tackles to tie a team high with Jason Dale. Wawasee, Howell Advance To State Meet

FORT WAYNE - Although the director of the movie "Twister" never shot any scenes of golfers during a tornado, they would have had the perfect opportunity Friday.Valley's Aaron Martin and DeKalb's Tyler Bunch, tied for the final spot that advances to the state golf meet, tried to battle in a playoff through the storm. But with the sky growing increasingly darker and lightning flashing and wind gusting, Martin and Bunch were called off the course just minutes before a downpour began. Luckily, the storm didn't delay any of the other golf during the day.One of the most thankful teams for that may have been Wawasee. The Warriors shocked many of the golfers at the Homestead Regional, shooting a 334 and placing third at the meet. That score means Wawasee will advance to the state meet next week.

Squires Take TRC Title

MENTONE - Manchester won the boys Three Rivers Conference track title Friday, while Southwood took the girls title. Whitko was second in the boys meet, while Valley was sixth. In the girls meet, the Squires were second, Valley was fifth and Whitko sixth.

Let The Chips Fall: Osbeck Wins Big Match For Warsaw

The roars, accompanied by the clapping, exploded through the windows and door into the clubhouse. Bob Turner bolted out the door, leaving his warm room for the blustery winds that whipped across the Rozella Ford Golf Course. The Warsaw golf coach hadn't seen what had happened, but he quickly heard: sophomore Chris Osbeck, his No.5 golfer, just made a chip-in to birdie the last hole of the day. Yeah, it was a spectacular shot, but it turned out to be even more than that.It was a spectacular, match-winning shot. Osbeck's chip-in on the No.9 hole gave Warsaw a team score of 159, nine strokes better than NorthWood's 168.More importantly, it made Warsaw one stroke better than Concord's 160. This wasn't just any old garden-variety win for the Tigers. Concord, 13-2, was ranked No.12 in the state in a preseason poll. The win made Warsaw 4-0 and Concord 1-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference.NorthWood fell to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the NLC.

Strong Second Half Puts Tiger Boys At 19-2

HUNTERTOWN - It wasn't necessarily the start he was looking for, but Friday's finish certainly seemed to sit well with veteran Warsaw boys basketball coach Al Rhodes. Despite trailing by seven less than two minutes into Friday's game at Carroll, the No.7 (4A) Tigers came back with a strong second half and notched a 69-55 win in their regular season finale. The win puts Warsaw at 19-2 and on a five-game win streak heading into next week's much anticipated DeKalb Sectional.Carroll, which will also compete in the DeKalb Sectional, finishes its regular season at 11-9.

Warriors Crush TV

MENTONE -ÊRain clouds loomed over the Tippecanoe Valley High School softball field as the Wawasee bus pulled into the parking lot. When the Warriors started back home, they left with a 16-1 victory. Wawasee came out ready to play from the start as Dusty Krull jumpstarted the Warrior offensive attack with a single. After Megan King and Tara Hymer each walked with one out to load the bases, Candace Beer hit a fielder's choice to drive in Krull and King to give Wawasee a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning. "It is always good when you can string together some hits and score runs," said Wawasee head coach James O'Dell. Brooke Fisher started the game for Valley much like Krull did for Wawasee, with a single. She advanced to second base on a Tabitha Pratt sacrifice, and Vicki Steen reached first on a walk. The Vikings had runners on first and second with one out, but they were unable to capitalize and failed to score in the inning.

Wawasee Wins NLC Match, Championship

SYRACUSE -Ê"It's hard to beat home-cooking." Those were the thoughts of Warsaw golf coach Ben Barkey immediately after Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference championship. It was the second year in a row that the Wawasee Warriors won the event, this time at their home course in Syracuse, South Shore Golf Club. The Warriors shot a remarkable, two-over-par score of 290 to take the event by 12 shots over Concord's score of 302.Warsaw was a shot back at 303 with Plymouth at 305. Warsaw, Wawasee, and Concord all came into the event with identical conference records of 6-1, as Wawasee had beaten Concord, Concord had beaten Warsaw, and Warsaw had beaten Wawasee. The round robin standings coupled with the finish in conference championships would determine the final conference standings so everything was up in the air, but it was Wawasee that finished on top with Concord taking second overall and the Tigers third.

Warrior Track Win Streak Snapped At 36

GOSHEN - Maybe this time it will hold up. On April 3 Concord broke the Wawasee regular season unbeaten streak at 34 wins with a 63-60 win - or so it appeared. Earlier this week, Concord announced that it would forfeit eight points it won on the shot put because the throwers were inadvertently throwing shots 10 ounces lighter than regulation. So, with new life and a 36-meet unbeaten streak, the Wawasee Warriors went to Goshen to battle NorthWood and the host school on Wednesday.Just like the Concord meet, it came down to the final event, and just like the Concord meet, Wawasee took second place by the slimmest of margins. NorthWood ended with 58 points, Wawasee had 56 points, and Goshen finished with 42 points, as the Warriors lost for the first time in four years.

Warriors Overcome Sloppy Field, Play

SYRACUSE- It was definitely the season opener for both the Wawasee and Whitko football teams Friday night at Warrior Field at Wawasee High School. The Warriors overcame a sporadic offense, penalties galore and field conditions that worsened as the game drew on to secure a 33-7 win over the Wildcats from South Whitley. The night began by honoring senior football players, managers, cheerleaders and band members. For many of the football players, it was said their best memory was beating Warsaw 42-28 at Fisher Field on Warsaw's homecoming. While the Warriors will have to wait to try and repeat history they, got off to a passable start against Whitko.

Tigers Hold Off Hard-Charging Vikings

ROCHESTER - In the seminal film "Caddyshack", Ty Webb, played by Chevy Chase, tells caddy Danny Noonan to "be the ball." Tuesday night at Mill Creek Golf Course in Rochester both Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley golf teams were definitely being the ball. Warsaw needed two sub-40 rounds to hold off Valley and come away with a 171-176 win in the three-way match that included Wabash. The Apaches finished with a 229. While Warsaw's Emily Johnson shot a 37, the real story for the Tigers was the play of senior Mallory Hepler.Hepler, playing out of the third spot, shot a 39, which was good for the third best score of the night. Johnson was paired with Valley's Kara Kramer and Wabash's Heather Fox.Kramer pushed Johnson all afternoon and nearly had a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth. She would make the birdie putt from inside two feet.Kramer, who gave away a few shots during the match, still finished with a 38.

Tigers Open Akers Era With Win

COLUMBIA CITY - His focus on a balanced attack and remaining injury-free, Troy Akers' mission was accomplished Friday night in his first game as Warsaw's head football coach. Scoring in a variety of ways, including a a pair of long passes, a long run and a 47-yard field goal, the new-look Tigers opened the 2004 season with a 26-14 win at U.S.30 rival Columbia City. With Friday's win, the Tigers have opened the season with a victory over Columbia City in seven consecutive seasons. "It wasn't pretty all the time, but there were some times where we looked pretty good," said Akers, who worked under former coach Phil Jensen as defensive coordinator the past eight seasons. Though he now calls the offensive plays, Akers' impact on the defense was evident. Tabbed in the preseason as a strong defensive team, the Tigers were just that Friday at Max Gandy Athletic Field, as the Tigers held Columbia City's rushing attack to negative six yards on 21 attempts.

New Kids On The Block

By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer Sharissa Cullison admits she didn't know how to play rugby at first, but for the Warsaw Community High School senior and her teammates, there was a simple attraction to it - tackling. "I had no idea how to play it, " Cullison said Tuesday evening."I like the tackling.I always wanted to play football, this is the closest thing." Said junior Stephanie Hawley "I liked the fact that it was rough.I wanted an adrenaline rush. This is awesome." On a day when grass stains were more visible than lipstick, it was evident that rugby - a new club sport at WCHS this year - is catching on, as a number of parents and fans stood or sat in lawn chairs along the sidelines of the football practice field.

Da Bulls Are Becoming Da Boring

Is it just me or is anyone else tired of "da Bulls?" I mean really. I am not a huge NBA fan or anything, but this Bulls thing is starting to bug me. Anytime people start saying things like "dynasty," it turns me off.And lots of people around here are just absolutely rabid about da Bulls. They're not only talking dynasty, they're talking greatest of all time, greatest in history, greatest in the universe, blah, blah, blah. Well I'm basically sports illiterate, so I'm not going to argue that da Bulls aren't the greatest sports team since the dawn of time.Instead, I'm going to do what my 12-year-old does so well. I'm going to say, "So?" Or, the more emphatic, "So what?" Or the even more annoying, "Who cares?" I've had it with da Bulls and I'm not afraid to say it. I don't care if they win.I don't care if they lose. But if I was forced to name a preference, I'd prefer they lose.

Maxwelton Celebrates 75th Anniversary

SYRACUSE - Kosciusko County is known for the orthopedic industry as well as its many lakes. One undervalued gem might be the abundance of golf courses in the county. There are eight courses in the county, and for one, this year marks a big milestone. Carlson and his wife, Rena, bought Maxwelton in March of 1986.He has served as the course's pro since 1975. The early history of the course is a bit fuzzy, but it was commissioned to be built sometime in the mid 1920's.The actual construction of the course started in 1928 and was completed in 1930. The original owner is unknown but is believed to have been Scottish or from Scottish descent. The name of the course is derived from a Scottish folk song.
