Jason Jarrett Climbs In Point Standings With Runner-Up Finish

SALEM - A track that has left both cars and drivers battered over the years, historic Salem Speedway was just what the doctor ordered for Jason Jarrett and his Warsaw-based ML Motorsports team Sunday. Looking for a momentum swing after an engine failure led to a disapointing 36th-place finish at Nashville, Jarrett and the rest of the Gladiator GarageWorks-Bennigan's team found it Sunday in the form of a runner-up finish at the high-banked, half-mile oval in the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200. The runner-up finish, Jarrett's second straight at the famed southern Indiana track affectionately known as "the Bristol of the north", catapulted him from 24th to fifth in ARCA RE/MAX Series points after three races.

Tiger Golfers Start Season With Success

On a cold blustery afternoon, members of the Warsaw golf team warm up on the putting green while waiting to have their photos taken.Just business as usual. But this year's season, although less than half finished, is much different from usual. For starters, one of Warsaw's top players, Jake Brodhead, has yet to play in a single match. Before the season began, he broke a bone in his hand and has been unable to play so far. "Jake played No.1 for us last year," said Warsaw coach Ben Barkey."He is one of our top returners, so we are still missing a piece of the puzzle. He's ready to be back." "This season has been a good learning experience," said Tiger golfer Chris Hanson."We are learning to play without our No.1 golfer from last year." Especially after watching his brother Ben's performance at the Tiger Invitational.

Tiger Baseball Team Falls To Penn In Home Opener

Cut short because of darkness, Warsaw's home opener Monday was anything but short on action. A game that featured 10 extra-base hits, a thrilling rally by the home team and an ejection of the visting team's coach, Warsaw fell 12-10 to Penn in five innings. After giving up eight runs in the first inning and trailing 9-0 in the second, the host Tigers got singles from Kyle Conrad, Hans Griepentrog and Tyler Stouder to load the bases with one out. Senior short stop Sean Alderfer then stepped up to the plate and ripped a triple that cleared the bases and started a Tiger rally that produced five hits and four runs in the inning. After giving up just one hit in the third, the Tigers started the home half of the inning with back-to-back doubles from junior first baseman Jordan Williams and freshman third baseman Derek Freds.Conrad followed with a single and Alderfer later hit a double as the Tigers cut Penn's lead to one, 9-8.

Tiger Boys Golf Team Downs Washington

WINONA LAKE - Just the second home match at Stonehenge Golf Club for a young team with a rookie coach, Warsaw's varsity boys golf team continued to play like a crew of veterans Tuesday afternoon. Posting a 9-hole team score of 149, the Tigers downed visiting South Bend Washington by 10 strokes. "This is only our second home match, we're getting a lot better," first-year coach and former Warsaw golfer Ben Barkey said."The first time we shot a 162, we had some bad drives off the tee that caught us.Keeping the tee ball in play has been a big key for us.Our top three scores today were 36, 37, 37.We'll take that any day." Junior Ben Brodhead led the way for Warsaw, a team with just one senior and two juniors on a 12-man roster, with a 1-over score of 36.Sophomores Jake Brodhead and Chris Hanson both shot 37, while lone senior Jeremy Nieter shot 39 and freshman Skyler Scott 42.

Ford Finishes All 18

SOUTH BEND -ÊThe clock hit 10:10 Monday morning, but Warsaw golf pro Ford Olinger did not tee off in the U.S.Open qualifier at the South Bend Country Club. That's because the event was running behind, not because he chose not to compete. When 10:25 a.m.arrived, Olinger -Êwithout a cart - teed off.And at 3:40 p.m.- some five hours and four miles later - he limped off the course after finishing the 18th hole. The 32-year-old Olinger has the degenerative hip condition bilateral avascular necrosis. His hips are dead.In a lawsuit decided last week, Judge Robert Miller ruled the golf pro could not use a golf cart to qualify for the U.S.Open and had to walk like everyone else.

Wawasee Warrior Girls Win Three-Way NLC Track Meet

Led by individual first-place finshes from Rachel Stichter, Jessie Spearman, Brooke Mark and Gloria Boesenberg, the host Warriors scored 65 points to top rival Warsaw (52) and NorthWood (39). The wins improved Wawasee to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the NLC.With the win over NorthWood and the loss to the Warriors, Warsaw is now 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the NLC. "This was a great NLC meet," said Warsaw coach Scott Erba."Wawasee has some outstanding athletes and NorthWood has some great throwers. This was a real fun NLC meet, a chance to see the NLC at its best." A meet already filled with strong performances, the evening finished on a high note with an exciting finish to the 1600 relay, which was won by the Warsaw foursome of Katie Furnivall, Katie Logan, Ashley Kitchens and Julie Seiss in a time of 4:14.5.

Four Triton Track And Field Athletes Make State

KOKOMO - If you want to study a track athlete with good running form, don't watch Triton sophomore sprinter Matt Anders or Triton junior distance runner Nathan Gephart. Triton coach Curt Kreft will be the first to tell you that. "Nate's so springy when he runs," Kreft said, "and that detracts from his speed. But that's just the way he is.Matt doesn't look like a 400 runner. He has no knee lift. "We have some unorthodox runners." Like the NFL prospect who may not be a workout warrior but stars once the game kicks off, all Anders and Gephart do is get big-time results. Triton followed last week's sectional team title by placing in the top three in five events at Thursday's Kokomo Regional. The top three in each event advance to next week's state finals.South Bend Clay won the team title with 78 points; Triton finished fifth with 39.5 points.

Solid Bats Make Up For Shaky Gloves In Tiger Win

Warsaw head baseball coach Will Shepherd has no delusions about what his team is. "Offensively, I don't worry about this team," said Shepherd."Defensively, we've struggled." The Tigers' offense cranked out two home runs and pitcher Kyler Mylin was steady to make up for four errors in a 5-4 comeback win over Northern Lakes Conference combatant Concord Friday afternoon at Tiger Field. Concord gained its first lead of the game in the sixth inning after Brandon Tepe reached on a throwing error by Mark Sudhoff.Jeremy Howard then reached on a successful sacrifice bunt. After Tepe scored on an error, Howard was brought home when Craig Downs perfectly executed a suicide squeeze bunt. Unfazed, the Tigers came right back and answered. Tyler Stouder led off the bottom of the sixth inning, his team down 4-2, with a majestic 360-foot home run to right-center field.

Warsaw Baseball Team Stays Perfect In NLC

Warsaw baseball coach Will Shepherd was worried about how his team would bounce back. After working on the field for nearly an hour Wednesday, the Tigers learned that their Northern Lakes Conference game against NorthWood was postponed. "I was concerned," said Shepherd."We pushed the game back, and then there weren't beautiful blue skies. It would have been easy to have a let-down out there tonight, but the Tigers came out to play baseball." So the Warsaw squad hit the field with enthusiasm and picked up a 15-0 win over the visiting Panthers in a five-inning game. After neither team scored in the first inning, the Warsaw bats came to life in the bottom of the second frame. Zack Smith walked and then moved to second base on a single hit by Berto Nunez. After Josh Stork walked to load the bases, Jeremy Sharp pounded a single to right field that scored Smith.

Area Baseball Teams Looking To Rebuild

Rebuilding is the theme for most of the area high school baseball teams. Many of the most talented baseball players this area has seen have now moved on to play in the college or professional ranks. The Warsaw Tigers enter the 2005 baseball season with some big holes to fill.Gone are Brandon LaFollette, Sean Alderfer and Mark Sherman.LaFollette is currently playing baseball at Purdue, while Alderfer and Sherman are at Indiana Tech and Ancilla College, respectively. Both LaFollette and Alderfer were first team all-state selections in 2004.LaFollette, an outfielder for the Tigers, holds the single-season batting average record (.506) and is tied for the single-season home run record with Sherman. Both hit nine homers last year. Despite such a loss of talent, Warsaw head coach Will Shepherd remains optimistic. "We're looking forward to seeing who will step up and lead us," said Shepherd.

Warsaw Beats The Heat To Win Regional

"This is one of the most hotly contested regionals I can remember," said one representative of Homestead High School who was distributing awards after the match."The team play was fantastic." On a course where a 320 is considered a good team score, Warsaw shot a 304 to beat No.4 Concordia by a whopping 10 strokes.Garrett, the third-place team, scored a 315. After the first nine holes, Warsaw and Garrett were tied for the lead at 155 while Wawasee and Dwenger followed close behind with scores of 160.NorthWood stood at 176 after nine holes. But after the final scores were in, the Tigers came out on top of the rest of the field with a 304.Wawasee dropped to a 338 after having some trouble on the back nine.NorthWood finished the day with a 352.

No. 5 Homestead Hands No. 8 Warsaw First Loss

Plain and simple, someone had to lose. In a battle of state-ranked and undefeated girls tennis teams, No.5 Homestead downed No.8 Warsaw 4-1 Monday afternoon in a lengthy match that was closer than the team score indicated. On an afternoon when forecasted rains never came, those who predicted a long, competitive match between the Spartans and the host Tigers were right on. "This was a great match, but we made too many errors," Warsaw coach Rick Orban said."Honestly, I think our girls were a little nervous. We started slow, we don't normally do that." The Tigers trailed early in the first set of all three matches, including the No.1 singles slot where Warsaw junior Jessica Davis fell behind 4-1 before making it 4-3.She trailed junior Laura Phillip 3-0 in the second set but fought back to a 5-4 deficit, eventually falling 7-5, 6-4 in straight sets.

'Ridge Runs Past Wawasee, Warsaw

SYRACUSE - After sitting closer to the bottom of the Northern Lakes Conference than the top, making the move back up takes time.It can't be done in one big leap. Warsaw's path in girls track has been filled with some frustration and success, but it has been a slow trek. But the gap does seem to be closing. Northridge won the Northern Lakes Conference triangular meet with 72 points.Wawasee had 48 and Warsaw 36 Thursday. "We have a very young team, but we are closing the gap surely and steadily," Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said."We are looking forward to the (NLC) conference meet Tuesday." Wawasee has been the class of the conference for a few years and with that, a thorn in Warsaw's side.Although this year's Warrior squad may not be as outstanding as in years past, it marks improvement for the Tigers to come as close as they did.

Plymouth Puts Warsaw In Its Usual Place

PLYMOUTH - The upbeat song "Sweet Home, Chicago," pumped through the loudspeakers, but the baseball coach lecturing his players in right field after a 5-2 loss was in a sour mood. Losing to Plymouth does that to Warsaw baseball coach Will Shepherd.Losing to Plymouth twice in a season, as the Tigers did this year, doubles the frustration. Then there is the matter of the Northern Lakes Conference title. Plymouth hosted and beat Warsaw 5-2 Monday.Plymouth improved to 14-3 overall and 7-0 in the NLC, while Warsaw fell to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the NLC.Both of Warsaw's NLC losses have come to Plymouth, now in control of the conference. Plymouth seeks its third straight NLC title and fourth in five years.Warsaw has finished second in the NLC the last three years.Last year Plymouth was 12-0 in the NLC, while Warsaw was 9-3.

Warsaw Wins Track Showdown

NAPPANEE - Who could have thought a matchup between three Northern Lakes Conference boys track unbeatens would be such a mismatch? Troy Akers, for one. The Warsaw boys track coach knew his Tigers had the talent, it was just a matter of being in the right mental frame of mind for its big matchup with NorthWood and Concord. And they were certainly there as the Tigers racked up 86 1/2 points.Concord had 53, and NorthWood scored 27 1/2. "Yeah, I anticipated it," Akers said of Warsaw's dominating performance."We were ready to break loose.I knew Concord and NorthWood had strong teams, but I thought we had a little more depth." That is exactly where Warsaw got it done, with its depth. Warsaw got the big performances out of the usual standouts - Jon Hill and David Hoffert - but coming up big were the likes of Greg Seiss, Shaun Mudd, Scott Shepherd, Marvin Farmer and Steve Fribley.

By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer

AKRON - Even with it being the first match of the season, Tippecanoe Valley girls tennis coach Jack Shambaugh said he couldn't complain about the way his varsity team played Wednesday. Then again, if his team plays like that on a regular basis, Shambaugh will have very little to complain about all season. The Vikings hosted Three Rivers Conference rival Manchester, topping the Squires 5-0 as only one varsity match went to a third set. Valley took the JV contest as well, downing Manchester 4-1. "I won't argue with the way we played," said Shambaugh."We beat a good team.Manchester is gonna win their share of matches. We're off to a good start, and it was a TRC match so we wanted to get off on the right foot there, too." After falling 4-1 to Carroll on Tuesday, the Squires fell to 0-2 with Wednesday's loss.

Warsaw Boys Track Whips Wawasee

SYRACUSE - Wawasee head coach Kerry Murphy probably understood best the difference between his Warriors boys track team and the Warsaw track team Tuesday. "They just have too much speed on the track for us," he said."It's tough to compete when you don't have that speed." That speed differential was evident in the short events, the long events, the hurdles and just about everything in between as the Tigers won 14 of 16 events in winning a Northern Lakes Conference meet 103-28. For Warsaw head coach Troy Akers, it was his first trip to Wawasee since he left the girls program to coach the boys team at Warsaw last year. "This was a good, fun meet," Akers said."It was fun to come back here.I don't like to hear about Warsaw against Wawasee. This is a very friendly rivalry." Even in the field events, where some may consider Warsaw to be weak, the Tigers won all four events. That's not to say that Wawasee didn't have its bright spots.

Tiger Offense Continues To Pound Opponents

While many students spent spring break basking in the sun, the Warsaw baseball team took advantage of the mild Indiana weather and hit the field for some early season action. The Tigers played their fourth game of the week against Wabash and added another mark in the win column with a 15-4 five-inning victory. Wabash struck first in the battle of the black and orange, and the Apaches scored three runs on a Brandon Nordman home run and took that 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first. However, the Tigers were prepared to attack offensively as well. After Jason Barrett reached first base on an error, Steve Siebenmorgen helped the cause with a single to put Warsaw runners on second and third.Don Kennedy stepped to the plate next and hit a double that brought both Barrett and Siebenmorgen across the plate to reduce the Wabash lead to one. Then John Leininger laced a double to bring Kennedy home and tie the score at three.

Mentone Talks About Unkempt Property, Annexation Possibilities

MENTONE - In the new year, the Mentone Town Council wants to crack down on deteriorating properties. "I think we have landlords turning into slumlords and we need to put a stop to that," Tim Croy, town councilman, said at the council's regular meeting Monday. Clerk-Treasurer Barbara Ross agreed."It's a good project for the start of the first of the year."She also pointed out that "Surface guy is still not doing anything with that dentist office." "We have houses and businesses in desperate need of repairs," said Croy. With so many new houses coming into town, Croy said they need to try to fix the town up. As part of the town's growth, Croy also asked town attorney Larry Beeson about how to annex property into the town. Two large property owners north of Tucker and Franklin streets want their properties annexed into the town.Beeson said he'd have to look into the annexation procedure.
