Tippy Valley Vaults Past Rochester

MENTONE - It doesn't get much closer than Valley and Rochester this year.Of the four games that the junior varsity and varsity teams have played against each other, the most lopsided score was the Zebras 45-42 win in the junior varsity game on Friday night. In that game, Valley had two chances to tie the game with three-pointers, but came up short. The varsity game was even closer as Maurice Looman scored on a layup with one second to play to give Valley a 67-66 win at home. The win pushes the Vikings above .500 in the Three Rivers Conference at 3-2 on the year.

Plymouth Takes Panthers

PLYMOUTH- Friday night's matchup between Plymouth and Northwood was a game of spurts, with each team battling for the final spurt that would decide the game. Plymouth was able to get that final spurt and come away with a 50-36 victory. Northwood coach Dan Gunn wanted to shut down Mr.Basketball-candidate Brian Wray and make the rest of the Plymouth team score. The Panthers were able to shut down Wray early, but they couldn't stop Plymouth guard Brian Davis.Davis hit 3 of 3 shots from behind the arc in the first quarter. He helped Plymouth jump out to an 18-9 first quarter.Wray came slowly out of the gate.He was 2-for-5 shooting in the first and finished the quarter with just five points.

Tigers End Losing Skid

DUNLAP - Make no mistake about it, this is an important weekend for Warsaw's boys basketball team. Warsaw coach Al Rhodes made that known earlier this week when he challenged his players to "decide which way we are going to head."This statement came after Warsaw lost back-to-back games for the first time since 1995, 76-74 to Gary Wallace and 60-57 to NorthWood. The way, his players decided Friday, was up. The Tigers beat Concord 67-60.Warsaw improved to 8-4 and 3-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference, while Concord dipped to 4-7 and 0-4 in the NLC. Yep, this win was important.

Triton Tops Caston Again

BOURBON - After the Triton Trojans won their 10th in a row at home, after they upped their record to 9-2, after they beat Caston 64-57 Friday, head coach Kevin O'Rourke was asked the question. Do you think people respect your basketball team yet? "I would think teams are looking and wondering," O'Rourke said."If I were playing us, I would respect us.But I respect our opponents, too." Like Caston. Triton beat Caston 75-59 in a tournament in December, but Caston entered last night's game with a 7-3 record. The Comets and sharpshooter Luke Zartman showed right away they aimed to keep this one close. Zartman made 3 of 5 three-pointers and scored 15 after two quarters, helping Caston earn a 31-30 halftime lead. O'Rourke gave his team a message at halftime: the offense was stagnant, the defense not up to par. The players heard the message. The Trojans moved in their motion offense and defended with more aggressiveness the second half.

Surprised By What's Considered Important

This community truly has a lot for which to be thankful. The economy here is fairly recession-proof because of all the orthopedic manufacturing and other diverse industry. There are good schools, a low crime rate, lots of churches. It's really a great place to live and raise a family. All in all, living here is a very positive experience. But one thing that has always surprised me about this community is what it takes to whip up a controversy. I am forever wrong when it comes to predicting what will prompt readers of this newspaper to write a letter to the editor. Sometimes I spend a lot of time researching a topic for this column. When I am finished, I sit back and think to myself in some self-important fashion, "That's really gonna reach people." It never does. On the other hand, sometimes I just sit down and write something off the top of my head. Those are the columns that seem to light a fire under readers.

Tigers Find Enough Offense To Edge Concord

DUNLAP - A piece of paper with statistics on it didn't give Warsaw's boys basketball team a win over Northern Lakes Conference rival Concord Friday, but it did tell Tiger mentor Al Rhodes just how, in this case how bad, his team was playing after two quarters. Rhodes said he gets stats on a piece of paper at halftime that tells him how many points per possession his team is averaging.Last night Warsaw trailed 19-15 at halftime.Rhodes said he didn't remember if this was the lowest halftime score he's seen, but Warsaw's .43 points per posession was a low. "In my opinion, with the absence of Steve (Siebenmorgen), everyone tried too hard," said Rhodes. Siebenmorgen, who suffered his second concussion this season, watched the game from the bench for the second consecutive game.Rhodes said he will be evaluated on Tuesday.

Aaron Hood scored the first 14 points for Lakeland Christian Academy's basketball team as the senior guard had another outstanding performance in LCA's 61-47 Monday win over Ft.Wayne Christian.Hood scored 33 points on the night and had five rebounds and five assists.Tim Buckholtz added 19 points. Lakeland used a strong first quarter perfomance to put the game out of reach. The Cougars held a 21-5 lead after one quarter and never looked back. The win moves the Cougar record to 5-7.Lakeland will next face Community Baptist at home on Tuesday night with the junior varsity game starting at 6:30 p.m.

Panthers Avenge Loss Against Tigers

After the Warsaw boys basketball team beat NorthWood 50-46 in overtime in the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament, fans from both squads were expecting a catfight in Warsaw Friday night. However, what the fans saw was far from a catfight as the Panthers made history by downing the Tigers 54-47.It was the first time NorthWood (7-4, 3-2 NLC) has defeated Warsaw (9-5, 3-2 NLC) in the Tiger Den. The Panthers led from the first basket of the game and never looked back against a Warsaw team struggling with NorthWood's 2-3 zone as well as illness. Rory Clouse opened the game for the Panthers with a three-point basket, then Ryan Bradley hit two free throws to put the Panthers up 5-0 with 6:16 left in the first frame. NorthWood continued to attack the Tigers, and by the end of the first stanza, the Panthers held a 13-6 advantage. NorthWood then outscored the Tigers 15-14 in the second frame to take a 28-20 lead into the halftime break.

Tigers To Play 2,000th Game

As the old saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day. While most area basketball fans know of the success Al Rhodes had during the 1980s and '90s and up through 2002, the Warsaw Tiger boys basketball program has come a long way since C.J.Roberts coached the school's first game in 1919. It is arguably one of the most successful and respected programs in the state, and Saturday at Marion, also one of the most respected high school boys basketball institutions in Hoosierland, the Tigers will play their 2,000th career game. Since their first game in 1919, a 42-15 loss to Elkhart, the Tigers have provided the community with a number of basketball memories - memories that many fans still recall today.

Squires Fall Below .500

NORTH MANCHESTER - Even a coaching change couldn't shake Manchester's boys basketball team out of its woes. Manchester, which began the season 3-0, lost its fourth straight and fell to 6-7 with a 65-51 Tuesday loss to Carroll (6-6). Junior varsity coach Steve Rice coached the varsity Squires as head coach Gary Goshert was expelled for one game after being ejected in Friday's 90-80 loss to Peru. After an ejection, the IHSAA requires that coach to miss the next game. It is the first time this season the Squires have fallen under .500. "It's frustrating," Rice said."We have to stay together as a team and get going in the right direction.I know coach Goshert will work his butt off to get things straightened out." The loss dropped Rice, who's been Manchester's junior varsity head coach for years, to 1-1 as a varsity head coach.

Tigers Take Second In NLC Tournament

Warsaw and Wawasee came in second and third behind first-place Goshen in Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference Wrestling Tournament hosted by Northridge.Ê Goshen's win gives the Redskins sole possession of the season conference championship.Ê Goshen took first place with only four individual champions, while Wawasee had five champions: Josh DeGood (112 pounds), Chet Wortinger (119), J.J.Davis (152), Kevin A.Carr (160) and Jamie Salazar (275). Warsaw had eight wrestlers in the finals, but the lone champion for the Tigers was sophomore Kris Hueber (171).Matt Zellers (152), a runnerup, was one three wrestlers named asÊ "at large" in the All-Conference selections.

Balanced Warsaw Offense Proves Too Much For Concord

All of the these things, missing a week ago in a 61-49 loss at Goshen, helped Warsaw rip Concord 67-47 on Friday.Warsaw's boys basketball team improves to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference, while Concord drops to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in the NLC. Warsaw starter Jerad Shaw scored 13 to lead Warsaw, and reserves Brian Johnson and Chris Clay added 11 each.Reserve Trent Martin scored nine, as did Tiger starter Josh Buck. So balanced was Warsaw's scoring on this night that the bench outscored the starters 36-31. Concord played without its leader and best player, 6-foot-10 junior John Morningstar.Morningstar, who averages 15 points and 11 rebounds per game, watched the game on the bench dressed in street clothes. He has missed two games with a grade-two shoulder separation.Concord lost both games, 86-46 to Elkhart Central and now the 20-point loss to Warsaw.

Manchester Scoring Runs Dry In Loss To Warsaw

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊWhen tonight's game with Wawasee is over, Warsaw's girls basketball team will have faced three of the top scorers in the state in the last 24 hours. Tonight the Tigers travel to Wawasee to face Shanna Zolman and the Warriors.Zolman, a freshman, leads the state in scoring with 31.8 points per game. Tuesday night they played at Manchester, where they faced Megan Eckert, Jessica Hicks and the rest of the Squires. Eckert, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, entered the game ninth in the state at 24.8 points per game.Hicks, a 5-10 sophomore, was averaging 20.1 points per game. They combined for only 19 on 7-of-22 shooting as the Tigers pulled away late to win 53-34.Eckert hit 4 of 13 for nine points, while Hicks hit 3 of 9 for six points. "I'm not knocking Manchester, but we knew two players were obviously much of their offense," Warsaw coach Will Wienhorst said.

Manchester Girls Beat Valley, Grab TRC Title

AKRON - An inadvertent whistle gave the Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball new life with 4.7 seconds left in its Saturday night tilt against Manchester. Viking Kara Kramer raced down the floor and nailed a three-pointer to draw Valley to within two points at 48-46 before the whistle. Manchester's Christa Peden quickly extinguished any glimmer of hope by draining two free throws to give the Squires a 50-46 win and the Three Rivers Conference championship. Both Manchester and Valley entered Saturday night's game with unblemished 6-0 conference records. Ironically, Friday night's boys contest between the two schools was determined by a pair of late free throws and much like the boys contest, the girls were involved in an old-fashioned barn burner. The Squires clung to a one-point lead before Peden connected on a three-point play with 2:29 left in the game after being fouled by Valley's Heather Rathbun to extend Manchester's lead to 41-37.

No. 10 Goshen Slams Warsaw

It was a physical and frustrating time for the Warsaw wrestling team Tuesday against No.10 Goshen. The Tigers entered the match with the Redskins hoping to move up in the Northern Lakes Conference. What they got was banged up, as well as their second NLC loss, 39-27, of the year. The night started with 103-pounder Scott Snyder suffering a loss as well as a possible broken hand.It did get better for Warsaw, and the Tigers took a 17-7 lead when Goshen's Colby Barkes got disqualified on an injury default for an illegal hold on Warsaw's Greg Patrick. It caused another problem for Warsaw as Patrick suffered an injured elbow and his future status is not known. The Redskins disagreed with the call by the official.Oh, how they disagreed.Goshen did, however, get the momentum as the Redskins captured the next three weight classes, including two impressive pins at 140 and 145 by Andrew Yoder and Mark Oswald respectively.

Warsaw Grad Coaching At Taylor High School

KOKOMO - Josh Ousley, 30, a 1993 Warsaw Community High school graduate, was named head coach of the Taylor High School football team Wednesday night by the Taylor school board. Ousley was a standout football and baseball player at WCHS before heading to Anderson University, where he played football and gained his degree in elementary education in 1997.He then spent four years as an assistant coach at Triton High School before moving to Taylor, where he coached linebackers and wide receivers. Ousley, a special needs teacher at Taylor High School, which is located in Kokomo, said his goal was to be a head coach by the age of 30. "Being a varsity coach has been a dream of mine since high school," Ousley told the Kokomo Tribune."A long time ago I laid out a plan for my life and I wanted to be a head coach by age 30.I'm extremely excited and thrilled with the opportunity". Ousley is the son of Mitch and Merla Ousley, Warsaw.

Partisanship Returns To Washington

In the first weeks following the terror attack of 9/11, there seemed to be a spiritual reawakening across the nation. People seemed move civil.Churches were full.People seemed more giving and concerned for their fellow man. Even in Washington there was this sense of bipartisan that was unheard of in recent years. The honeymoon is over. And the messenger of partisanship is Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. Daschle is essentially blocking W's domestic agenda at every turn.Simultaneously, he's waving the flag behind W's handling of the war against terrorism. Of course Daschle knows full well the pitfalls of going against W on the terror issue. With W's approval rating in the high 80s of percentage points, no self-respecting Democrat would risk taking him to task. And according to a recent Wall Street Journal piece, Daschle is currently involved in some really serious obstructionism.

John Kerry Has Got To Be Kidding

For all those who are disappointed in W - count me as one of those - you can at least make yourself feel better secure in the knowledge that John Kerry would have been much worse. The guy seems to have completely lost control of his mental faculties.Although, that assumes he had control of them to begin with and I don't think I would take that bet. This week in the U.S.Senate, he came up with an amendment that would have required virtually all of the 127,000 U.S.troops in Iraq to be withdrawn by July 1 of next year. Now, I'm not going to debate the merits of the amendment.(The Senate defeated it 86-13, by the way.) You may or may not think that's a good idea and I certainly think there is a principled argument on both sides of the issue of withdrawing troops form Iraq. What I don't get is how John Kerry has become the Democratic point man for troop withdrawal. He got himself on the radio with Don Imus.

Warsaw Grapplers Seize Sectional Crown

PLYMOUTH - Warsaw's wrestlers nabbed the sectional championship with a great team effort, which included 19 Tiger pins, a tech fall and eight decisions, three of which were major. As a team, Warsaw scored 208.5 points, followed by Rochester with 196.5, Plymouth 190.5, Bremen 172.5, Culver Military 164.5, Wawasee 135.5, Culver Community 131, Triton 76 and Tippecanoe Valley 55.5.
