Valley Cruises In Carr's Return

AKRON - The last time Ryleigh Carr suited up for Tony Stesiak's Rochester Zebras girls basketball team, it resulted in a 45-23 win over Culver on November 30.Since that point, Carr has been sidelined with a case of mononucleosis that landed the 5-foot-7 junior in the hospital. Carr, now fully recovered, made her return against backyard rival Valley Saturday night and saw three Vikings score in double digits as Valley won handily, 55-37. Beer Reflects On 12 Years Of Governing

As usual, Maurie Beer came to the commissioner's meeting last Monday dressed impeccably. The elder Kosciusko County leader wore a pin-striped shirt with a floral tie tucked underneath a green suit jacket that appeared tailor made. The color green carried an ironic coincidence last Monday as Beer attended his last meeting as a Kosciusko County commissioner. After an estimated 300 meetings, Beer's perspective of county government has matured since his first session 12 years ago. "Back then, I was pretty green," Beer said during a break in the commissioner's meeting, adding that he knew little about zoning issues when the topic came up at his first meeting. But Beer caught on, and became known for sticking up for the common man. That was best illustrated this year when a Milford company announced plans for a major expansion of its plant and coincided it with requests to widen nearby roads.

Warsaw Boys Top Goshen, Stay Perfect In NLC Play

Friday night's Northern Lakes Conference game between the Warsaw Tigers and the Goshen Redskins was not the prettiest game of the season, but Warsaw coach Doug Ogle was pleased with the outcome. "Although we won the game," said Ogle after his team's 45-35 win over Goshen, "I thought we could have played better." Goshen's Andrew Bartley opened the game with a basket at the 6:21 mark to put the Redskins up 2-0. However, the Goshen lead didn't last long as Warsaw senior Mark Sherman hit back-to-back baskets to give the Tigers a 4-2 advantage. A bucket by Goshen's Scan Farver tied the score at 4-all, but then Sherman struck again to put Warsaw up 6-4. Redskin sophomore Andy Overpeck scored a basket at the 2:29 mark to knot the score at 6, and that's where the team remained until the second stanza. Farver and Jeremy Woodford scored the first four points of the second frame to give Goshen a 10-6 lead with 6:06 left in the first half.

OK, OK, So I'll Wear My Seat Belt

Perhaps you saw my name in the Court News section of the newspaper recently. You see, I got pinched for a seat belt violation. I was rolling down Center Street, just having left Ace Hardware and headed for the Times-Union. I saw an officer - who will remain nameless - pull up to Center from a side street.I smiled and waved as I drove by.(I always smile and wave at cops.I don't know why.It just seems like the right thing to do.They're public servants. It's a bit of a thankless task, being a cop.) Anyway, imagine my surprise when the officer pulls out, falls in behind me and flips on the blinky lights. I immediately came to the conclusion that he probably wasn't pulling me over to wave back. I wasn't sure right away why I was being pulled over, but as he was walking up to my car it dawned on me - I wasn't wearing my seat belt.

Welcome to the new economy.

Sometimes we get tugged away from the free market by government regulation, but all in all, our economic system pretty much rules the world. But I've been noticing some unsettling trends in business practices. First there were all the Enron, Tyco, Global Crossings, WorldCom fiascos. You know, all the under-reporting of debt and over-reporting of income to artificially inflate stock prices. Lots of stockholders lost lots of money in those companies. Of course this was followed closely by the Arthur Andersen accounting foibles, where that firm apparently went along with a lot of the under-reporting and over-reporting. That's really too bad. It tends to give capitalism a bad name.It makes CEOs look awful greedy. And I would like to point out at this juncture that the vast majority of CEOs out there are not greedy money grubbers.

Squires Fall 62-53

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊAfter practicing with as few as 10 players on the JV and varsity squads due to illness last week, the Manchester Squires had to face a conference opponent Friday and a tough Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger squad Saturday. The Squires were hoping to bounce back against Dwenger after falling to North Miami, but that was not in the cards.Manchester (6-5) fell 62-53 to the Saints. Manchester jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but Dwenger fought back to tie the score at 6-6.A steal by Jon Filler led to a basket by Mike Hopen and an 8-6 Dwenger lead. However, the Squires were not ready to give in.Chris Lochner netted a basket to tie the score at 8-8, and then Anthony Frieden sank two charity shots and then netted a basket to build a 12-8 lead. But then Dwenger started to make a run.The Saints outscored the Squires 9-2 in the final 2:30 of the first quarter to take a 17-14 lead into the second frame.

0-10 Southwood Wins First Against Valley

AKRON - After falling on the floor in the third quarter of play against Tippecanoe Valley Thursday, Southwood' Brooke McKee asked for a towel to dry the floor. "She does everything," said Southwood coach Rod Cole with a grin."She shoots, she rebounds, and she even wipes up the floor." McKee did everything right when she scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds Thursday and led the Knights girls basketball team to its first win of the season 40-39 over Valley. In the first quarter, baskets were few and far between as both teams combined for more turnovers than points.Lynette Wilcox led the Vikings, scoring six of their eight points in the period. At the end of the first stanza, Valley held an 8-5 lead, and the Vikings and Knights had combined for 17 turnovers in the quarter.
