10 Years Ago February 18 1996 A surprise celebration was held at Mentone School in honor of custodian Chet Traver's 80th birthday.Principal Jon Parker presented Traver with a John Deere cap.Traver retired from Indiana Cities Water Co.in Jeffersonville in 1979.Before he had time to get settled in his retirement, he was contacted by the school and asked to accept a position as bus mechanic.He accepted the post Feb.24, 1980, but said he would only work six months.On Oct.26, 1990, he retired again.But he didn't stay away.He started working at Mentone School as a part-time custodian 17 days later and on Nov.30, 1995, took a position as a full-time custodian.

10 Years Ago June 13 1996 WINONA LAKE - Longtime resident R.Quentin Rupe was honored as the recipient of the annual Bill Reneker Memorial Community Service Award. Presented by Judy Reneker, the award is given to an individual who makes a selfless contribution to the betterment of Winona Lake.Rupe, she said, "has given our town countless hours of community service." 25 Years Ago June 13 1981 Polly Hicks, who won first place in the recent Women's Christian Temperance Poster Contest out of 450 posters entered from eight schools in Kosciusko County, also was awarded prize money for winning third place in the state contest. Her art teacher from Jefferson School is Nancy Shoemaker.

10 Years Ago April 7 1991 Outstanding contributors to the Indiana livestock industry were honored recently at the Indiana Livestock Breeders Association annual banquet at Purdue University. Twelve youths were recognized for their achievements in 4-H and FFA.Among the 4-H winners was Jill Sommers, Silver Lake, for her beef project. 25 Years Ago April 7 1976 A happy Jenny Cox displayed her plaque as the mental attitude award winner in the IHSAA gymnastics state finals.Jenny, a senior at Wawasee, placed eighth in the all-around at Saturday's championships.Her best individual finish was in the floor exercise, where she took a fourth.She placed eighth in optional vaulting, 12th in the uneven parallel bars and 19th in the balance beam.

10 Years Ago March 3 1996 MENTONE - Tippecanoe Valley quarterback/defensive back Quentin Law is one of only five players from Indiana to be awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Indiana Football Hall Of Fame. The Hall awards the scholarship to one player in each of the five classes in Indiana.The scholarship is based on scholastic as well as athletic accomplishments.

10 Years Ago Nov.15 1987 Winona Lake's newest police officer, Tom Adams, 28, of Claypool, was hired Oct.29 and officially began solo patrolling this week in the town. He is a 1977 Warsaw Community High School graduate and had previously been employed with the Houston city police in Texas for one year before moving back to Indiana. 25 Years Ago Nov.15 1972 Jim Weirick, Warsaw, downed his first ever buck with a bow and arrow late Thursday night while hunting west of Warsaw.The 10-point buck weighed in at more than 200 pounds.

10 Years Ago Nov.20 1987 Paul Draper was honored at the Winona Lake Town Board meeting Tuesday for 12 years of service to the park department.Draper announced his retirement this fall. 25 Years Ago Nov.20 1972 Phil Jones of Wawasee Prep recently served as an evaluator at the southeastern states' National Science Teachers Association's convention held in New Orleans.Jones has 10 years' teaching experience, with the last three years at Prep teaching Earth Sciences, Architectural Drafting and Drivers Education, along with being varsity football coach of the Lakers.

10 Years Ago March 2 1996 Army Pvt.Chad Shaffner, son of Steven and Carolyn Shaffner, Warsaw, has graduated from the basic field artillery cannoneer course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. During the course, students were taught the duties of a Howitzer or gun section crewman.They also received instruction in communications, maintenance and handling ammunition and explosives. 25 Years Ago March 2 1981 Warsaw Elks Lodge No 802 has named Paul Michael Miller as "Teenager of the Month." Miller, 18, and a senor at Warsaw High School, is the son of Mr.and Mrs.Gerald Miller, 206 E.Center St.

10 Years Ago April 11 1991 James Harrison picked up another ace Thursday morning on the second hole of Stonehenge's Executive Course. It was Harrison's third hole-in-one at the course.The other two came one week apart in June of 1987. Harrison used a six-iron on the 115-yard hole. 25 Years Ago April 11 1976 Robert Orcutt was appointed director of the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission following a 50-minute executive session at the regular meeting Wednesday night.Orcutt begins his duties immediately. Orcutt has served the commission as ordinance administrator since 1974, when he began work with James Baker on the implementation of the area plan.Baker resigned recently as director of the plan commission.

10 Years Ago April 13 1991 More than 30 teens and coaches attended the Teen Bible Quiz at the Winona Lake Free Methodist Church.It was the largest Bible Quiz event in the denomination on a regional basis.Seventy-three teams participated in quizzing. The Winona Lake church took a first-place trophy in the Senior Teen rookie category.Winning team members were Jason Cannon, Cory Kwilinski, Wesley Cannon and Brandy Waldridge. Dick Aust of Warsaw is the local church's quiz coach.

10 Years Ago Dec.3 1987 Chad Tucker, Mentone, was recently recognized by DeKalb-Pfizer Genetics for his ability to estimate crop yields.Tucker was the winner in the company's "Eye For Yield" contest held in conjunction with a field day at Lloyd Tillman farm, Mentone. 25 Years Ago Dec.3 1972 Harley O.Rice, Warsaw, construction electric crew supervisor with Northern Indiana Public Service Company, has announced his retirement from the utility.Rice, a graduate of Rochester High School, started with NIPSCO in 1949 as a mechanic "B."Other promotions include mechanic "A" and later mechanic foreman in 1950 and construction crew supervisor in 1951.

Valley Cruises In Carr's Return

AKRON - The last time Ryleigh Carr suited up for Tony Stesiak's Rochester Zebras girls basketball team, it resulted in a 45-23 win over Culver on November 30.Since that point, Carr has been sidelined with a case of mononucleosis that landed the 5-foot-7 junior in the hospital. Carr, now fully recovered, made her return against backyard rival Valley Saturday night and saw three Vikings score in double digits as Valley won handily, 55-37. The Vikings' Kara Kramer overcame foul trouble to lead Valley with 17 points. Kramer scored nine points in a first quarter that saw the Vikings jump out to a 22-9 lead.Valley was balanced in the scoring department all evening, never so much as the opening quarter, with five different players putting points on the board for head coach Gary Teel. Teel and Co.experienced not only a balanced attack but also one that was consistent. "Tonight we shot the ball a lot better than we did against NorthWood," said Teel.
