10 Years Ago May 5 1996 SYRACUSE - After 34 years of coaching track and cross country, Jerry Minton is retiring. For the last 27 years, Minton has been the boys' track coach at Wawasee.He is the only boys' track coach in the history of the high school and has been the boys' cross country coach the last 24 years.He is also the only girls' cross country coach Wawasee has ever had.
10 Years Ago July 15 1995 Michelle Jones, daughter of Glen and Chris Jones, Rochester, won the creed speaking contest at the Indiana FFA state convention last month.Students who had previously won chapter and district level competitions competed in the state finals round. 25 Years Ago July 15 1980 One-time Warsaw baker Arden Kincaide, 604 Pam St., likes to joke around.Last week he left an old beaten up billfold (with no identification) at Zale's Drug, East Center Street Plaza, to see if anyone would claim it.No one did.But somebody wrapped it up and slipped it into his mailbox ...his postman carried it back to the post office and Arden received a call to pick up a parcel.He did.It cost him 87 cents.

10 Years Ago August 17 1994 WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The 1994 National Water Ski Championships were held in West Palm Beach, Fla., Aug.9-13, and local skiers from Wawasee High School fared well in the Boys 3 Division. Brock Maning of Camelot Lake in Milford placed second in jumping with a launch of 138 feet.Brandon Bucher of Cindonway Shores, Syracuse, was sixth in tricks with 4,240 points and placed fourth in slalom with a score of 52 buoys.Bucher's combined scores in all three events placed him second in the overall competition with a score of 2,897.
10 Years Ago July 29 1995 Kosciusko County Home Extension office gave away a quilt and gift certificate during the county fair.Winner of the quilt was Paula Diekhoff.Julie Popenfoose won a gift certificate for a bed and breakfast. 25 Years Ago July 29 1980 Dr.Joseph Thallemer will return from Los Angeles, Calif., in August with plans to locate in the Warsaw area as an optometrist specializing in "low vision" problems. Dr.Thallemer has been working as a resident, completing his training at the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic four days a week in Los Angeles.

Ousley graduated from Wawasee High School in 1994.She is the daughter of Troy and Rhonda Ousley, Leesburg. 25 Years Ago January 17 1981 With an impressive record of 42 years of public service, Floyd Miner went to work at a downtown Warsaw office for the last time Jan.16. The 76-year-old Miner officially retired as the secretary-treasurer of the Farmer's Mutual Relief Association.He was succeeded by June Thomas, who was elected as the new secretary-treasurer when the annual association meeting was held.

Mrs.David L.(Maria) Henderson, 42, Warsaw, recently was appointed postmaster of the Claypool Post Office by the Postmaster General in Washington, D.C.Henderson replaces Alton Bouse, who retired June 27 after 15 years on the job.

He has resigned as pastor of the Winona Lake Brethren Church to accept the position, succeeding Dr.John J.Davis, who will assume the duties of executive vice president of Grace Schools.
10 Years Ago Feb.26 1987 Area banker V.Edgar Stanley is one of 16 people to be recognized nationally for his heroics last May when he saved a 1-year-old baby in a Rochester house fire.Stanley, board chairman at Counting House Bank, Warsaw, was notified he is being recognized with a Carnegie Medal for heroism. 25 Years Ago Feb.26 1972 Rochester High School captured its second consecutive sectional cage crown with a 60-58 triumph over Warsaw at the Warsaw Sectional, but it was the Zebras' Bruce Grimm that did all the work.The 6-0 junior cager powered Rochester into the Elkhart regional with a 44-point effort in the title bout.

The course provided instruction in marine deck duties, basic piloting and in-land rules of the road.Other training included ship structure, communications, emergency and lifesaving procedures, marlinespike seamanship, vessel operations and firefighting. 25 Years Ago October 17 1981 Chuck Hartley accepted a certificate, pin, patch and a check from Times-Union assistant circulation manager after being named "Carrier of the Year."The honor was bestowed on the Jefferson Elementary School pupil as part of International Newspaper Carrier Day.
