Scott Sebo, a junior who has been playing in the No.1 position all year for Warsaw, fired a five over par 75 at the tough Erskine Golf Club to finish third individually and earn a trip to Indianapolis next week.
10 Years Ago May 16 1993 Some people slow down as they age.Others, like one Kosciusko County man, get faster and stronger, and never lose their competitive spirit. Dick Lehman, a 57-year-old avid bicyclist, is gearing up for some serious competition at the fourth biennial National Senior Olympics.This June, Lehman will join about 7,000 other athletes age 55 and older at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge as they compete in 18 different sports. 25 Years Ago May 16 1978 Junior bowlers from Warsaw fared quite well at the state tournament in Merrillville last weekend and now must sit back to see what the competition can come up with.
10 Years Ago October 1 1993 Suzie Light of Warsaw has been named assistant director of the Kosciusko County Foundation. Light has been involved with United Way of Kosciusko County, Kosciusko County Council of Aging and Aged Inc.and Sacred Heart School and Church in volunteer capacities.She recently acted as facilitator for Kosciusko County Step Ahead Focus Groups and assisted that organization in developing a plan of action. 25 Years Ago October 1 1978 Gary Williamson, 18, Warsaw, displayed his heifer, "Chris," after it was named the champion commercial beef at the Indiana State Fair this summer.Williamson, a member of Atwood Neverquitters 4-H Club, won the reserve grand champion trophy with "Chris" at the Kosciusko County 4-H Fair in August.
10 Years Ago October 19 1991 Three members of the Warsaw Community High School girls' swim team finished in the top three places during the finals of the Northern Lakes Conference Championship meets Saturday.They are freshman Cathy Lundin, junior Kristi Sutton and sophomore Rachael Koehlinger.Lundin captured first place in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly, achieving a new conference record time of 59.64.
10 Years Ago September 27 1992 Navy Petty Officer 1st Class George K.Susan is currently aboard the tank landing ship USS Schenectady, homeported in San Diego off the coast of Somalia, to back up an airlift of U.N.troops to the famine-stricken nation. Susan is the son of George K.Susan, North Webster.He joined the Navy in September 1975. 25 Years Ago September 27 1977 Some 70 area girls took part in activities at the Warsaw Girls' Club. Ping pong winners included Julie Widup, Becky Lindsy and Cathy Polston.In bingo, Eirn Murphy won the four corners games, Terry Brown the blackout and Michelle Polston, Carolyn Howard and Toni Widup the anyway game.
10 Years Ago July 5 1992 Jamie Phillips, 22, a 1988 graduate of Warsaw Community High School, has signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs organization and left for Huntington, W.Va., where he will begin playing minor league baseball. Phillips was a three-year letterman and a member of the 1988 Warsaw Tigers who advanced to the Final Four.He moved on to play for four years at Goshen College before being spotted by pro scouts. 25 Years Ago July 5 1977 Carl H.Andres, Leesburg, retired from Northern Indiana Public Service Co.July 1, ending a career with the utility dating back to 1945. Andres, an electric meterman in the Warsaw district, joined NIPSCO as a meter apprentice, then advanced to meterman helper, single phase meterman and polyphase meterman.
10 Years Ago May 20 1993 MIDDLEBURY - The Warsaw girls track team literally had a "field" day at the Northern Lakes Conference Championship Meet. Sparked by a record-setting performance by senior Amy Miles in the discus and shot put events, the Lady Tigers racked up 103 points to win the annual seven-team competition at Northridge High School.Miles set new NLC Meet records by winning the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 8 inches and the discus with an effort of 132 feet, 5.5 inches to lead the Lady Tigers to their third straight NCL Meet championship. 25 Years Ago May 20 1978 SOUTH WHITLEY - Indiana State Police Trooper J.Wayne Reese will become the South Whitley marshal effective May 15 following his official retirement as a state police officer.
10 Years Ago May 24 1993 FRANKLIN - A Warsaw man was among those Franklin College students who received awards for their work on college publications. The Indiana Collegiate Press Association convention recognized Ryan Sparrow, son of Dennis and Kathy Sparrow, Warsaw, for his work on two Franklin publications.Sparrow was third in the news photo category for The Franklin, and first in photo essay or picture story for the Wellhouse.
10 Years Ago November 23 1991 NORFOLK, Va.- Marine Pfc.Matthew Bussard, son of Terry and Elaine Bussard, Warsaw, has completed the basic aviation ordnanceman course. During the course at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Naval Air Station Memphis, Millington, Tenn., Bussard received instruction in basic mathematics, physics, electricity, electronics, small arms, electrically fired aircraft guns and troubleshooting aircraft weapons systems. The 1990 graduate of Warsaw Community High School joined the Marine Corps in January.

The note said, "Hello, I would appreciate it very much if you would complete the following information and return a card to me."It was signed by Todd Gooding, of Park Community School, Three Rivers, Mich.Smith said she plans to send a card to the youngster.

The award is given annually by the association's board of directors in honor of outstanding achievement in the waterworks industry. 25 Years Ago December 18 1977 Warsaw Community High School linebacker Phil DeGaetano capped an excellent football season by recently being named to the Bloomington Herald Telephone junior all-state first defensive team. DeGaetano led the Tigers in defensive points and was Warsaw's only first team selection of the Northern Lakes Conference team.He accumulated 160 tackle points on 31 solos, 67 assists and several recovered and caused fumbles.

Participants from Edgewood Middle School were Nathan Taylor, tenor saxophone; Rhianna Franklin, flute; Elizabeth Cole, trumpet; John Gremling, trombone; and Justin Miller, tuba.Lakeview students were Amy Bollman, oboe, and Steve Slaughter, trombone.
