10 Years Ago September 12 1990 Warsaw Community High School English teacher Jane Starner was one of 150 educators representing 30 states at the annual Teacher Institute at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., last month.The program concerned impressionism and post-impressionism. 25 Years Ago September 12 1975 Army Pvt.Mark D.Conley, son of Mr.and Mrs.Bert Conley, Etna Green, completed nine weeks of advanced individual training Aug.27 at the U.S.Army Infantry Training Center, Ft.Polk. He received general training as a light weapons infantryman and as a mortar and recoilless rifle crewman, in addition to specialized weapons instruction. He also was taught the proper use of high explosives and the placement, detection and disarming of mines.
10 Years Ago April 19 1990 Principal James Smith of Manchester High School has announced that Eris Vanessa Migliorini will be the Class of 1990 Valedictorian and Sonya Marlene Yoder will be Salutatorian. Migliorini has a perfect 11.0 grade point average and Yoder has a 10.909 grade point average on an 11.0 scale at the end of seven semesters. 25 Years Ago April 19 1975 Syracuse Town Marshal Dale W.Sparklin has announced that he is retiring from the Syracuse Police Department since he turned 65 earlier this month. Sparklin was appointed head of the police department in January of 1974 by the town board.

The daughter of Jeff and Tina Lawrence, she receives $100 cash. The second place winner was Michael Kausal, son of Michael and Audrey Kausal, and Stacie Hoffman, Daughter of Hal and Aime Hoffman, was third prize winner. 25 Years Ago August 24 1976 Twelve-year-old Bob Sadenwater set a state record at the AAU meet in Columbus.He won a gold and set his record in the 11-12 50 meter breaststroke and took a silver in the 100 meter breast stroke.Bob has been swimming for the past four years at the Y.
10 Years Ago February 18 1992 The Tippecanoe Valley Viking Guard was recently recognized in the "Notable News" newsletter as one of the top nine guard units in the state.The team, which is directed by Mike and Marcie Pearson, is participating in the fifth annual Winter Guard Classic at the Tiger Den at Warsaw Community High School. 25 Years Ago February 18 1977 Native Warsawan James W.Frush has retired from the United States Navy after 22 years of active service.He is the son of Mr.and Mrs.Robert Frush, Warsaw. Frush, a 1954 graduate of Warsaw High School, enlisted in the Navy at Fort Wayne on Oct.21, 1954, and attained the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer prior to his retirement.
10 Years Ago March 4 1993 Samantha Wideman tossed in 17 points to lead the Mentone 7th-grade girls basketball team to a 30-24 victory over Edgewood Wednesday. Wideman also snared eight rebounds and grabbed six steals as Mentone improved to 7-2 on the season. 25 Years Ago March 4 1978 United Telephone Co.has installed the 25,000th telephone in its Warsaw District.The telephone company's district manager, George Scott, announced that the 25,000th instrument went into the home of Mr.and Mrs.Douglas Wrobel at Valley Springs, Rt.7, Warsaw.United's service representative, Julie Ford, took the order for the installation, and Jim Egolf was in charge of the physical installation.

10 Years Ago March 11 1992 BLOOMINGTON - A group trying to inform residents at Indiana University how to save energy by monitoring electrical usage is being led by a 1990 graduate of Warsaw Community High School. Lyn Hartman is coordinator of Student Environmental Action Coalition.The program was initiated at Harvard last year, and is taking place this year in the 11 residence halls. Each month the hall using the least electricity is awarded a ceremony and the Ecolympics traveling trophy.
10 Years Ago September 28 1990 Indianapolis Pike High School English teacher Christie Eherenman, the daughter of Warsaw's Phil and Mary Eherenman, competed in the Ironman Bud Light Endurance Triathlon in Sunapee, N.H., on Sept.8.Eherenman completed the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2 mile run in 14 hours and 29 minutes, which was third in her age group.There were 415 entrants and 382 finished. 25 Years Ago September 28 1975 Four persons with a combined 104 years of service at Arnolt Corp.were honored recently at an awards banquet. She is currently doing her internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, and plans to conduct her residency program at a Rochester, N.Y., hospital. She specializes in neurology. 25 Years Ago September 14 1976 William L.Brenneman, biology teacher at Warsaw Freshman High School, has been selected to receive the National Association of Biology Teachers' Outstanding Biology Teacher Award in Indiana for 1975-76. For his dedication and service to biology students, Brenneman will receive a certificate and a stereomiscroscope.
10 Years Ago April 27 1990 Conservation officer Mike Saffen didn't let his catch get away.He couldn't.His catch was himself.It seems Saffen was out fishing this week and when he tried to jerk the line to snag "the big one," the hook didn't end up in the fish's mouth, but got pulled back into the boat and lodged in Saffen's hand.It required a trip to KCH emergency room to dig out the hook.We wonder if this catch will be the "biggest" of the year? 25 Years Ago April 27 1975 Ronald L.Robinson, 28, was appointed head of the Syracuse Police Department effective April 30 by the town board in special session. Robinson was also appointed officer in charge immediately with the authority to interview and hire applicants for the force.
