Jason Jarrett Smashes Track Record

BROOKLYN, MICH.- Less than a week after picking up his first national-level win, 25-year-old ML Motorsports driver Jason Jarrett has made racing headlines again. Jarrett, the son of Winston Cup points leader Dale Jarrett, ran the fastest lap in Thursday's practice at Michigan International Speedway for Saturday's ARCA RE/MAX Series Flagstar 200 and then backed it up by taking his first pole.The Warsaw-based stock car team sat on the pole for two races last year. Jarrett, in his No.67 Mary Louise Miller-owned Pontiac, circled the two-mile oval at a speed of 185.000 mph in 38.919 seconds. Jarrett became the first ARCA driver to circle the famed oval in under 39 seconds or at 185 mph. NASCAR Busch Series veteran Blaise Alexander will start in the first row with Jarrett after turning a lap time of 39.043 seconds at 184.412 mph.ARCA points leader Frank Kimmel, whose four-race win streak was broken with Jarrett's win last week, qualified third.

Triton Moves To 2-0

WABASH - Triton's varsity football team upped its season record to 2-0 Friday with a 7-0 win at Northfield. Senior running back Joe Potter scampered in from two yards out in the second stanza to put the Trojans up 6-0.Senior Jim Read added the extra-point kick. "I think the better team won," said Northfield coach Tony Uggen."We had numerous opportunities to score, but we made critical mistakes and couldnt overcome them." - Newspapers In Education Newspapers In Education Editor, Times-Union: In about one week, summer vacation will expire and those who are seismically sensitive will perceive subtle shifts in the local terrain as thousands of local youth flood back to school.Many students will have successfully eluded academics for the past several months, prompting teachers to prime pumps and recalibrate brains.Fortunately, some children will enter school having been primed and dusted.Warsaw Community Schools has just concluded another successful elementary Jump-Start summer school session.While concepts involving math, reading, writing and science are standard fare, children in fifth and sixth grades were treated to a unique "text" delivering academic foundations with a local, state, national and international twist.

Rochester Man Drowns In Hunting Accident

ETNA GREEN - A Rochester man drowned Sunday morning when the boat he was hunting from capsized. Michael Elliott, 28, Ind.25, Rochester, was found dead almost an hour after the accident occurred at the J&M Gravel pit. The 12-foot boat, carrying three waterfowl hunters and their hunting dog, began to take on water and capsized shortly after 9 a.m.Sunday.The three men were thrown into the water 150 feet from shore.Mark Senff, the driver of the boat, said he saw Elliott swimming to shore behind him and Jeff Kinsey holding on to the overturned boat. Senff said Elliott attempted to swim back to the boat for an unknown reason.Senff reached shore and could not see Elliott, so he ran to a nearby house and called police. Kinsey managed to keep afloat on the boat and paddled it to shore, but the two men could not locate Elliott.

Police Seek Robbery Suspect

SILVER LAKE - Police are looking for a white male who robbed the McClure Oil station Tuesday night in Silver Lake. According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, the suspect entered the business shortly before 8:30 p.m.and walked around the store before approaching the counter.He then displayed a small black handgun, waved it back and forth, and demanded the money from the cash register. An employee told police she opened the register and placed the whole drawer on the counter.The suspect reportedly pulled the drawer closer and took all of the cash from it before fleeing the business.He was last seen headed northbound on Ind.15 in a blue or silver two-door car.

Nappanee Receives Main Street Award

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Lt.Gov.Kathy Davis recently announced that a Nappanee renovation site has received the Indiana Main Street award for the outstanding adaptive reuse project of 2003. The award is given to a project that brings a historic downtown building back into use or adapts the building for a new use.Owen Weaver, Dave Pottinger and his wife, Faye Walters, along with Jeremy Stutsman and Maija Walters-Stutsman, undertook the rehabilitation of a former lumberyard that most thought would remain vacant until being bulldozed for redevelopment. Against the advice of a financial adviser, the Weaver, Pottinger and Stutsman families purchased the property from Big C Lumber.Renovation took several years to complete, but the area is now being used by many businesses.Former lumber bins have been converted into various leasable spaces and the compound houses a farmers' market, bakery, floral arranger, jeweler and art gallery, among other things.

Butler Names Warsaw Grad Assistant Coach

Warsaw graduate Jennifer Kintzel, who went on to star for Butler's volleyball team, has been named an assistant volleyball coach at Butler. Kintzel was named the team's top assistant by newly hired coach Sharon King. "Jen's energy and enthusiasm will help us get back to the top of the MCC," King said."She will be a terrific asset to this program." Kintzel starred for the Bulldogs as a setter from 1994-1997 and graduated as the all-time assists leader at Butler and in the MCC.The 1997 MCC Player of the Year, Kintzel guided her squad to an MCC Tournament title as well as its first NCAA tournament appearance.She earned all-conference honors four straight years and set school records in assists in a match (79) and in a career (5,483).She is second all-time at Butler in career digs with 1,678 and second with 215 career service aces. She was honored as one of Butler's top 100 students her junior and senior years.

Triathlon Gets Under Way This Weekend

Do you like to swim? Like to run? Like riding a bike? Then chances are the sixth annual triathlon in conjuction with the City of Lakes Balloonfest is for you. The event will get under way June 26 at 8 a.m.in Winona Lake.The triathlon will consist of first swimming a quarter-mile in Winona Lake, riding a bike 13.5 miles around Pierceton and back to Winona Lake, and then running three miles around the town of Winona Lake. According to Phil Eherenman, 330 athletes participated in the event last year and he expects just as many or more this year. Contestants will be grouped in divisions five years apart.Example: the youngest division will range from 15-20 years old.The next would be 21-25, and so on.The event, which is sanctioned by the U.S Association of Triathalons, is open to male and female contestants.

Cardinal Center Hosts Annual 'Help for the Holidays'

Cardinal Center is starting the Christmas season with the annual Help for the Holidays celebration. This year Ramada Plaza Hotel donated 2517 Restaurant for the social gathering.The event will be Dec.13 from 6 p.m.to 9 p.m. "The Ramada is our host for the evening," said Cindy Pergrem of the Cardinal Center. "The purpose of this event," said Pergrem, "is to raise awareness of Cardinal Center and their spirit of giving to and helping adults and children with disabilities and other needs. "The holiday time is a time for giving," said Pergrem.She said this is a chance to give back to the community and help others. The evening will include dinner and entertainment.Dinner will be prepared by Viewpoint Restaurant.Entertainment will be the Gentle Winds Ensemble and the Zimmer Choir plus three guest speakers.The speakers are three families who will share their experiences with the Cardinal Center's help. "It will be a pretty exciting event," said Pergrem.

Suspect In Odometer Tampering Surrenders, Booked At County Jail

The Warsaw man accused of odometer fraud and other charges turned himself in to police Thursday morning. Chad Allan Gottschalk, 38, of 2028 Maple Run, Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:30 a.m.Thursday on one count of felony theft and four counts of forgery.His bond was set at $40,000. Gottschalk's wife, Karen Gottschalk, 37, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail Wednesday at 1:14 p.m.on two counts of check forgery.Her bond was set at $20,000. Chad Gottschalk may face up to 15 counts of forgery (Class C felony), four counts of theft (Class D felony) and four counts of odometer altering/odometer fraud (Class D felony). The Gottschalks allegedly purchased luxury vehicles with high mileage then turned back the odometers or replaced the odometers with one purchased on the Internet or in a junkyard. Once the odometers were altered or replaced, the vehicles were sold for nearly 100 percent profit.
