For Northridge, The Past Has Passed

On country singer Vince Gill's CD "Souvenirs," Gill sings about how there "Ain't No Future in the Past." Frank Amato and his Northridge Raiders can testify to that. On Oct.31, Amato, in his first year as head football coach at Northridge, persuaded his team to wipe away its past. The 1-8 record in the regular season? Never happened. The players, eager to find some sort of success to salvage the season, bought into what Amato was selling. They swaggered into "Death Valley" and stunned the 5-6 Tippecanoe Valley 17-0 in a second-round sectional matchup. The Raiders are 1-0 in the 1997 postseason. "One of our philosophies - I've been a proponent of this since 1985 - is every week we start 0-0," Amato explained."Our goal is to be 1-0 after Friday's game.I used that philosophy at (South Bend) St.Joe, and we're using it here.

TV Grad Tyson Has New Haven In Sectional Finals

As teams advance in the postseason, the competition they face becomes tougher. When the 10-1 NorthWood Panthers square off against the 7-4 New Haven Bulldogs in Nappanee Friday night, the competition will be fierce. Not only has New Haven coach Tyson Silveus tracked the Panthers all season, he has watched them play for years. "I'm a Tippecanoe Valley graduate so I know quite a bit about NorthWood," said Silveus."I've seen my brothers play against NorthWood, and we played them the past two years when I was at Angola. And I have tracked NorthWood all season." However, just because Silveus knows what to expect does not mean his team will overlook the Panthers.

Irish Fans Say Goodbye To Holtz

SOUTH BEND - Lou Holtz has coached the Fighting Irish for the last time in Notre Dame Stadium, and he went out with an exclamation point. Holtz, who announced last week that he was retiring from college football's top coaching spot saw his Irish club dominate a second straight opponent in as many weeks. It was victory No.100 for the Holtz at Notre Dame and No.216 overall in his 27-year career. Last week, it was a smashing of Pittsburgh by 54 points; this week it was a 62-0 shellacking of hapless Rutgers. The 62 points is record high for the Holtz era and most points by the Fighting Irsh since 1977.

Depth, Experience Lead Warsaw Boys To Win

Two of the things fourth-year coach Doug Ogle said he really likes about his varsity Warsaw boys basketball team - depth and experience - led the Tigers to a 10-point victory over Kosciusko County opponent Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday evening. In the season opener for both teams, as well as the first time the two programs squared off in five years, the visiting Tigers used both depth and experience to beat the Class 3A No.9 Vikings 54-44 in front of a near-capacity crowd. While the Vikings got 36 of their 44 points from two players and were without the services of senior Aaron Reed and sophomore Chad Hoffer, the Tigers had three playes in double figures and got eight points and five assists from point guard Shawn Cabrera.

Returners Leave Valley Confident

MENTONE - Gregg Sciarra is not prone to exaggeration. Never has been.Probably never will be. So when he puts the words team and best into the same sentence, you sit up and take notice. "This is the best team I've had," Sciarra, in his sixth year as Valley head coach, said. Beg pardon? "The best team I've had," he repeated. He didn't say it once.Didn't say it twice. Sciarra said it three times. And the season hasn't even started. The source of Sciarra's optimism? Players.More importantly, returning starting players. He has more of them than any of the other five area teams. Back are Jeff Brown, Darren Parker and Nick Stutzman, who all started last year. The two starters Sciarra lost to graduation were point guard Quentin Law and center Jason Cumberland. Parker will be the point guard on this year's team. The two new starters will be Eric Love at shooting guard and Scott Cooksey at the post.Brown and Stutzman are the forwards.

Warsaw Netters Secure Sectional Title

The Warsaw Tennis Sectional on Saturday went according to form as Warsaw defeated Wawasee in the championship match 5-0 to advance to the Elkhart Central Regional on Wednesday. Both teams got to the finals with easy wins in the first round.Warsaw beat Valley 4-1 as Craig Harman handed Eric Love just his second loss of the season in a 6-3, 6-0 win.Ryan VanPuffelen blanked Drew Shafer 6-0, 6-0 at No.2 singles.Valley's only win came at No.2 doubles, where Aaron Martin and Brian Love beat Eric Grossnickle and Matt Krizmanich 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). For Wawasee, it was one of the most impressive tennis scores possible as the Warriors won eight sets from Whitko 6-0 and the other two 6-1.Andy Cole at No.1 singles, Quyen Tran and Jared Mahnensmith at No.1 doubles and Farhan Haq and Shane Beer won at No.2 doubles with scores of 6-0, 6-0.

Goshert Takes Over Squire Fortunes

Two trademarks identified the Manchester Squires last season: quickness and the ability to overachieve. First-year coach Gary Goshert asks his team to do the same again this year. For the second straight year, Manchester is not blessed with much height.Five of the players on the Squires roster are 5-foot-11.Their only returning starter taller than 5-11 is 6-4 forward/center Jake Peden. But if the Squires have one strength, it's quickness in the backcourt. The Reimer brothers - Brandon and Rex - are two of the quickest guards around. "Compared to the other teams we play, we're not tall," Goshert said."I think we have players who are pretty quick.Team quickness will be an advantage for us." The Squires played in the Peru Jamboree Tuesday, but Goshert has not settled on a starting lineup. He did name six players he will rely on - Brandon Reimer, Rex Reimer, Peden, Chris Enyeart, Eric Swan and Scot Croner.

Triton Tops Wawasee In Four Games

BOURBON -ÊAfter dropping four close matches Saturday in the Clinton Prairie Invitational, the Triton volleyball team was ready to get back on track. The Trojans did just that Tuesday night, defeating Wawasee in four games 21-16, 18-21, 21-6, 21-12. "We just put in a new lineup last night," said Triton coach Gayle Perry."We put a new lineup in, the same girls but in new spots.I think they adapted very well and learned it quickly. We walked through it again tonight before the game. These girls are good students of the game, and they adjusted very well." In the first game, Triton held a 4-3 advantage when senior Carly Feldman stepped to the serving line.Feldman served up five straight Trojan points to give Triton a lead it never relinquished. Wawasee got as close as three points, making the score 14-11 after Cheryl Thomas served up four consecutive points.

Wawasee CC Team Soars To 10th At State

BLOOMINGTON -ÊWawasee's Rob Chalfant and Triton's Nate Gephart each earned All-State cross country honors, and Wawasee's team placed 10th out of 20 teams at the Indiana State Cross Country Meet Saturday in Bloomington. Gephart's time of 15:54 was good enough for 12th place overall. It was the highest placing ever for a Triton runner. "He broke the school record he set the previous week at the semistate," said Triton coach Curt Kreft. "He ran really well.We told him to run the first two miles hard to get a good position, and then it was all guts and effort after that.It was really exciting." But it was not Gephart's first trip to Bloomington for the state meet.

Henson, Whitko More Comfortable

SOUTH WHITLEY - When Whitko named Dave Henson as the basketball coach last year, the season began any way but normal. Practices had already begun before Henson arrived.Coach had to learn about the players on the fly.The players had to adapt to a new coach on the run. All the Wildcats managed to do was go 17-6 and win the sectional. Imagine what coach and players can do now that this season is actually a normal season. "I came in here a year ago today," Henson said on Nov.11."I feel like we're ahead of the game." Henson is in place. His players are in place. Now Henson's game plan is also in place, moreso than last year.

Wawasee Surprises Warsaw, Advances To Tennis Regional

Wawasee was not favored to win the Warsaw Sectional Saturday afternoon. In fact, the Warriors had already lost to Warsaw 4-1 in the regular season, and the Tigers were looking to repeat their early season results. Maybe someone should have told those facts to Wawasee, because the Warriors defeated the Tigers 3-2 to win their second consecutive sectional championship. "Winning the sectional was one of our goals early in the season," said Wawasee coach Roger Brady."Now we've done that and we will look to the regional at Concord on Tuesday." After defeating Tippecanoe Valley 4-1 in the first round of the sectional, the Warriors advanced to the championship match.Warsaw advanced to the championship by defeating Whitko 5-0. And then the battle began. Things looked good for the Tigers after the No.1 singles match.Warsaw's Brad Simmons downed Wawasee's Evan Gerard 6-1, 6-2 to put the Tigers up 1-0. However, things changed quickly for the Warsaw squad.

Panthers Put A Hurt On New Haven

NAPPANEE -ÊNorthWood's defense put a leash on the New Haven Bulldogs Friday night in the Class 3A football sectional championship. The offense wasn't too shabby, either, as the Panthers defeated New Haven 48-3. Going into the game, Charlie Roeder was just 21 yards away from tying the NorthWood career rushing record set by Aaron Huber last season.Huber's record was 2,853 career yards, and Roeder passed that mark on a 53-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.Unofficially, Roeder has 2,901 yards in his career. Roeder returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown, returned an interception for 45 yards that set up a touchdown, threw two touchdown passes and rushed for 69 yards and one touchdown. The Panthers started off slowly as they turned the ball over on downs after just six plays in their first drive. However, New Haven would not have the ball for long as Bill Barkimer's first pass attempt was intercepted by Roeder after only four Bulldog plays.

As Time Ticks, Warriors Slip

Tick-Tick-Tick. For Wawasee's Jerry Davis, time is of the essence. Davis needs to move his team toward the win column if he wants to avoid a repeat of current history in Syracuse. In his first two seasons at Wawasee, Davis is a combined 13-29.That's enough to make any Warrior fan's eyes water. These are the same fans that ran Gary Goshert all the way to Manchester. All Goshert did in his 10 years at Wawasee was win.He tallied a record of 124-88 between 1986 and 1996, including two 17-win seasons. The Goshert era included an NLC championship in 1993 and a sectional championship in '95, knocking off archrival Warsaw. The Warriors experienced only three losing years under Goshert's tutelage, the worst being 7-15 in 1990.

Whitko Wildcats Find No Way To Slow Rochester Offense

ROCHESTER - In the first half of Friday's football game between Rochester and Whitko the two teams combined for 41 points and 357 yards of total offense. In the second half the offensive sparks stopped flying as the two teams could manage only one touchdown on 208 yards of total offense as Rochester held off Three Rivers Conference rival Whitko 35-13. If the first four minutes were any indication, a shootout could have been expected. On the opening kickoff, the Zebras' Deric Bell brought the ball out to his own 41-yard line, giving Rochester excellent field position. The Zebras took advantage as they mounted a seven-play, 59-yard drive that culminated with quarterback Kevin Clark keeping the ball and taking it in from three yards out. Whitko would refuse to be outdone. On the subsequent kickoff, Wildcat kickoff returner and tailback Josh Gonzalez returned the kick 84 yards, pulling his team even with Rochester at 7-7.

Warsaw Kickers Survive Sectional Game

GOSHEN -ÊSurvive and advance. As cliche as that phrase is, that's what it comes down to in the postseason. Tuesday afternoon at Bethany Christian High School, the Warsaw Tiger girls soccer team survived and advanced. The Tigers held off a physical Lakeland squad for a 2-1 win in both teams' opening match of sectional play. Lakeland dominated much of the play early on but failed to mount a legitimate scoring threat. In fact, the Lakers failed to have a shot on goal in the first half and managed just two corners kicks. Warsaw managed three shots and four corners but both teams appeared to be headed into halftime knotted in a scoreless tie. That was until the 38th minute when Bri Myers scored after Abby Rankin hit a direct kick that went to Melissa Kawsky who headed a ball that fell in front of Myers. She quickly gained control of the ball and tucked in the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 halftime lead.

Valley Steals Win From Warsaw

While it wasn't the best offensive performance of his high school career, a key defensive play by Chad Hoffer helped Tippecanoe Valley's varsity boys basketball team escape Warsaw with a 63-59 win in Wednesday's season opener. With Valley clinging to a 61-59 lead, the host Tigers tried inbounding the ball with 3.2 seconds remaining in the game, needing to go the length of the court. The 6-foot-2 Hoffer, guarding the baseline, intercepted the inbound pass, collected the ball and drove to the basket and was fouled. He hit both free throws and the Vikings left Warsaw with their second consecutive win in the Tiger Den. Hoffer, who scored just four points in the first half, finished the game with 14 points. He was 4 of 16 from the field and 5 of 7 from the free throw line.He also pulled down six rebounds, dished out six assists and made three steals, the last of which helped put the game away.

Warsaw Netters Try To Snap Goshen Streak

Warsaw's tennis team will play Goshen today in the Elkhart Central Regional; the only question is where. If it doesn't rain, Goshen and Warsaw will meet in the first round of the regional at Northridge High School at 4:30 p.m.today. If it does rain, Goshen and Warsaw will play at the Elkhart Athletic Club, at county roads 13 and 106, at 4 p.m.today. Goshen is chasing its eighth straight regional title.A year ago the Redskins, who had lost to the Tigers during the regular-season dual match and at the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament, beat the Tigers 3-2 in the regional championship match. This year the Tigers hope the opposite happens. They lost to Goshen 3-2 in the dual match then took second to Goshen at the NLC Tournament. Warsaw tennis coach Andy Lewis is optimistic the opposite will happen. When Goshen won the dual match, the Redskins beat the Tigers at two and three singles and one doubles.

Warsaw Boys Get Past Wawasee

With the Northern Lakes Conference in an upheaval, Warsaw and Wawasee had a chance to take control of second place on Tuesday in boys cross country. Unbeaten Goshen sits alone at the top, but that stool has lost a leg or two.Goshen's top runner may be out for the year with a broken collarbone. That only made this meet larger because the Redskins seem to be ripe for the picking, and it was on the mind of the coaches.

Bell Trying To Add Stability At Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY - Just as the school structure itself is under construction, the Whitko High School girls basketball program also is in another renovation stage. The Wildcats, who finished last season with a 5-16 record overall, a 2-5 mark in the Three Rivers Conference and a one-point loss to Peru in the first round of the sectional, open the 2006-2007 campaign tonight when they host Central Noble. Whitko enters the season with a new head coach in Rob Bell, the Wildcats' third head coach in six years. Bell, who spent the past four years as an assistant at Columbia City for Hall of Fame coach Wayne Krieger, was hired in June to take over for Ryan Cunningham, who resigned after years at the helm of the Whitko program. In Cunningham's four-year tenure, the Wildcats won a total of 17 games and were 6-22 in the TRC.
