Tiger Tennis Team Won't Have To Get By Goshen

For six consecutive years the Warsaw boys tennis team has won the sectional, only to turn around and fall to Goshen in the regional. That won't happen this year. Warsaw won its sectional Saturday with two convincing wins, 4-1 over Wawasee in the semifinal and 5-0 over Tippecanoe Valley in the championship, but the Goshen Redskins fell to Fairfield 3-2. Is Warsaw coach Andy Lewis, who has coached the Tigers to their last six sectional titles, fully aware of the fact that Goshen won't be there? You better believe it. "I think Goshen out of the tournament is kind of like playing the Chicago Bulls without Michael Jordan," said Lewis."It's up for grabs for whoever wants it." The Tigers, who bring an 11-3 record to today's 5 p.m.Concord Sectional, will play Elkhart Central (12-5) in the semifinal round. In the other semifinal, Fairield (18-2) will square off with DeKalb (17-3).The winners will play for the championship at 5 p.m.Wednesday.

Munster Ends Warsaw' Season

SOUTH BEND - The Warsaw Tigers put themselves in position to have a chance to win Saturday against Munster in the South Bend boys tennis semistate at Leeper Park. Down 2-0, the Tigers pushed the remaining three matches to three sets but couldn't prevail in a 5-0 loss to the Mustangs. Munster's talented No.1 and 2 singles players were the first off the court with wins.Billy Heuer ousted Warsaw senior Jason Sells 6-2, 6-0.While the typically intense Sells fought and battled, he was unable to string together enough points to grab the momentum away from Heuer. The Tigers' Mike Chanthalangsy was more succesful in winning games against Munster's Tom Cafmeyer but still fell 6-2, 6-3. Chanthalangsy, usually a baseliner, was succesful at attacking the net against Cafmeyer. While Munster moved to the brink of a semistate final berth in relatively short time, the Mustangs would have to wait for more than hour before they could start celebrating.

Jamboree Signals Start Of Girls' Hoop Season

It was the jamboree. It doesn't count in the standings. It doesn't affect scoring averages.Sometimes, the teams will have a totally different look come the season opener. But they play it anyway. So coaches use it as a glorified practice or a scrimmage situation and get some evaluation for those who haven't played against varsity experience. Here is a look at how the quarters unfolded Tuesday in the Warsaw Girls' Basketball Jamboree. 1Q: Whitko 18, Warsaw 15 The Tigers gave the Wildcats the shots, and they buried them.Whitko hit on 8 of 13 shots from the field, led by inside players Melissa Sands (2 of 4, 4 points) and Brieann Starkweather (2 of 3, 4 points).

Warsaw Spikers Face Familiar Foe In Northrop

If Warsaw is to stay successful in the 4A volleyball postseason, it will have to remain on the same defensive trek. Warsaw utilized a double block in the middle of the net in the Goshen Sectional last weekend, and it produced a sectional championship with a surprise win over Elkhart Central in the title match. And it was that defensive clamp that neutralized the Blazers' big hitters. It is that kind of game plan and mentality that will be necessary against Warsaw's opponent, Fort Wayne Northrop, in the East Noble Regional on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Irish Title Hopes Dashed

SOUTH BEND - It was an emotional roller coaster ride for Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz. And it only took a matter of seconds. When Autry Denson ran a punt back 80 yards Saturday against Ohio State and cut the Buckeye lead from 29-16 to 29-22 with 3:35 left in the game, the Irish mentor was as excited as he has been in his 11-year tenure with the team. But when the play was called back because of a holding call on Ty Goode at the beginning of the amazing run, he was probably as low as he has ever been. "When Autry Denson ran the punt back, I don't know when I have been more excited," Holtz said."When it was called back, all chances of winning the game were over. The better football team won this game, make no mistake about it." When Denson was celebrating in the end zone with his teammates, Holtz took a look down the field for penalty flags; he saw none.He took a second look a few seconds later and saw the yellow hanky lying on the 20-yard line.

Tigers Set For Sectional

When Scott Bauer took the head coaching position of the Warsaw boys soccer program, he had expectations. "Well, my expectations were to improve upon last year's record, win the conference, and we didn't win the conference," said Bauer."But if we win on Saturday, we'll finish second by ourselves. The team (Goshen) that won the conference only loss came to us.I'm not completely disapointed, but I thought we played farely well in the conference except the draw to Wawasee. The draws to Northridge and Concord I could see." The Tigers did improve upon last year's record. After a 3-1 win Thursday over Huntington North, the Tigers improved their overall season record to 6-4-4.A year ago Warsaw finished its season with a 7-9-3 record. After the Tigers host Plymouth Saturday night at Fisher Field - Senior Night - they will play Peru at 8 p.m.Monday in the Columbia City Sectional.

Concord Slips Past Warsaw

Heading into sectional play next week, the Warsaw Tigers couldn't have asked for much more.Well, that's not entirely true, they could have gotten the win. But everything else about Warsaw's 27-19 loss to Concord Friday at Fisher Field was a step in the right direction for a young football program. "This is one of the highlights of my coaching career so far," Warsaw coach Phil Jensen said."A bunch of kids that had every reason to hang up the pads a long time ago come out here and played a team like Concord tough. "This is one of the upper teams in our conference, and our kids came out and laid it on the line," he said."This is a huge step for our program." Concord is a team that lost close games to Plymouth and NorthWood, while beating Goshen - three teams that combined to beat Warsaw 100-0 this year.

Penn Kingsmen Burst Warsaw's Bubble

Based on school enrollment, there was no David or Goliath in Friday's Warsaw/Penn first round sectional football game. Based on tradition, there was. And there was no storybook ending in this one.Penn, playing the role of Goliath, ended Warsaw's season with a 51-16 score that Penn coach Chris Geesman said was closer than it looks. "I never expected this," said Geesman, who in 27 seasons with the Kingsmen is 269-43."Trust me, this was not an easy game. The score says it was, but it wasn't.Phil (Jensen, Warsaw coach) is closer than what he thinks.I'm glad I'm about to retire.I'll only have to contend with him for a couple more years." The win improves Penn's overall season record to 9-1, while the Tigers finish their season at 8-2.Jensen is 21-19 in four seasons as Warsaw's head coach.

Warsaw Girls Complete One State To State

When the starter's pistol sounds at Saturday's Elkhart Girls Cross Country Regional, the race will have a local flavor. Girls teams from Warsaw and NorthWood as well as an individual from Wawasee (Brittany Winchester) will converge on Elkhart's Ox Bow Park for the Elkhart Central Regional. However, the race will not be easy for any team involved. "Last year we had confidence going into the regional," said Warsaw coach Paul Sibray."This year the competition is going to be a lot stiffer." "It will be a real challenge for us," said NorthWood coach Kirt Hunsberger."We will need to run our best race to advance. If you run a bad race at this point, you are done.I have talked to the girls all week about how there are no second chances at this level. We will definitely need to put everyone's best races together to have a chance.

Triton Dismisses Culver

ARGOS -ÊAt Thursday night's Argos Sectional, Triton's JV players wore homemade T-shirts that said "Big Blue Slam." Unfortunately for the Culver Cavaliers, they were on the receiving end of Triton's "Big Blue Slam." The No.5 (A) Triton volleyball team defeated Culver 15-2, 15-1 to advance to the semifinal round of the Argos Class A Sectional at 11 a.m.Saturday. Beth Workman started the first game with an ace. After Workman gave Triton a 2-0 lead, Ashley Scroggs stepped up to serve a point for Culver. With the Trojans up 10-2, Workman stepped to the line again and served up another ace along with three other points to give Triton a 14-2 advantage. Rachel Speicher served up the last point of the game on Triton's next possession to put the Trojans up 1-0 in the match.

Warsaw Girls Win Argos Regional In Dramatic Fashion

ARGOS - The old coaching adage is true, Warsaw's Mike Getz said, defense wins championships. It certainly did Tuesday evening for the first-year coach and his Tiger girls soccer team, as Warsaw downed Argos 3-2, outscoring the host Dragons in a penalty kick shootout to advance to Saturday's South Bend Adams Semistate. A team that had outscored its opponents 79-10 coming into last night, including 17-0 in the three sectional contests, Warsaw lined up in the penalty kick shootout with four defenders and a midfielder. In a rotating style (Argos-Warsaw-Argos), Argos made the first three of its five shootout attempts with Alyssa Bailey, Ashton Kendall and Melissa VanDuyne. The Tigers countered with successful attempts from Emma Bean, Katie Sudhoff and Trista Wadkins. Warsaw gained momentum when Chantal Gordon sent Argos' fourth attempt sailing over the goal, and then Claire Beckett cashed in on the Tigers' next attempt.

Plymouth Slips Past Wawasee 17-14

PLYMOUTH -ÊLast week was big for Wawasee football as the Warriors celebrated a win over Northwood and learned coach Joe Rietveld was named the Indianapolis Colts High School Coach of the Week. Although Warrior football hasn't had much to celebrate in recent years, the Warriors found themselves going to Plymouth Friday night with a 4-1 record and a top 20 ranking in the most recent 4A poll. Like Wawasee, Plymouth had a big win last week, dusting off Elkhart Memorial 38-30.Both teams stood with a 2-1 record in the conference and both knew after the Warsaw - Goshen match-up on this same night that the winner of this game would stand in a tie for second in the NLC with championship hopes still alive. That second-place honor went to the Rockies as they slipped away with a 17-14 win in a game that was certainly a tale of two halves. It was all Rockies in the first half as the host team scored on their first two possessions, taking a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Valley Closes Out Whitko

AKRON - In a 27-16 loss Friday at Three Rivers Conference rival Tippecanoe Valley, a game that featured a disfunctional public address system, a professional tailgater and a flame-shooting pickup truck near the south end zone, it was a bit of deja vu for Whitko's varsity football team. After playing state-ranked Rochester tough for three quarters on its own turf a week ago, only to allow two key fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 15-point loss, Whitko trailed Valley 20-16 going into the final frame Friday but gave up a touchdown and then threw an interception with 1:40 remaining in the game.

Warsaw, Wawasee Slip A Little

DUNLAP - Regular season accomplishments are only indicators of what could happen in end-of-season tournaments, not always the norm. Prime examples of that were the Warsaw boys and Wawasee girls teams at Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference cross country championship at Ox Bow Park. Both entered the championship with high hopes after successful regular seasons, only to slip a little in the race. The Warsaw boys were 4-2 in the dual meets in the regular season, but fell to fifth place; while the Wawasee girls, who had a dual win against Plymouth, finished behind the Pilgrims for third place.

Goshen Ends Warsaw NLC Win Streak

It's easy, seventh-year Warsaw football coach Phil Jensen said Friday night, to say you're learning something when you're winning. The challenge is to bounce back when facing a setback. Certainly Warsaw was dealt a setback under the lights Friday night at Fisher Field, as Northern Lakes Conference rival Goshen upended the Tigers 15-10, ending their 17-game NLC win streak. The Tigers' last conference defeat came to NorthWood in 1999. "It's a been a long time since we've been on this end of it," Jensen said as his players walked off the field in the distance, tears and a stunned look in their eyes."We'll see what we're made of." The loss drops Warsaw to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NLC, while Goshen remains undefeated at 6-0 and 4-0. Two heavyweights battling for first place in the conference, Warsaw and Goshen traded blows right up to the end.

Little Parity At TRC Football's Day At The Dome

Four Three Rivers Conference high school football games were played at the RCA Dome Saturday, but all were the same in one way. All were blowouts. Southwood 63, North Miami 6.Tippecanoe Valley 35, Oak Hill 0.Whitko 32, Northfield 6.Rochester 41, Manchester 7. The team that scored first won every game. "I didn't see all the games, but it seems to me, the team that gets off to a good start feels comfortable (here) right away," Manchester coach Al Bailey said."They gained momentum and took off." Whitko 32, Northfield 6 Whitko's offense rolled up 337 rushing years, and Whitko's defense shut down Northfield on -6 yards in the second half as the Wildcats reached .500. Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger has said one good way to beat Whitko is to stop Jimmy Linn. Northfield couldn't contain, let alone stop, the halfback.Linn rushed for 179 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns - in three quarters.
