Wawasee Girls Win Soccer Sectional

GOSHEN - It took nine years to build the program, but now the Wawasee High School girls soccer team has arrived. Saturday night at Bethany Christian, Wawaseee topped Kosciusko County rival Warsaw 2-0 to capture its first sectional crown since the program started in 1997. The Warriors dominated play with the midfield combination of Kaitlin Cunningham and Francisca Hoffman. That dominance paid off in the 37th minute. After a foul by Warsaw, Hoffman sent the ensuing direct kick just over the head of Warsaw goalie Katy Cutshall to put the Warriors on the board 1-0. "That was a great direct kick," said Wawasee coach Dodd Cunningham of Hoffman's goal."There was just enough on it to get it past the Warsaw keeper." Hoffman credits the teamwork of the midfield for the success of the team. "Midfield just has to work as a team and we did that," said Hoffman.

Squires Push North Miami But Lose

WABASH - The Manchester Squires looked like a completely different volleyball team than they did two weeks ago. In fact, they surprised many of the spectators at SouthWood High School when they sent the sectional game against North Miami into a third game. However, North Miami outlasted Manchester, 17-15, 9-15, 15-8 and advanced to Saturday's sectional final. Manchester and North Miami battled back and forth for the first five points, but then the Warriors started to pull away. The Squires looked as if they were finished when North Miami built a 13-6 lead, but Manchester refused to give in. The Squires staged a slow but steady comeback, and with a 14-9 Warrior lead, Jessica Hicks stepped up to serve. She led Manchester to five straight Squire points to tie the score at 14.The excitement got to Hicks, however, as she overpowered the sixth serve and sent it wide and long.

Mustangs Fall In Playoff

Kosciusko County Mustangs coach Steve Richardson knew what his football team had to do to beat the Darke County Warriors Saturday. Knowing what to do and doing it were two different things. Unable to stop Darke County's running game, the host Mustangs fell 27-12 in the semifinal round of the Interstate Football League playoffs at Fisher Field. At practice Thursday, Richardson said his team had to stop the Warriors' running game.He was right; his team just couldn't get it done. Darke County ran 55 offensive plays Saturday, 53 of them were rushing attempts.

Goshen Gains Revenge Over Warsaw Netters

ELKHART - Two times this year Warsaw's tennis team faced and beat Goshen, in the regular season dual match and in the NLC Tournament. But when it counted most, Goshen showed it still had Warsaw's number. Goshen, winners of six regional titles in a row, made it seven on Wednesday. The Redskins knocked off the Tigers 3-2 in the Elkhart Central Regional. Warsaw coach Andy Lewis had a bad feeling the day before, when his team sleepwalked through a 4-1 first-round regional win over DeKalb. He voiced unhappiness about his team's carefree approach toward DeKalb and wondered if it would come back and haunt his team against Goshen, a team Warsaw was 0-7 against the last four years until this season. It did. "When we came out flat yesterday (Tuesday), I knew our guys weren't ready to play," Lewis said."We didn't quite get that wakeup call we needed.

Wildcats Fall To Bishop Luers

Luers, which finished their regular season with a 2-7 record, came out of the gates with some heavy intensity and appeared to throw the Wildcats off their game. "We just didn't come out and play with the intensity that Luers did in the first quarter. After that, I believe we started to match them up better," said Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger. Whitko received the opening kickoff and immediately got a first down. Two plays later, Adrien Spenser of Luers intercepted a Casey Boggs pass to give Luers the ball at the Wildcat 45-yard line. Tyquan Hammock punched into the end zone from three yards out.The extra point was no good and the Knights took a 6-0 lead. After a Wildcat three-and-out drive, Hammock scored his second touchdown of the night, a 27-yard run.Quinn Schafer hit Michael Morrison with a pass for the two-point conversion to give the Knights a 14-0 lead.

Warriors Stun Tigers In Sectional Final

One by one, spectators moved to the far tennis court at Warsaw Community High School as the host Tigers took on the underdog Wawasee Warriors. Earlier in the year, the Warriors were manhandled by Warsaw. The Tigers would have no such luck and the doubles play of Ryan Harkleroad and Justin McDowell on the far court propelled Wawasee to just its third sectional crown in 11 years with a 3-2 win.The other eight have been won by Warsaw. Saturday proved that when it comes to the postseason, records are thrown out and it's a brand new season. Warsaw's dyamic duo of Blaine Sumpter and Ray Truman showed why they have a legitimate shot at a state finals appearance with a 6-0, 6-0 waxing of the Warriors' Andrew Custer and Kris Hively, to give the Tigers an early lead. Chris Cavell, playing in just his third singles match all season, struggled at times but handled Warsaw's Mike Chanthalangsy 6-1, 6-3 to tie the match at 1-1.

Harding Cruises Past Wildcats

FORT WAYNE - What had been the source of the Whitko Wildcats' biggest strength all season turned out to be the cause of their downfall in the sectional Friday night. The Wildcats won games this season by taking care of the football. They lost only seven fumbles in their first nine games. They nearly equaled that in one tumultuous evening. The Wildcats lost five fumbles to No.6 (3A) Harding - all in the first half - as they were hammered 55-8 in the second round of the sectional. "We just didn't handle the football," Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger said."We haven't had turnovers all year long.We had five total tonight in the first half.Against a team of this caliber, you can't make those kind of mistakes." Here's how each Whitko possession ended in the first half: punt, fumble, fumble, fumble, punt, fumble. Here's what the Harding offense did with each possession in the first half: touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, fumble, touchdown, touchdown.

If so, then Dr.Norman Jones' book "Growing Up Indiana: The Culture & Hoosier Hysteria Revisited" might be for you. The 70-year-old Jones, who has authored two other books that are not related to high school basketball, played basketball at and graduated from Marion High School in 1954. His book talks about the Golden Era of Hoosier Hysteria and takes a look at the racial prejudice players at some schools had to deal with a half-century ago.

Kari Wortinger Works Magic On Norwood Course

HUNTINGTON - The first time Kari Wortinger played Norwood Golf Course in Huntington, she shot a 90. So no one would blame her if she wasn't too happy when the switch was made this year to move the Huntington Girls Golf Regional from LaFontaine to Norwood. But the way Wortinger is playing, it didn't matter. Wortinger rode a scoring front nine to a final score of 80 (3-over par) and ultimately a trip to the state finals Saturday and Oct.11 at Prestwick Country Club in Avon. Rebecca Rogers of Homestead was medalist with a 79, just one stroke ahead of Wortinger.Warsaw's team finished in seventh place out of eight schools. With her round, Wortinger beat her career-best of 81 shot at Black Squirrel in Goshen.Wortinger shot a 1-under 38 on the front nine and battled through a stretch of five straight bogeys on the back nine to finish with a 42 on the back side and shaved 10 strokes off her previous outing at Norwood.

Warsaw's NLC Hopes Fit To Be Tied

PLYMOUTH - Warsaw's soccer team competed in arguably its biggest game of the season Tuesday evening. The stakes were clear in this game against Plymouth, the team the Tigers were chasing in the Northern Lakes Conference. Win, and the Tigers would share a the Northern Lakes Conference title, with Plymouth. Lose, and they would have to settle for second place. For 78 minutes and 25 seconds, Warsaw outplayed Plymouth to gain a 1-0 lead. With 95 seconds left in the game, the lead, the win and any NLC title hopes slipped away. That was when Plymouth senior Nick Long scored the only Rockie goal, ending the game in a 1-1 tie. For Plymouth, the tie was as good as a win. For Warsaw, the tie might as well have been a loss. The tie gave Plymouth a 5-0-1 record in the conference, while it made Warsaw 4-1-1.Neither team has any NLC games left, so Plymouth owns the title.

Sloppy Vikings Lose Grip On First Place

After blowing a 21-7 fourth-quarter lead at the RCA Dome last Saturday against Oak Hill and losing 28-27 in overtime, Tippecanoe Valley's football team went from looking like a favorite to claim a coveted Three Rivers Conference title to finding itself in a four-way tie for first with Oak Hill, Rochester and Southwood. Friday night's game against Rochester was even bigger than Saturday's game for Tippecanoe Valley.A win, and the Vikings would position themselves for a shot at the conference title; a loss, and they would need some help from other conference foes. With a packed house at Death Valley, the Rochester Zebras took advantage of seven Valley turnovers en route to a big 33-2 TRC win over the host Vikings. The win puts the Zebras (6-1) in a first-place tie with Oak Hill for the lead at 4-1 in the conference.

Redskins' Defense Stifles Tiger Offense

The resurgent Warsaw offense hit another snag Friday. That snag was the Goshen defense. The Redskins held the Tigers to just 135 total yards and returned the favor for Warsaw shutting them out last year, by winning on Fisher Field, 9-0. The shutout loss came on the heels of a 300-yard performance against the Northridge Raiders last Friday by the Tigers, but the performance against Goshen looked more like the previous three games when Warsaw was outscored 105-0 by Tippecanoe Valley, Plymouth and South Bend St.Joe. "Offensively, we were so outmanned up front," Warsaw coach Phil Jensen said."Our kids never quit. This one hurts." On a very rainy night, both offenses had trouble finding the end zone, even though Goshen moved the ball. But the Warsaw defense stiffened when it had to and kept the Redskins from scoring early in the game.

Concord Knocks Warsaw Out Of NLC Race

Thursday's volleyball match with Concord was one reason why Warsaw played in the Mishawaka Invitational, why Warsaw played in some of the best invitationals in the state. The Tigers played in them to prepare for the Northern Lakes Conference. So when Concord entered the Tiger Den sporting a 27-4 record overall and 4-0 record in the NLC, Warsaw coach Jamie Byron wasn't necessarily worried. Yeah, the Tigers were 12-15 overall and 4-1 in the NLC.But Byron compared schedules.

'For Real' Panthers Eye Regional Title

The day Peg Bough knew she had a special volleyball team was Aug.19, 1997. Oh, she always suspected as much heading into the season. But that was the day the coach felt it in her heart of hearts, the day she discovered her hunches were correct. Her team didn't even win.Her NorthWood Panthers bowed to Penn to start 1997 0-1.But Bough liked what she saw on the court. Her players were competitive, but more importantly, they learned something about themselves. "After that our girls said, 'We're for real,'" Bough said."And you know what? After that very first match, I was so excited about our team." Rightfully so, it turns out.The Panthers lost only three more after that match. They won 29.Now they tote that sparkling 29-4 record into the Wawasee Regional, where they will meet Mishawaka Marian (26-9) at 7:30 p.m.Saturday.
