Trojans Shake Off Pesky Dragons

BOURBON - Argos gained a little respect Thursday night from the No.8 Class A volleyball team, the Triton Trojans. The Dragons fought, clawed, battled, and scratched their way to respectability against Triton. But in the end, the Trojans continued on their winning ways with a 15-10, 15-13 victory. "Argos played excellent defense," Triton volleyball coach Gayle Perry said."They are really scrappy. They came in here and they just were not going to let the ball hit the floor. That kind of frustrated us." The first game was a marathon with 41 side-outs.The Trojans quickly jumped ahead 4-0 and seemed to be the dominant team in the matchup, but Argos wouldn't go away. They chipped away at the lead and led Triton 9-7 before the Trojans reasserted themselves and went on for the 15-10 win.Jamey Bell had seven kills in the game and Kendra Blackford had 13 assists.

Front Nine Doesn't Rough Up Wortinger's Game

After three-putting hole No.9 and coming off the green, most onlookers would have thought that Kari Wortinger had just shot the worst round of her career. It looked as if the pressure as the heavy favorite may have been too much for her.Head coach Bill Lantz had trouble getting her to talk to him about the first half of her round. After stepping off of the front nine, she headed straight for hole No.10 before even stopping to talk to anyone. "She was more than mad," Lantz said."She was steaming.Sometimes when you're struggling, you can shoot that score and feel lucky. But her putter left her on the front nine. She had four three-putts." Wortinger's "terrible" score ended up being a 45, tied for the second-best on the front nine. She came back with a 39 on the back nine to shoot an 84, nine strokes better than anyone else at the event.

Warsaw Spikers Take Wawasee

One injury. Two players. Two teams. One outcome. Both Warsaw and Wawasee had a key player who is suffering from a mild back strain. It was just that the Tigers had the depth to overcome Thursday in big Northern Lakes Conference volleyball matchup, 15-7, 15-8, over the Warriors. Maybe it was too much to ask the Warriors to overcome the absence of middle hitter Lydia Carpenter, who is pretty much Wawasee's go-to player this year.Carpenter, who was checked out by the doctors before the match, was in street clothes watching the match. "Doctors thought it would a little too much for her," Wawasee coach Jason Fleming said."She needs to take a break. We have had some tough matches the last week. She was basically off tonight.

Tigers Ease Past Elkhart Central

GOSHEN - You can take the single out of the single-class tournament, but when it comes to volleyball sectionals, you can't separate Warsaw from being champions. The Tigers marched into the first Goshen 4A Volleyball Sectional Saturday and came out with their seventh straight sectional championship, the first in the new multi-class format implemented this year by the IHSAA, with a 15-10, 15-13 win over Elkhart Central. Warsaw had won its previous six sectional titles at Columbia City. Not only is this the first for Warsaw under the new format, but it might be the unlikeliest title the Tigers have had among the previous six.The Tigers (19-14) struggled this year with their youth and came into the championship as the underdogs against the Blue Blazers (23-12). But the Tigers, who lost five starters off last year's semistate team, were pumped for this upset from the start and rode a stingy defensive effort against a high-powered Blazer offense to the win.

Warsaw Wakes Up At Halftime In Win Over Warriors

The challenge for Warsaw's girls soccer team on Saturday may not have been the opponent but the 10 a.m.game time. Warsaw improved to 9-2-4 with a 4-0 home win over 1-11-2 Wawasee. But when halftime arrived, Warsaw held a modest 1-0 lead. The slow start didn't surprise Warsaw coach Brent Wildman. "This was our typical Saturday morning startup," he said."We're slow getting going on Saturday mornings. We came off a very hard game Thursday, and then we followed that with a Saturday morning game." Warsaw finished in a 0-0 tie at Northridge on Thursday. After the slow start, Warsaw finished strong, adding on three second-half goals. Claire Beckett scored two of Warsaw's goals, including the first-half goal on a free kick.Beckett sent the ball into the top of the goal, above the head and arms of Wawasee goalkeeper Casey Rinker.

Tiger Boys Cross Country Team Gets A Taste Of Regional Success

GOSHEN - Hungry for success at the regional level of the state tournament, Jim Mills and his Warsaw's boys cross country team got a taste of it Saturday at Ox Bow Park. Led by senior Ryan Holbrook's 12th-place individual finish, the Tigers cooked up a fifth-place team finish at the Elkhart Regional and advanced to Satuday's New Haven Semistate at IPFW. Mills couldn't remember the last time a Warsaw boys team advanced from the regional, he certainly knows now.

'99 Warsaw Players Attract Division 1-A Interest

In the corner of Warsaw football coach Phil Jensen's office eight VCR tapes are stacked on top of a shelf. If Jensen's primary duty is coaching players and formulating Friday night game plans, these tapes represent a secondary duty: dealing with recruiters. Now Jensen's players, who are 7-1 this season, are wanted by colleges. "That stack of tapes is going out to all the MAC schools with stats and a letter on each kid," he said. Jensen believes three of his senior players - 6-foot-4, 180-pound quarterback Greg Seiss, 6-3, 175-pound wide receiver Ross Kesler and 6-6, 225-pound tight end Zach Nelson - have the potential to play at the Division I-A level. He thinks 6-1, 180-pound senior outside linebacker Aaron Chabot can play at the Division I-AA level.

Kokomo No Match For Third-Ranked Tigers

Forget about calling Warsaw's first-round sectional matchup with Kokomo Friday a cat fight. It was anything but that, as the third-ranked Tigers blasted the Wildcats 62-0 in Class 5A Sectional 3 action. The predicted cat fight will take place next week in Fort Wayne when Warsaw (10-0) battles No.8 Snider. The Panthers, now 9-1, advanced to the second round with a 49-0 win at Huntington North. What appeared to be lopsided on paper was exactly that on the field. If it wasn't Warsaw's offense giving Kokomo fits, it was a stingy Tiger defense. Led by senior tailback Brad Seiss, Warsaw's highly-explosive offense racked up 260 yards on the ground on 38 carries, an average of 6.8 yards per carry. With the arm of junior Ryan DeGeeter, the Tigers also passed for 95 yards. Warsaw's defense gave up but 29 yards on the ground and 65 through the air.

Viking Netters Lasso LaVille

MENTONE - The Tippecanoe Valley Viking tennis team upped its record to 2-0 with a 3-2 Thursday win over LaVille. Eric Love, Valley's No.1 singles player, was the only Viking to win a singles match. He defeated Tony Garrett 7-5, 6-2. Valley's No.1 doubles team of Matt Craig and Brandon Holloway defeated Aaron Krizmanich and T.J.Senff 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.The Viking No.2 doubles team, JayDee Parker and Mike Parker, upped their season record to 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Brian Russell and Jason Menting. Valley blanked LaVille in the junior varsity match.Luke Plank won the No.1 singles match 6-0 over Dustin Schafer.Jeremy Shambaugh won the No.2 singles match 6-3 over Ryan Cox.Bryce Gast won by default. Charlie Manns and Aaron Martin won the only junior varsity match 6-0 in doubles over Tim Conrad and John Costello. Valley, 2-0, hosts 5-0 Triton on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Warriors' Wortinger A Straight Shooter

John Wortinger couldn't believe it.Out on the ninth hole at Maxwelton Golf Club, Kari was doing it wrong again. Kari, his daughter, was golfing on a summer morning, and a shot put her within 20 yards of the green. The club she reached for and used was the pitching wedge. She settled into an open stance, eyed the hole and swung the club. She hit the ball dead right. If only she had listened.John repeatedly told Kari to use a sand wedge, but his stubborn daughter fought him yet again. "I still remember that day," she says."He yelled at me because I would never use my sand wedge.I yelled back. The next day, I started using my sand wedge. From then on, I've had a lot of confidence." She's also had a lot of wins.

Warsaw Kickers Win First Sectional

COLUMBIA CITY - It was halftime when Warsaw soccer coach Corey Rose had an inkling his team would win a sectional championship, and his source of inspiration wasn't even of this earth. "I tell you one thing, at halftime it was 0-0," he said."I looked over and saw the moon.It was orange. For some reason, I felt darn good about that, going into the second half with an orange moon." Maybe the orange moon meant something for the black and orange Warsaw Tigers on Saturday night.More likely it didn't.Still, a Warsaw team with a pedestrian 6-7-4 record surprised 12-4-2 Carroll 2-1, ending the Chargers' three-year reign as Columbia City Sectional champions. Carroll beat Warsaw last year in the semifinals.

Panthers Take Warriors

LIGONIER - Realignment is not for major league baseball only. The NorthWood Panthers know that firsthand. After winning six consecutive Northridge Sectionals in volleyball, the Panthers were shipped to the West Noble Sectional this year, and although the setting changed, the result remained the same as NorthWood beat West Noble in the morning match on Saturday and then knocked off Wawasee in the finals 15-3, 15-11. Wawasee played Angola in the first match of the morning. After winning the first set 15-7, the Warriors fell behind 2-0 in set two. However, Wawasee came back quickly to take a 12-5 lead, but Angola would not go away.Junior Mallory Benson served up four aces in five serves as the Hornets buzzed back to within two points at 12-10.Wawasee readjusted and picked up the final three points for a 15-10 win. Wawasee coach Jason Fleming talked about the emotion his team played with during the opener.

Underdog Warriors Garner Sectional Title

TOPEKA -ÊWawasee entered the Westview boy's soccer sectional final on Saturday night as a decided underdog. The Warriors faced a Northridge team that had lost only two games all season and had already beaten the Warriors earlier in the year. But as the saying goes, "On any given night." Saturday was one of those nights as the Warriors picked up their first boys soccer sectional championship in the nine-year history of the program. It took two 40-minute halves and then two seven-minute overtime periods before the game was ultimately decided in penalty kicks in favor of the Warriors. "I was especially proud of our defense," said Wawasee coach Paul Boyd, "I felt we challenged the ball well and played hard.We maintained good position and played a smart game defensively." Sweeper Ben Champaux, stopper Brent Bokhart and backs A.J.Klaassen and Chris Mock led the defense Boyd spoke of.

For Helfrich, June Has Been Joyous

June 1999 has been good to Craig Helfrich. On June 1, the Warsaw girls softball coach watched his then 18-11 Warsaw softball team beat then 23-5-1 Elkhart Memorial 2-1 in the second round of the sectional. On June 5, Warsaw won its first sectional title since 1995 with a 2-0 win over Concord. The 25-year-old Helfrich is in his second year as Warsaw's softball coach. He says a lot of people tell him he is the youngest coach to win a sectional at Warsaw. On June 12, 20-11 Warsaw will play 12-17 Huntington North in the second game of the Columbia City 3A Regional."No one expected us to be here," Helfrich said."Everyone thought Elkhart Memorial would be here." On June 26, he gets married. Yes, he planned his wedding around the softball tournament. The state finals take place June 18-19. "This is a big month," he said."It's hard to believe.I made sure nothing is interfering on the June 26 date." In a lot of ways, 12-17 Huntington North is like Warsaw.

Triton Tennis Team Downs Rochester 4-1

BOURBON - As the old saying goes, "What goes around comes around." Tuesday night Triton's boys tennis team hosted Tippecanoe Valley, a 3A school from the Three Rivers Conference, and lost the match 4-1.Art Blackmer picked up the lone win for the smaller school Trojans. Wednesday night Triton hosted Rochester, a school of the same size and conference as Valley, but reversed the outcome of the night before and topped the Zebras 4-1. "It was a tough loss to Valley the night before," said Triton coach Janet Beam."The kids wanted it but not bad enough. We had a long weekend because of Labor Day, but the kids came back much better against Rochester." Blackmer, Triton's No.1 singles player, turned in the first score of the evening Wednesday, a 6-1, 6-0 win over Andy Jansing. Beam said she has a lot of faith in Blackmer, and being the lone senior on the team, he is the obvious leader.Blackmer beat Valley's Drew Shafer 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday.

Vikings Come Alive In Fourth To Secure Homecoming Win

AKRON -ÊComing into Friday's Three Rivers Conference clash with Oak Hill, Tippecanoe Valley coach Scott Bibler didn't quite know how his football team would respond. For instance, this was homecoming week for the Vikings, and it turned out to be a very hectic, strange week for the Vikings. "It has been a frustrating week, probably our worst week of practice," Bibler said."We had so many activities interfere with our normal practice time, it was so crazy." After getting off to a shaky start, the Vikings pleased the home crowd and pulled out an important 26-6 TRC win against Oak Hill. "With homecoming, there is just so much hoopla,' Bibler said."We just weren't as focused as we usually are." Homecoming started out with a bang for the Vikings.

Fawcett, Barrett Keep Squires Rolling

DENVER - If it's possible to upstage David Barrett, the third leading rusher in the state, Steve Fawcett did it Friday. Fawcett was all over the field on defense, racking up an amazing 25 tackles as Manchester won a battle of undefeated conference teams with a 35-14 win over North Miami. Fawcett's defensive effort downplayed Barrett's third consecutive 200-yard rushing game. His 259 yards were actually his worst single game total in three weeks. North Miami held an 8-6 lead in the second quarter, but Barrett and Groombridge had back-to-back touchdowns as the Squires went ahead 21-8 at the half. Barrett scored his third touchdown of the game in the third quarter to nail down the win for Manchester. Barrett, who also happens to have the third-most carries in the state along with being the third leading rusher in the state, had 33 more carries Friday to give him 161 on the year to go along with 1,159 yards rushing.
