Goshen Has Warsaw's Number

Head-to-head, Goshen had Warsaw's number Wednesday. But Tiger coach Andy Lewis thinks things could be different at this weekend's Northern Lakes Conference tournament. Despite the 3-2 loss to the always-tough Redskins, it was an effort that shows promise for a young Tiger squad. "We lost seven seniors last year, and we still went 3-2 with Goshen," Lewis said."I am so proud of these kids.We only have one kid from last year that played varsity, and that was (No.1 singles) Craig (Harman). The rest of them had no varsity matches before this year, and to lay it all on the line, and to take them 3-2 showed you what kind of character this team has." The win improved Goshen's NLC mark to a perfect 6-0 this year, while Warsaw fell to 4-2.With NorthWood (5-1) also in the fray, Lewis said that the more teams involved could help Warsaw to the NLC tourney title and a share of the NLC championship.

Hepler To Appear On Reality TV Show

WINONA LAKE - As Denny Hepler put it, the pressure was like trying to hit a shot on the last hole to win a championship. Fortunately, Hepler, the owner and club pro at Raccoon Run Golf Course, has already done that, having won the 1982 Malaysian Open in a playoff situation. Being comfortable in front of a television camera didn't hurt either. Hepler, a Warsaw Community High School and Florida State University graduate, spent two weeks in California this summer filming for the reality TV show Big Break VI: Trump National. The show, which will air once a week in one-hour episodes, begins airing Tuesday at 10 p.m.on the Golf Channel. The concept of the show, which is the Golf Channel's most popular reality show, is simple. The show features nine men and nine women competing for a chance to be on the PGA's Champions Tour or the LPGA Tour at Trump National Golf Course in Los Angeles. Winning the sixth season of Big Break, however, isn't so simple.

Parker Plays His Roles Perfectly

It takes a rare individual to be athletic enough to play football, basketball and golf at a varsity level in high school. It takes something else completely to also be valedictorian of the senior class and involved in National Honor Society, Kosciusko Endowment Youth Services, Spanish Club, student government, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Varsity Club. Tippecanoe Valley graduate Darren Parker is anything but the average teenager. As point guard for the basketball team, he engineered Valley's first sectional title since 1988.His stats did not show what he meant to the team on the floor.

College Roundup

NORTH MANCHESTER - Grace College's men's tennis team got back to .500 with a 6-1 victory at Manchester Saturday. The Lancers won four singles matches and two doubles matches before the rains came.Grace is 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Mid-Central Conference and will host Huntington today at 2 p.m.

Squires Tennis Team Downs Valley 5-0

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊWhere Manchester's boys tennis team is now, Tippecanoe Valley plans to be next year. That is, the top team in the Three Rivers Conference. That is, sporting a solid lineup that not only beats poor teams but good ones, as well. But for now, Manchester still rules the TRC, and Thursday the Squires ruled Valley 5-0. Manchester improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the TRC, while Valley dropped to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in the TRC.Manchester's two losses have come to No.13 Carroll (Allen) and 14-0 Bluffton. The two teams met Sept.11 in the TRC Tournament at Tippecanoe Valley; Manchester finished first with 19 points, and Valley took second with 15 points. Manchester may have won 5-0 Thursday, but to hear Manchester coach Eric Christiansen talk, the Squires were lucky to win.

Warrior Golfers Hope To Earn Return Trip To State

SYRACUSE - Last year, the Wawasee golf team advanced to the state competition. With four of the five Warrior golfers returning this season, what did Coach Don Deck tell them when this season started? "I told them, 'Let's do it again,'" said Deck."They thought that was a pretty good idea." The Warriors moved one step closer to that goal after last week's Warsaw Sectional when they placed second to advance to the Homestead Regional held at Chestnut Hills Friday. However, the Wawasee squad will not have an easy time as they face some of the toughest teams in the area at the regional. One of those teams is Warsaw, a thorn in Wawasee's side all season. "Let's get this out of the way early, Warsaw is a wonderful team," said Deck."We have played against them three times this year and they have placed above us all three times. They have a couple of real good freshmen, and they are tough this year.

Grace's Miller Field Getting Facelift

WINONA LAKE - Grace College's Miller Field is going through a major face-lift over the next few months. The 65-1/2 acre sports facility is in the midst of a massive overhaul that includes three phases. Since 1970, when Miller Field was first constructed, the area to the left of Pierceton Road in Winona Lake heading away from the college has remained virtually the same. But the addition of a track, tennis courts, another soccer field, a second parking lot and the paving of the old one will make for a larger and more aesthetically pleasing sports facility. However, the renovations that are in store will involve more paving than just that of the parking lots.It also paves the way for a new gym to be built in the near future.

Tiger Defense Shines Under Dark Skies In Goshen

GOSHEN - On a rain soaked field under dark skies, Warsaw's defense shined and left Northern Lakes Conference rival Goshen in a drought Friday. An evening that saw two 50-minute weather delays for heavy rains and lightning, the skies weren't the only thing filled with electricity as the Tigers made their lenghty stay in the Maple City a sweet one, pancaking the host Redskins 35-0. "Several times we thought we were gonna play tommorrow," said Tiger assistant coach Tony Boley, filling in for head coach Phil Jensen who left immediately after the game to be with family following the death of his uncle."Number one was the safety of the kids.We were about ready to get on the bus, we waited long enough and I'm glad we got it in." So were the few Warsaw fans in attendance, who were treated to a defensive gem. A unit that Boley described as making a name for itself, the Tiger defense became well known Friday, making itself right at home and dominating Goshen's homecoming.

Tiger Spikers Drop First Match Of Season

What at first seemed like a match destined for five games turned into a rout as Elkhart Memorial dispatched host Warsaw 25-23, 25-15, 25-11 in volleyball action Thursday night. The Tigers were aggressive and remained in system during the first game despite being unable to string together more than three points at a time. Senior Tasia Smith served the Tigers into a 19-19 tie before the Crimson Chargers went on a 4-1 run to reach 23. Warsaw rallied to trail 24-23 when Elkhart Memorial coach Jacquie Rost called a timeout.Tiger senior Kristin Conley's service error ended the first match with Elkhart Memorial escaping 25-23. The Chargers went on a 9-1 run midway through the second game that essentially put the game away early. Smith scored two straight points for the Tigers after Elkhart Memorial's run.The second of which was a thunderous spike that for a moment seemed to ignite the Tigers.

Panther Hitters Smash Tigers' Streak

Seven long years NorthWood waited for this, and head coach Bough forced herself to believe it really had happened. "Finally," she said, "Finally." The streak is over. Not Cal Ripken's consecutive games played streak. He's still clipping along at 2,478 and counting entering next year. No, but one of the most impressive streaks strung together by a local team fell last night.Warsaw's volleyball team lost to NorthWood 15-9, 13-15, 15-2, ending the Tigers' seven-year reign of either winning or sharing the Northern Lakes Conference title. NorthWood improved to 20-2 overall and 5-0 in the NLC, while Warsaw dropped to 12-13 and 3-2.NorthWood has one conference match left, at Wawasee (16-13, 2-3 NLC) on Thursday.Every other NLC team has at least one loss.

Warriors Fall To Falcons

DUNLAP -ÊGoing into the Concord Tennis Regional, the Wawasee Warriors knew they were the underdogs. After all, the Warriors had to play a tough Fairfield team that was 20-0 and playing with a mission.Earlier this week, two Fairfield students were killed in two separate accidents, and that was never far from the Fairfield players' minds. The Falcon tennis team sported the initials of one of those classmates on their uniform sleeve as they defeated the Wawasee squad 5-0 in straight sets. "Even though they beat us 5-0 tonight," said Wawasee coach Roger Brady, "I think we played much better agaist them than we did earlier in the season. Our matches were longer and we were more competitive. We made some good points, and we were more ready for them. "But they were also ready for us.They knew we would prepare for them and be ready to play." Fairfield's first individual win came at the No.1 singles position where Steve Huber downed Wawasee's Evan Gerard 6-2, 6-2.

Warsaw's Title Chase Hits Snag

Warsaw got a little distracted during its trek to the first Northern Lakes Conference girls soccer title. The distraction was in the form of an early apparent goal by Jenna Rooney that was disallowed. The result was a little lost focus and a 1-0 loss to Northridge at the CCAC Thursday. Despite suffering their first loss of the season to Mishawaka Marian coming into the game, the Tigers (9-2-3) were still in control of the NLC and could have virtually wrapped up the first conference title with a win over the Raiders. Five minutes into the contest, Bobbi Wildman hit a header in front of the net, and Rooney apparently converted the pass into an early goal. But the officials ruled that the ball had crossed over the endline earlier in the play and thus was ruled out of bounds - no goal.

Bulls Haven't Won Anything, Yet

Bulls fans, here's a news flash.Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and company aren't out of the woods yet. This series is far from over. Sure, no team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit. But on the same hand, the chances are almost as slim that a team could lose Game 1 and still win the series. However, the Bulls look like a decent bet to beat those odds. Tonight's Game 5 is as important a game for the Bulls as any this year, including Game 7 against Indiana. If the Bulls lose to Utah tonight, Chicago's in a bad position. And here's my reasoning as to why Chicago could lose tonight and then go on to drop the series. First, the Bulls have been known to let teams off the hook.Remember the Finals a couple years ago against Seattle.Chicago led 3-0 before handing the Supersonics two wins.Last year, Chicago led 2-0 before dropping the next two games to the Jazz. The Bulls led the Pacers 3-2 before Indiana knotted up the series.

Tigers Solve Redskins' Riddle

GOSHEN - After seven matches and four years of futility, of course the tennis match came down to this. One ball brushing over the top of the net for one point. That's what it came down to. Thanks to that crucial point by singles player Peter Anders, the Warsaw Tigers beat Goshen 3-2 on Wednesday to stop their 0-7 skid the last four years against the Redskins. It's not the shoes, it's the clothes. "Seven times in a row we had lost, but this is the first time where we came in as the favored team," Warsaw coach Andy Lewis said."I wore jeans.I never wear jeans.I have one pair and wore them today.I thought I'd try something different." He wasn't the only one who changed.Assistant coach Tim Haines, who "never wears ties" to matches, wore a tie for the first time.

Spartans Going Where They Have Never Been

The Manchester College football team has the opportunity to do something on Saturday that no other Spartan football squad has done before - start the season 4-0. Spartan coach Dave Harms has led his team to a 3-0 record, the first time Manchester has started that well since 1968. However, standing in the way of the record is the only other undefeated team in the conference, No.20 (NCAA, Div.III) Hanover College.Hanover has started the year 4-0 and both teams will be playing their conference openers on Saturday. It will be a key game in getting a leg up on the conference. For Manchester, this is new ground. The Spartans went 4-6 last year, 2-4 in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference.Manchester has not ended a season above .500 since 1987 and has never won the ICAC, which began in 1989.

Improvement Keeps Whitko Golf Team Positive

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊMany teams that have not won a contest all season get down on themselves. They give up. That's not true for the Whitko girls golf team. This year's Wildcats exemplify something more important than winning - attitude.Coach Jennifer Frieden has something to do with that. While many 0-15 coaches would be disappointed with the season and hesitant to talk about it, Frieden happily talks about her team. "I think the girls are starting to realize that golf can be fun, especially when you start to get better," said Frieden."These girls have made great strides this season. "When we started this year, almost all the girls were shooting 70s, some were even in the 90s.Now they are all in the 60s.I am thrilled with the way this team has progressed.

Tigers Look For State CC Trip

It had been more than half a decade before the Warsaw girls cross country team advanced to the semistate round of the state tournament last year.Saturday the Tigers, among other local teams, will find out just how far they can go this year when they compete in the 9 a.m.sectional at Oxbox Park in Dunlap. Thursday evening Warsaw coach Paul Sibray, in his 10th year of coaching cross country, was asked to compare this year's team to last year's.

Manchester, Warsaw Golfers Compete In Saturday Golf Regionals

Two area teams, same common goal -Êmake it to the girls golf state finals. Manchester's team (12-9) made history last week after advancing to the regional for the first time in school history. But it was not an easy task for the Squires. After the first nine holes at the sectional (also at Norwood Golf Course in Huntington), Manchester sat in fourth place behind Huntington North, Marion and Peru.Marion held an 18-stroke lead, while Huntington North and Peru were 13 and eight shots up, respectively.Wabash, Maconaquah and Blackford County were right nipping at Manchester's heels. However, on the back nine, Manchester shot its best nine holes of golf of the season, a 185.Three of Manchester's four counted scores were under 50; their fourth score was a 51.The Squires' 185 bested all other teams by 11 strokes and slid into second place to advance to the regional. It was the only time in school history the Squires have moved on from the sectional.

Tiger Soccer Team Slides Into Sectional Finals

COLUMBIA CITY - Dominate. That's the word that would describe the Warsaw girls soccer team's performance Wednesday against Fort Wayne Elmhurst. When all was said and done, the Tigers came out on top, 9-0.No, that's not a misprint, and yes, that's a soccer score. "It's difficult to play the middle game of a series," said Warsaw coach Brent Wildman."We came off a tough game against Columbia City, and we didn't know this team." With 31:15 left in the first half, Frankie Vanderpool scored Warsaw's first goal of the game.Just under four minutes later, Lindsay Bruick passed the ball to Kari Wildman, who kicked it in for the second goal of the game. Warsaw was then up 3-0 with 14:13 left in the first half after Holly McGriff passed the ball to Kathryn Masur for another Tiger goal. "We came out to win and develop a strategy for our next game," said Wildman.
