Liberal Angst Isn't Selling For Air America

The New York Post reported this week that all-liberal, all-the-time radio network Air America is fixing to file for bankruptcy. The network denies the report, but I must say I wasn't the least bit shocked when I read it. Frankly, I was surprised the network has survived this long. Air America Radio, billing itself as a "full-service, progressive talk radio network," went on the air March 31, 2004. At the time, I gave it a year. See, I'm just not sure that kind of blather plays all that well, even in big, blue markets - the only markets that carried Air America. Apparently, most liberals don't ascribe to acerbic nonsense no matter how far left it leans. This does not seem to apply to conservatives, however, because no matter how acerbic Rush Limbaugh is, he still gets ratings. In fact, there are several popular conservative barking heads out there.

WCS Names Interim Superintendent

Six to one, the Warsaw Community School Board voted Tuesday night to offer the interim superintendent job to Ralph J.Bailey, Columbia City. As part of the motion made by board member Dan Robinson, board members Robinson, Tammy Dalton and Ron Yeiter will negotiate the terms of the contract with Bailey. Board member Cathy Folk said she voted "no" because she did not get to meet any of the candidates in a board session. Later in the meeting, board member Chuck Sauders said he knows Bailey and worked with him previously."He's a very competent and nice person," he said. However, Sauders said he was hesitant to vote "yes" on Bailey because of the rate of pay he receives as interim superintendent.

Fighting Drugs

Editor's Note: The following is the first of two articles looking at the local drug task force.Monday's article looks at opinions about the task force from seven candidates running for sheriff. The number of felony drug arrests in Kosciusko County - many of which have historically come through the local drug task force - has declined in the past two years. Part of the decrease, according to people familiar with local law enforcement, is tied to problems within the drug task force. In 1995, the county filed 81 felony drug charges, but saw that figure decrease to 48 in 1996 and 52 in 1997, according to statistics from the prosecutor's office. In past years, most of the work by the task force culminated in high-profile drug sweeps in which officers with dozens of warrants fanned across the county in night-time drug raids. Those operations have nearly ceased.Three raids in the first half of 1997 resulted in just 14 arrests.
