Neither Injuries Nor Shortcuts Keep Warsaw From Winning

In its girls cross country meet with Northern Lakes Conference rivals NorthWood and Concord at home Tuesday afternoon, Warsaw had to overcome a few obstacles to win. For starters, junior Hilary Barlow ran last night's meet with injuries.Add to that two of Warsaw's runners were disqualified for taking a short cut. In the end this wasn't enough to slow the Tigers down as they beat NorthWood 18-38 and topped Concord 15-47.NorthWood edged Concord 16-45. "The girls seemed to run real strong," said Warsaw coach Paul Sibray."We had four girls right up front." Barlow won the race with a time of 15:29.

Leach Leads Warriors Past NorthWood

SYRACUSE - Veteran NorthWood High School football coach Rich Dodson spent little time answering the question. Having seen what Wawasee quarterback Joe Leach did to the Panthers Friday night was probably enough as it was, let alone talking about it. Following Wawasee's 40-29 win over his Panthers, Dodson was asked what Leach meant to the Warriors. Dodson responded, "He's their heartbeat, that's all I got to say." Leach certainly was Wawasee's heartbeat Friday night, leading the Warriors to their fourth win over NorthWood in five years. All the 6-foot-3, 175-pound senior signal caller did was carry the ball 23 times for 207 yards and complete 14 of 21 passes for 183 yards. Leach scored touchdowns on runs of 29 and 54 yards. He also threw an 85-yard touchdown pass to classmate Andrew Mock and a 24-yard scoring strike to junior Brandon Geiger.

Zolman Home Again In Hoosier State

SYRACUSE -ÊIt's easy to forget sometimes that professional athletes exsist outside the courts and fields where they make their livings. Wawasee legend, University of Tennesse alum and current member of the WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars Shanna Zolman is a perfect example. Zolman, who spent some time at the McDonald's in Syracuse late Monday afternoon signing autographs, is home until October. And while she has a few speaking arrangements lined up here and there, Zolman isn't home for a series of parades, public appearances and autograph sessions. Zolman's home to see family and friends. She's also got a wedding to plan. Zolman will marry Andrew Crossley Oct.14. Zolman just completed her rookie year as a member of the Silver Stars and found her time at Tennesse to be invaluable in getting ready for professional play.

Great Scott! Botched Play Helps Tigers Win

Most coaches hate to hear the term "shoot themselves in the foot", but that's exactly what happened to the Plymouth Rockies Friday night in their Northern Lakes Conference opener with Warsaw. With help from No.7 (4A) Plymouth, Warsaw beat the Rockies 14-13. With the Tigers leading 14-7, Plymouth quarterback John Pettibone connected on a 60-yard touchdown strike to senior Mike Scott who, with no defender within nearly 20 yards, dove in from the 2-yard line and was whistled with an excessive-celebration penalty.Plymouth then had to settle for a near 25-yard extra-point attempt that was blocked by Warsaw's defense, leaving the Tigers in control 14-13 rather than tying the score. Scott's mishap came with 1:43 remaining in the second half. And the score was the same when the final seconds ticked off the clock. The win improves Warsaw's overall record to 3-0, but more importantly 1-0 in the NLC.Plymouth falls to 2-1 and 0-1 in the NLC.

Squires Stay On Top In TRC Tourney

AKRON -ÊMaybe the name should be switched from the Three Rivers Conference Tournament to the Manchester Tournament. After all, the Manchester Squires own it. Machester's boys tennis team maintained its dominance of the TRC Tournament by finishing first Saturday with 19 points. The tournament began in 1988; Manchester has won every year but two, 1993 and 1997.The Squires tied Valley for first in 1997. Out of five championship matches, Manchester won four. Valley took second with 15 points and was followed by Rochester with nine and Whitko with four. The tournament went as expected.Manchester was considered the favorite, with Valley close behind. The Squires, 5-2, had four seniors.Valley, 8-2, had one senior. "For the most part, we knew Manchester was the team to beat," Valley coach Rod Hamman said. "Valley was the one team we had to look out for," Manchester coach Eric Christiansen said.

Wawasee Wins NLC Thriller

PLYMOUTH - Had Wawasee's and Plymouth's offenses been any different, the Rockies would have worn leather helmets. Friday night's Northern Lakes Conference battle pitted the Warriors' high-octane offense against Plymouth's old school grind-it-out ground attack. The game, however, came down to the red shoes of Wawasee kicker John Miller. Miller, a soccer player who was questionable for the game after sustaining a leg injury during a soccer match this week, stared down a 25-yard field goal attempt with 8.9 seconds left. The senior kicker with the bright red football cleats split the uprights to give Wawasee a 31-29 win over No.7 (4A) Plymouth, the Rockies' first loss of the year. Plymouth coach John Baron made a gutsy call after Brett Corbett's four-yard touchdown with 1:25 left in the game brought the Rockies to within one point at 28-27.

Wawasee Boys, Warsaw Girls Win Cross Country Meet

SYRACUSE - Warsaw boys cross country coach Jim Mills isn't in the business of sugar coating things. When asked how he thought his team ran Tuesday against Northern Lakes Conference foes Concord and host Wawasee, he was blunt. "We ran pretty mediocre," said Mills."Every year we come over here and run poorly. There's something about coming to Wawasee." The Warriors coasted to a 19-40 win over Warsaw and a 15-47 win over the Minutemen in rainy and muddy conditions at Wawasee High School. The Tigers topped the Minutemen 19-36. In girls action, Warsaw beat Concord 22-35 and Wawasee 19-40.The Minutemen edged Wawasee 25-30. For the boys, the race was dominated by Wawasee's Ryan Smythe.Smythe jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. While the rest of the Warriors ran in a solid pack, Smythe distanced himself from his teammates and all the Tigers. Warsaw's Matt Campbell finished second, more than 40 seconds behind Smythe with a time of 16:54.

Wesleyan Whacks Grace Spikers

WINONA LAKE - Home sweet home. Whatever. Don't tell that to the Grace College volleyball team as the Lancers opened Mid-Central Conference action with a loss in their home opener Tuesday, after 14 straight matches on the road to start the year. Indiana Wesleyan rolled through Grace, winning in straight sets, 15-10, 15-13, 15-10. For the Lancers, it was the lack of experience and a senior-laden team that cost them.Grace was tied 10-10 in the first set and 13-13 in the second set but couldn't put those matches away. Grace head coach Candace Moats couldn't help but look back on what would have happened if last year's setter and the No.2 career assist leader in NAIA history, Melissa Rants, were still around.

Warsaw Falls At Goshen

GOSHEN - Second-year Warsaw football coach Troy Akers said he believes teams play like they practice. Unfortunately for he and his staff, that's what the Tigers did Friday night against Northern Lakes Conference opponent Goshen, falling 14-7 at Foreman Field on the Redskins' homecoming night. Following what Akers described as a bad week of practice, Warsaw, other than the first drive of the game, was anything but sharp Friday night.

Officially Speaking

I had several people ask me what the circumstances were surrounding the postponement of Tippecanoe Valley's football game against Southwood Sept.9.The officiating crew didn't show up for the game and it was moved to Saturday night with a new set of officials. The old crew disbanded and failed to inform Valley athletic director Duane Burkhart. How does that happen? I came to find out that most officials sign contracts to do football or basketball games up to five years in advance.Schools want to get the best refs they can so they sign them up as early as possible. Over time, some officials retire or quit and most often the school is given enough notice and they move on to get another official. There is a website schools can access which shows a list of licensed officials and can find replacements. That, however, isn't foolproof because there are some refs who continue to renew their license but have stopped doing games according to IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress.

MIDDLEBURY - The Wawasee Warriors got back on the winning track when they defeated Northern Lakes Conference opponent Northridge 14-7 Friday in Middlebury. The Warriors jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter when Logan Lees ran 16 yards for the first Wawasee touchdown. Wawasee struck again in the second when Lees scored a 22-yard touchdown to put the Warriors up 14-0. Wawasee is now 2-1 and 1-0 in the NLC while Northridge falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the NLC.

Whitko Stops Manchester

SOUTH WHITLEY - Friday night's Whitko versus Manchester game was a game full of story lines. First, there was the return of two people to the field.Whitko head coach Bryan Sprunger returned to the sidelines after a one-game absence because of the death of his mother. On the other side, the Squires finally got their starting quarterback, Rex Reimer, on the field after a suspension that forced him to miss the opening two games of the season. For both returners, it was success of a sort.Sprunger's team picked up the 27-12 win even though he wasn't exuberant over the play of his team.Reimer looked sharp in the first half completing 7 of 9 passes for 93 yards and looked confident leading the Manchester offense. However, in the second half, he was just 3 for 13.

Host Tigers Upend LCA In Soccer Invite

It took the Tigers two overtimes and penalty kicks just to advance to the final of its Warsaw Invitational Saturday. Warsaw played to a 0-0 tie with Carroll in the first match of the day before winning in a shootout. The Tigers, who had less then an hour's rest after the Carroll match, saved the dramatics in the championship against LCA, winning 4-0. LCA disposed of Andrean in the opening round, 3-2.Bemba Sylla scored two goals to lead the Cougars. Andrean jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Andy Masteller scored the first of his two goals in the ninth minute.Charles Lee found Sylla in the 22nd minute to tie the score at 1-1.Sylla put the Cougars in the lead in the 39th minute with a penalty kick. After Masteller's second goal, Craig Wilson broke free and broke the tie in the 77th minute to advance Lakeland to the championship game.

Dome Day Massacre

INDIANAPOLIS - The Northern Lakes Conference Day at the Dome turned into a shoot-out affair, with three lopsided victories and one game that came down to the wire. Plymouth opened the day with a 42-0 win over Northridge, and that was followed by a 37-7 Concord win over Wawasee. The third game of the day was another blowout as Goshen handled NorthWood surprisingly easy with a 30-7 win. Finally, the last game of the day saw South Bend St.Joe escape the Dome with a hard-fought 31-23 win over the Warsaw Tigers. South Bend St.Joe 31 Warsaw 23 Turnovers can be heartbreaking. The Warsaw Tigers understand that ever-so-much-more now.The Tigers had two costly first half turnovers and another major mistake that gave South Bend St.Joe easy opportunities to score at the RCA Dome Saturday. Even though Warsaw fought back from a big hole, the Indians were just given too many chances and won 31-23.

Goshen Golfers Tie Up Tigers

GOSHEN - When Goshen won the Northern Lakes Conference last year, the Redskins did so with the help of the best golfer in the area, Inga Snyder. She was so good, she automatically made Goshen better than teams in most matches. But Snyder can't help Goshen this year. She plays golf for Indiana University now. The Redskins hosted Warsaw at Maplecrest Country Club in a Tuesday match. The match pitted 12-1 Goshen against 10-1 Warsaw. Both owned undefeated records in the Northern Lakes Conference. The winner would take control in the race for the NLC title. Turns out Goshen didn't need Snyder. The 48 by Goshen's fourth golfer, Megan Thomas, was better than any of Warsaw's scores. The Redskins ambushed Warsaw 183-207. Struggling at Maplecrest against Goshen is nothing new to Warsaw coach Bob Turner.

Warsaw Splits Its Two Quarters

MISHAWAKA - If attitude and enthusiasm count for anything, the Warsaw Tigers are way ahead of the game after their showing in the Mishawaka Football Jamboree Friday at Steele Field. After a slow start in its opening quarter against defending 5A state champion Penn, the Tigers began to heed the advice of their first-year coach Phil Jensen. "Enthusiasm and attitude is what I saw that I liked," Jensen said."We are not there yet, we have a long way to go, but we had some real positive things. "You have to have attitude, you have to have belief and you have to have team before anything else matters," he said."We are starting to move ahead in that direction." Warsaw opened up against the Kingsmen in the second quarter and immediately found themselves with their backs to the collective wall. And when Penn's Ricky Siri got behind the Tiger defensive secondary only seven plays into the quarter, Warsaw found itself down 6-0 and down even further emotionally.

Plymouth Rushing Attack Grounds Tigers

PLYMOUTH - First-year Warsaw football coach Troy Akers likened it to an old fashion alley fight, and his Tigers were backed into a corner from the start. Using a power running game that simply dominated the Tiger defense, Plymouth opened up Northern Lakes Conference play with a 24-17 win over visiting Warsaw. After manhandling finesse offenses from Columbia City and Homestead for 42 tackles for loss in the first two games, the Tiger defense ran into a Plymouth offense Friday that was hardly fancy. All the Rockies did was beat Warsaw off the ball play after play, and with open holes to run through, thanks to strong offensive line play, Plymouth amassed 296 rushing yards on 60 carries.
