Warsaw Boys Rally For Win At Elkhart Central

ELKHART - Playing major minutes on the varsity boys basketball team for the first time in his brief high school career, Warsaw Community High School sophomore Jesse Sharp lived up to his last name Saturday night. Moving up to the varsity level because of an injury to starting senior point guard Ben Truman, Sharp came off the bench and scored nine points for the Tigers, who rallied from a 15-point deficit at halftime to beat host Elkhart Central 64-56 in overtime at historic North Side Gym. Sharp hit a three-pointer to knot the game at 50-all with six seconds left in regulation, and the Tigers went on to outscore the Blue Blazers 14-6 in the four-minute overtime session. "Jesse Sharp has a knack for hitting big shots," said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team improved to 6-3 on the season. Ogle went on to point out that Sharp's shot came a year after he hit a three-quarter lenght shot to send the freshman game against Penn into overtime.

Wienhorst Wins 400th, Tigers Manhandle Columbia City

COLUMBIA CITY - Nothing short of a great rivalry over the years, Warsaw's girls basketball game with Columbia City Tuesday was more like an unwanted meeting with the playground bully. Warsaw, currently ranked No.8 in 4A, simply manhandled the host Eagles and Will Wienhorst's 400th career victory was never in doubt as the hot-handed Tigers cruised to a 68-33 win. In his 25th year of coaching, Wienhorst now owns a career mark of 400-132 (75.2 percent). In his 18th year directing the Tigers he boasts a 296-91 (76.5 percent) record.

Rhodes Collects 300th Victory

When looking back, it might never have been at Warsaw for Al Rhodes. If fate hadn't been on his side, he probably wouldn't have been able to celebrate his 300th win as the boys' basketball coach of the Tigers. About 16 years ago when Warsaw was looking for a coach to replace Jim Miller, who had just moved onto Huntington, school officials looked at Rhodes, but he wasn't there first choice. He might not have even been there second choice. But as it turned out, Rhodes, then a Tiger assistant coach, got the head coaching position and two games into his 17th season at Warsaw, he upped his coaching record to 300-100 with a thrilling 63-62 win over Kosciusko County rival Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday at the Tiger Den.

Tiger Spikers Fall In Sectional Championship

KENDALLVILLE - A sport in which momentum is key, DeKalb's varsity volleyball team stole it from Warsaw Saturday night, and then the Barons made off with the sectional championship. The best-of-five series knotted at one game each in the championship match of the East Noble Sectional, DeKalb trailed the Tigers 18-15 but scored the game's final six points with sophomore Rachelle Grogg serving. That turnaround went a long way in DeKalb edging Warsaw 21-16, 15-21, 21-18, 21-19. Asked the difference in the game, Warsaw coach Doug West sat down, spoke very softly.

Plymouth Drops Whitko To 0-6

SOUTH WHITLEY - The famous saying goes, "Don't count your chickens before they're hatched." That is exactly what happened during Saturday night's game. The Plymouth Pilgrims boasted a 4-0 overall record and figured on an easy win over the struggling 0-5 Whitko Wildcats. But the struggle laid in their own laps as the Wildcats pushed above and beyond what they had thought and gave Plymouth an early season eye-opener. But as the final seconds ticked off the clock, it was the Pilgrims who left with a close win over their hosts, beating Whitko 62-53. "I am extremely proud of my team," said Whitko coach Steve Pickett."This is the best we have played all year." Whitko came in pumped up and owned the early lead as starting forward Ben Ryan nailed the first two field goals of the game.Ryan made 73 percent of his shots en route to a season-high 18 points. He also pulled down eight rebounds.

Tigers Survive 3-Point Barrage

It was certainly a battle of different styles Saturday in the championship game of the Warsaw Holiday Tourney at the Tiger Den. The challengers from South Bend Washington were dropping three-pointers on the outside like scud missiles, while the host Warsaw team took the inside route, pounding the ball in the paint and making frequent trips to the charity stripe. The frees won over the threes. Warsaw's 28-6 advantage at the free-throw line helped offset the Panthers' 15 treys as the Tigers won their fourth straight holiday tourney title, their second straight over the Panthers, 86-77. It was just a matter of the two teams preferring different lines.Warsaw liked the one 15 feet away, while the Panthers went 4 feet (or even further) back. The Tigers went to the free-throw line 36 times compared to just 10 for the Panthers, but Washington kept pace by hitting 15 of 28 from beyond the arc.

Penn Wins In A Pinch

MISHAWAKA - Afterward there were the expected tears from his players, and then football coach Phil Jensen took a few seconds to shake off his emotions. Though its only loss of the regular season came in overtime to then No.5-ranked Homestead, Warsaw went through the season unranked and was written off by many against Penn. The Tigers, led by 21 seniors who won three games combined at Warsaw's two middle schools, took the Kingsmen to the wire on their turf before senior Matt Nagy's 28-yard field goal with two seconds left gave Penn a 10-7 win Friday. Warsaw finishes its season at 9-2, a win total the Tigers haven't had since 1982; Penn, winners of three of the last five state championships, improves to 10-1 and will play at Mishawaka (8-3) Friday for the sectional championship.Mishawaka topped Michigan City 34-15.

NorthWood Gets Past East Noble

NAPPANEE - Getting a late start on the season, NorthWood fought East Noble through four quarters to pull off their first home victory of the year by defeating East Noble 49-41. Compared to East Noble's record of 25-2 last year, this year's team is said to be one of Knights coach Marty Johnson's most inexperienced teams in years. "We were right with them through three quarters, but some of our best players became spectators at the end," Johnson later said."But we're a young team and we're improving. That's what I care about." Jumping off to a slow start in the first quarter, the Panthers gave up three three-point shots to Zach Lear of East Noble. But NorthWood came back, with Bobby Brown scoring 19 points and Aaron Huber scoring 13. "The whole game mostly centered around both teams' defense," Coach Gunn of NorthWood said.

Warriors Continue March To Indy

LOWELL - On a night when a hobbled Jordan Swain was underused, it was the arm of Kory Lantz that gave Wawasee a 28-21 win over Lowell Friday and a date with Logansport in the northern 4A semistate. After a seesaw affair that saw the Warriors never trail, Lowell tied things up at 21-21 with 7:21 left in the third quarter. When quarterback Scott Schulz found fullback Jeff Clemens from 16 yards out on a bootleg, Clemens took the lion's share of offensive output for the Red Devils. The Warriors and head coach Joe Rietveld made 2000-yard rusher Toby Goetz public enemy No.1. "We knew where he was at all times," said Rietveld of Goetz."We had an extra guy where we thought he was going to be because he's a heck of a player." Undaunted by Lowell's tying score, the Warriors came back on the ensuing possession and showed why they were favorites to represent the north in Indianapolis over the weekend.

Whitko Beats 'Busco

SOUTH WHITLEY - For 16 minutes on Friday night, the Churubusco Eagles shut down Whitko's Zach Henson, sort of.But in the second half, Henson did as he usually does, taking over a tight game and leading the Wildcats to a 61-53 victory. Two minutes into the opening period, Henson came down hard on his ankle after trying to block a Todd Fleetwood layup. He went to the lockerroom to get his ankle taped up, and he came back with two minutes to play in the quarter.Henson was ineffective, though, and only scored three points on two shots. As a result, Churubusco led 25-24 at the break. The second half was a different story completely. Henson scored 29 points on 14 shots, including 15 of Whitko's 17 fourth-quarter points, to get the Wildcats to .500 on the year at 3-3.

Warriors Indianapolis Bound!

SYRACUSE - Jimtown head football coach Bill Sharpe visited the Wawasee Warriors on Tuesday and told the players whoever made the least amount of mistakes would win Friday's northern semistate.Sharpe knows a thing or two about winning postseason football, leading his Jimmies to three 2A state titles in 25 years. The Warriors played a near flawless first half on their way to a 49-19 defeat of Logansport that earns Wawasee its first state finals appearance since 1985. The coach of that '85 team, Myron Dickerson was a special color analyst for one of the local radio stations Friday night. And the colors du jour were forest green and old gold, those of Wawasee. Logansport received the ball to start the game and drove to Wawasee's 38-yard line before Berries running back Brent Woodruff was stripped and his fumble was recovered by Wawasee defensive end Tim Brumbaugh. As they've done all year, the Warriors were quick to capitalize.

Warsaw Wrestlers Open Season

Warsaw opened the new wrestling season with two wins against three losses in the Tiger Invitational Wrestling Classic on Saturday. Kokomo won the team competition with a 5-0 record, followed by LaVille, 4-1, Eastside 3-2, Warsaw 2-3, Triton 1-4, and Tippecanoe Valley 0-5. Warrior Defense Deserving Of Respect

SYRACUSE - Aretha Franklin sang about it, while the late Rodney Dangerfield joked about not getting any. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. With Wawasee High School's varsity football team enjoying its best season in the program's history, setting a school record for victories and winning the Northern Lakes Conference and sectional championships for the first time since 1985, the Warrior defense, in a way, might feel like Dangerfield. On a team with offensive stars like Kory Lantz, Jordan Swain, Andrew Mock and Ben Chamoux, Wawasee's defense has garnered few headlines this season, yet has stood its ground time and time again. An underestimated group, coach Joe Rietveld's defensive team held conference rival Plymouth to 81 yards rushing on 33 attempts in Friday's 28-7 sectional win. Running the football is Plymouth's bread-and-butter, yet it was the Warrior defense that feasted play after play, shutting down talented Rockies running back Jared Gaul.

Big Second Half Propels Tigers Past Eagles

Warsaw's girls basketball team's 49-38 win over rival Columbia City Tuesday in the Tiger Den was a tale of two halves, to say the least. Fortunately for Warsaw coach Will Wienhorst and his Tigers, their second-half performance far outweighed their first half as they improved their record to 7-1. Columbia City took early control with 5-foot-10 forward Jovan Krider hitting the first two points of the game. But their lead didn't last long as 6-2 Tiger center Katie Elliott, who earlier in the day signed her letter of intent to play for John Brown University, tallied the first two Warsaw points on a rebound and bucket off of Jenna Rooney's missed three-point attempt. The score was briefly knotted at four each before the Eagles took their second lead of the game, only to see Elliott hit her first of three three-pointers, giving Warsaw a 7-6 advantage with five minutes left to play in the first frame.

Lancer Women Avoid Repeat

WINONA LAKE - All the while picking up its sixth win of the season, a win total higher than all of last year, Grace College's women's basketball team was trying not to repeat history against visiting Manchester in a 60-41 win Tuesday. A year ago, Grace led by two at halftime and held a double-digit lead in the second half before Manchester came back and won 68-64. Last night, Grace led by two at halftime and held a double-digit lead in the second half.Only this time, the Lancers were able to close things out, upping their record to 6-6. "I think we do," second-year Grace coach Lori Wynn said when asked if her team had the ability to close teams out."We have a lot more depth." Grace, a team that had seven players that saw ample playing time a year ago, had nine players score at least four points last night.
