State disbursements delayed, varied

After Indiana school corporations pass budgets and get them approved by the state, when do they get their money? In the past, schools would receive a payment on the first business day of every month.Since 2002, that has changed. Now schools receive payments anywhere from last business day of the month to the middle of the month. The state, however, has been trying to get the payment schedule back on track, Wawasee School Corp.Director of Finance Jim Evans and Warsaw School Corp.Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott said during an interview Thursday afternoon. The state officially doesn't have to tell schools their budgets are approved until mid-February.A school corporation then has two weeks to question the state on the approved budget. "There's not a whole lot you can do about it at that point," Evans said. "They have a legislative date that they have to hit," said Scott.

Council On Aging, CCS Seek Inclusion In County Budget

Two nonprofit organizations that hadn't requested funds in the past made requests Tuesday for 2003 for funds from the Kosciusko County commissioners' budget. A third did not appear before the commissioners as scheduled. Tippecanoe Environmental Foundation made a $1,000 request for 2003.No representative for the Lakeland Art Association was present to make a financial request. Most returning nonprofit organizations making financial requests before the commissioners made the same request as 2002 or slightly higher.

Talented Lancers Hoping To Take Next Step

WINONA LAKE - After a season flooded with success and acomplishments in 1995, this year's version of the Grace College volleyball team is hungry for more as it anticipates a shot at the elusive NAIA National Tournament. The 1995 season saw the Lancers finish with a 44-5 record and a NCCAA National Championship banner, but a loss to Taylor in the NAIA regionals brought the storybook season to an abrupt end. This year, the Lancers hope to go one step further. With the nucleus of seasoned veterans including All-Americans Rebecca Wahlstrom and Melissa Rants and NCCAA Coach of the Year Candace Moats, the Lancers anticipate improvement over last year.
