Tigers Get Defensive In Win

Ten minutes after Warsaw's boys basketball team beat Columbia City 55-38 Saturday, Warsaw Athletic Director Dave Fulkerson walked past the Tigers' locker room. He did not go in, but he stopped to pay a compliment. "They play the best defense I've seen since I've been here," Fulkerson said.Fulkerson has been Warsaw's athletic director for 16 years. He has seen the Tigers win a state championship and take two other trips to the final four in those 16 years. "I knew we were going into this situation tonight," Columbia City coach Chris Benedict said."We had a very good defensive team playing against us, and we're not a very good offensive team right now.We have two players returning from last year, and we have had to plug three others in.

Fick Lone Senior, Leads Young Warrior Team

SYRACUSE - Because she is the oldest and most experienced on a team filled with underclassmen, Wawasee High School girls basketball coach Kem Zolman calls Tiffany Fick the "grandmother of the group." Indeed, the 5-foot-9 Fick is the senior member of Zolman's 2005-2006 Warrior team. In fact, she's the only senior. Fick returns for her senior campaign after scoring 11.7 points per game and pulling down 8.8 rebounds last year for the Warriors, who finished the season 14-9 overall, 5-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference and fell 42-29 to rival NorthWood in the sectional championship. Rachel Canen was last year's leading scorer at 12.5 points per game and was lost to graduation. Like Fick this year, Canen was the only senior a year ago.

Tiger Girls Fall In Semistate Final

GOSHEN -ÊThe Warsaw girls soccer team may not have won the semistate against South Bend St.Joseph's Saturday night, but they did win something almost as important - respect. "To go up 1-0 and hold them to just one goal until overtime," said Warsaw coach Mike Getz after his team's 3-1 overtime loss to the Indians."I think we gained respect out there today. Some people thought we got the easy road here, and we proved we belonged." In the final game of the Goshen Semistate, Warsaw jumped out to an early lead. With just 27:06 left on the first-half clock, Tiger freshman Abby Rankin scored the first goal of the game. The unassisted goal came when St.Joe's goal keeper left the box to chase the ball, and Rankin punched the ball to the back of the net to put Warsaw up 1-0.It was just the second time Warsaw had crossed into St.Joe's side of the field.

Powers Brings Winning Ways To Squire Wrestling

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊWhen Pat Powers started coaching Manchester High School's wrestling team 11 years ago, the Squires had just come off two seasons with only two victories.Only six boys went out for the team. In his first year at the helm, Powers helped Manchester double that win total. Now, in Power's 11th year as head coach, Manchester has sported several winning seasons. In fact, the Squires have been above .500 for the past three seasons. "When I first came, the program was down," said Powers."They had only had one win a year in the previous two years.Six kids came out for wrestling my first year. "My first year, we doubled the wins. The next year, we doubled it again and won four meets. Now we have had winning records the past three years." However, Manchester is not content with winning season records. They want something more.

Manchester Girls Aim To Right A Wrong

As Manchester basketball coach Jody Shewman looked at the 1997-1998 issue of Hoosier Basketball with star junior forward Megan Eckert, any excitement or anticipation they had when they opened the magazine dissolved into disgust by the time they tossed it aside. Two things irked Shewman and Eckert. One, the Squires are coming off a 14-6 season, they have four starters returning, yet they couldn't crack the top 10 poll - in Class 2A.Two, Eckert did not make the all-state first team. She didn't make the second team.Or the third team.Or the fourth team. Eckert and Shewman felt she was deserving, and they had the numbers to back their argument.Eckert, who started on the varsity squad her freshman and sophomore years, averaged 19.4 points and 5.8 rebounds a game last year.If she stays on the same pace, she will be one of the top four players in school history when her career ends, along with Amy Fahrnow, Jennifer Frieden and Barb Orpurt.

Bruins Batter Tigers

MUNCIE - Unfortunately for Warsaw, No.4 Fort Wayne Northrop was not looking ahead. The only unranked team in the Delta Semistate, the Tigers were hoping the Bruins had their sights set on a championship game matchup with either No.2 Muncie Central or No.7 Delta. But it was no such luck.Fort Wayne Northrop entered the semistate semifinals with its focus squarely on the task at hand and duplicated its regular season domination of Warsaw with a 15-6, 15-8 win Saturday. "I was hoping they were taking us a little more lightly than they did," Warsaw coach Jamie Byron said."I can't say we played our best volleyball because we didn't.They were ready for us.They came out on fire." Northrop went onto win the semistate with a win over Delta in the championship match.

NorthWood Panthers Quiet Defensive Doubters

After several starters graduated last year, NorthWood's defense had something to prove. "After last year, no one thought that our defense would be any good, especially our linebackers," said senior linebacker Tony Garl."People said we were too small and we were not as good as last year.We wanted to prove them wrong." "We're more motivated now," said senior linebacker David Higley."Last year a lot of defensive players graduated and we had something to prove. We've gotta get the job done every game.Every game we are getting better." However, in their quest to prove themselves, the Panthers football team faced a game that became a turning point in the season. That game came in the third week of the season against Concord when NorthWood fell to the Minutemen 35-28. That game was an eye-opener for the Panthers.Since then, the NorthWood defense has stepped up and helped lead the Panthers to a 9-0 record.

DeGood Is Great For Wawasee

SYRACUSE - Two of the Northern Lakes Conference wrestling powerhouses - Warsaw and Wawasee - collided Thursday evening. At stake: Each team entered with spotless 6-0 records. Each team wanted to stay unblemished. Even more at stake: A conference win. Before Thursday, Warsaw and Wawasee dusted opponents as easily as they swatted flies away.Warsaw's closest match was a 45-24 win over Whitko.Wawasee's closest match was a 66-8 win over Northridge. This one would be different. The final score would ride on the outcome of the last match of the evening.Wawasee won 34-24. Wawasee advanced to the state finals last season. The Warriors are ranked 14th in the latest poll.Still, a 10-point match with Warsaw did not shock Wawasee coach Scott DeHart.

Warsaw Grinds Out Win Over Northridge

MIDDLEBURY - For the second straight year, the Warsaw Tiger girls' basketball team left its game with Northridge just thankful for a win. These games are not masterpieces when these two teams get together. Not by a long shot.Last year Warsaw shot 30 percent from the floor and escaped with a 39-36 home win over Northridge. Like last year, Tuesday night's game was ugly, but the Tigers escaped with the 'W', this time 46-37 on the road. The Tigers, ranked No.20 in this week's Associated Press poll, improved to 4-0. The two teams looked like two over-the-hill, has-been fighters duking it out. Both were sluggish.Neither could deliver the knockout punch. Until Sherri Ross landed two big blows in the fourth quarter. The Tigers as a team scored eight points in the eight minutes in the third quarter. Ross scored six points by herself in a span of 25 seconds in the fourth quarter.

Manchester Girls Hold Off Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY - Jody Shewman could do nothing but try to shake the cobwebs from her head after her Manchester Squires girls basketball team squeak by Whitko 56-52 Thursday. After watching her team struggle through a 15-of-51 shooting effort, it was hard to blame her. After all, her team is ranked No.14 in the latest poll in 2A. "It was pretty scary," Shewman said."If we were playing well, it wouldn't have gotten out of control. But we're struggling right now and have some things to work on.The poll stuff is great, but on any night it's anybody's game whether you're ranked No.1 or 100." After three quarters of back-and-forth basketball, Whitko's Trisha Peters nailed a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter to give the Wildcats a 42-38 lead.

Warsaw Grapplers Start Season With Wins

The Warsaw Tiger wrestlers roared off to a great start, going undefeated in the season-opening Tiger Classic on Saturday, a major turn-around in the face of last year's two wins and three losses. This year, five teams visited the Tiger Den and all were victims of a hardworking Tiger squad. The first casualty was Eastside, falling by a score of 67-10, and then LaVille put up a bit of a fight but came up short, losing 48-31.By a score of 78-6, Warsaw next thrashed Tippecanoe Valley's abbreviated squad of five wrestlers. The Kokomo Wildcats were scrappy but the Tigers came out on top, 39-30.The Triton Trojans with only seven wrestlers managed to grab three wins against Warsaw, but were bested, 63-18.

Warsaw Girls Soccer Loss Ends Season, Gains Respect

SOUTH BEND -ÊThe theme for the Warsaw Tiger girls soccer team Saturday was respect. This year's squad was in search of respect that seemed to elude them all year long. The Tigers breezed through the regular season, sectional and regional to find themselves facing a tough South Bend Adams team in its own backyard. The Eagles were able to hold off an upstart and motivated Tiger squad for a 2-1 victory Saturday and a meeting in the South Bend Semistate final against eventual champion Chesterton. Warsaw went into Saturday's matchup against the Eagles with a 17-1-2 record.Yet the Tigers were nowhere to be found on the final regular season Top 20 coaches' poll. Warsaw set the school record for most wins, went through the NLC undefeated, and had a 14-game winning steak, yet got no respect. First year coach Mike Getz is the first one to vocalize what many people have thought about his team.

Tigers Clip Chargers 37-34

Warsaw welcomed Elkhart Memorial to the Northern Lakes Conference by handing the Chargers a narrow 37-34 Tuesday defeat. This was the first wrestling meet in the NLC for Memorial, as the school is being added as the eighth team in the conference. The Chargers had been in the Northern Indiana Conference since 1972, with Penn, Mishawaka, Elkhart Central and five South Bend Schools - Adams, Clay, LaSalle, Riley, and Washington. Memorial coach Brian Seltzer said he felt good about his young team coming into their first competition of the season. "We've had good practices," said Seltzer, "and I feel like we are right on track." The Chargers' varsity roster included four freshmen and four sophomores, all of whom showed a good strength and athleticism. Elkhart jumped out to a 12-0 lead with pins at 103 pounds and 112, but the Tigers answered back when Anthony Boley (119) worked a pin in 4:21 against Nick Duley.

Manchester Boys Pick Up First Win Of Season Over Tippecanoe Valley

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊAfter starting the season with a disappointing loss to Huntington North, the Manchester boys swim team got back on track with a 106-62 win over Tippecanoe Valley Thursday night. "It was disappointing to open our season against such a strong opponent like Huntington North, but we recovered and made some adjustments and swam a great meet from top to bottom," said Manchester coach Kyle Wieland."The guys rose to the occasion and had some personal best times." The Squires captured nine of 12 first-place finishes in the meet with seniors Aaron Cassel and Thomas Penrod leading the way. Cassel picked up individual first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (23.79) and the 100 freestyle (54.97). Penrod placed first in the 500 freestyle (6:44.40) and the 100 backstroke (1:12.25). Cassel and Penrod also helped Manchester swim to victory in all three relay events.

Tiger Spikers Take Title

COLUMBIA CITY - For the first time in several seasons, Warsaw appeared to have some challenge in the championship match of the Columbia City Volleyball Sectional Saturday. Or so it seemed. The host Eagles entered the title game with an impressive 25-7 record this year, and had been playing their best volleyball of the season since a close loss to Warsaw in the regular season. Columbia City also had an impressive win over Tippecanoe Valley in the semifinals, and the championship was in the Eagles' home gym.Everything pointed to a highly contested match. Or so it seemed. Warsaw came out hitting on all cylinders and won the first game 15-2 behind 11 consecutive points on the serve of senior Sarah Calhoun. The second game was more of what everybody had expected, but the Tigers still came out on top 15-8 and won their eighth straight sectional title.

Warsaw Takes Third In Classic

Warsaw varsity wrestlers came away with five undefeated individuals in the Tiger Classic on Saturday.Fort Wayne's Eastside went undefeated in team competition to win the event. The Tigers settled for a 2-2 team record in this first test of the season, narrowly losing to Kokomo (39-41) and bowing to Eastside (33-45).Ê Warsaw soundly trounced Tippecanoe Valley (61-16) and crunched Triton (64-15).

Experienced East Noble Too Much For Young Warrior Girls

SYRACUSE - Fielding a young and inexperienced team, Wawasee girls basketball coach Kem Zolman said he knew the possibilty of rough times was there. He says he just didn't know when it would happen. He knows now. Scoring just two points in the second quarter and trailing by 20 at halftime, the host Warriors couldn't handle a more experienced East Noble team and fell 64-44 Friday evening at the Hardwood Teepee. "East Noble played pretty well," said Zolman."They took advantage of our youth. You gotta give them credit, they knocked their shots down. They did a nice job taking us out early." A team that returned four starters, East Noble showed its experience, leaving a Wawasee squad with just one junior and one senior digging out of a huge hole all night. Unfortunately for Zolman and Wawasee, the Warriors didn't have a big enough shovel. The Knights led 20-11 after the first eight minutes of action and then really poured it on in the second quarter.

Savill Scores 28 As Triton Cruises

This is the word the Triton varsity boys basketball team shouted before they took the court in the second half of their 80-48 win over Elkhart Baptist last night. Oddly enough, that's how the Trojans accounted for most of their offensive output in their second win of the season, by hustling. Coach Joe Bennett's team got on the scoreboard in a hurry as 6-foot-2 Matt Savill got two of his game-high 28 points just 20 seconds into the game. The Eagles would never be this close again as Triton enjoyed a 10-15 point cushion throughout the game. Before it was said and done, the Trojans opened the game with an 11-2 run, and defensive pressure that didn't allow the Eagles to score their first basket until nearly three minutes had ticked off the game clock.

Concord Gadget Play Trips Wawasee Warriors

Dunlap - With Halloween just three days away, Concord football coach Tim Dawson reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out a Minutemen treat, a 62-yard reverse by junior wideout Jeremy Lugbill to defeat Wawasee 30-27 in Class 4A Sectional 11 second-round play Friday evening. The fourth quarter of this classic resembled a mad dash to the department store to grab a new Sony Play Station 2 as the game was full of uneasiness and excitement. "We knew coming into this one that it was going to be difficult," Dawson said."We thought that we had to get four scores or 30 points to win." Wawasee had fought an uphill battle, ever since the opening kickoff, to take the lead 27-22 on quarterback Brent Doty's scoring strike to senior wide receiver Travis Klenke.Klenke found himself lined up against no Concord defender, waved his arm to Doty, then did the rest in going for the leading score.
