Tiger Boys Open Season With Win Over Eagles

As it turns out, postponing Warsaw's boys basketball season opener the night before Thanksgiving may have been a blessing in disguise for the Tigers. With Wednesday's game called because of weather-related problems Gary Wirt would have had to face, Warsaw's coaching staff was able to scout Columbia City. The Warsaw coaching staff apparently came away with what they needed to know about the Eagles, and it turned into a 47-27 win over last year's Class 4A state runner-up Saturday at the Tiger Den. The victory was the Tigers' first win over their U.S.30 rival since 2000 and stopped a five-game losing streak to the Eagles. In those five losses, the Tigers fell by five or fewer points four times.

Recker Is Real Deal

SYRACUSE - It's scary, because Luke Recker has just begun to flex his muscle. Recker single-handedly took command of the Wawasee Warriors for 38 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists as he led his team in a lopsided 71-47 Saturday win. No one on the floor could guard him, and he even beat up on several of the Warrior double-team efforts. The scary part is, the best is yet to come. He verbally committed to Indiana University and all the hype that goes with it late in his sophomore year. Most big recruits like Recker don't make up their minds until during their senior year, but Recker knew he wanted to go to IU. "I think IU is just the right place for me," Recker said."It was a perfect fit." Recker took a trip to IU during his sophomore year.

Sluggish Vikings Win Home Opener

AKRON - It seems as if the holiday season comes sooner every year. It's not even Thanksgiving yet, but the Valley girls basketball team nearly handed Wabash an early Christmas present. The Vikings struggled from the field and with turnovers but prevailed in their home opener, 57-48. With 1:35 left in the game, Wabash drew to within 51-41 after trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half. Two consecutive steals by Kandi Brandt yielded just one free throw for the Apaches to make the score 51-42. After Brandt's second steal, she dished to forward Amy Dawes, who appeared to have an open jumper before Valley's Heather Rathbun came up and blocked the shot. Two Chelsy Rhoades free throws pushed the Vikings' lead to 53-42.

Kokomo's Grant Leads Senior Amateur

Kokomo's Bill Grant Jr.took the lead at the 12th annual Indiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship Monday with a one-under par 70 at Stonehenge Golf Club. After starting the day with a birdie on the first hole, Grant finished out the front nine with eight pars.An eagle on the 528-yard, par five 11th hole put him at 1-under for the day.Back-to-back bogets on 15 and 16 put him back at one-under for the round. He holds a two-stroke lead going into today's final round.Dale Alt of Alexandria is second with a 72. Among a five-way tie for third with a 73 is Warsaw's Jerry Nelson.Nelson is playing on his home course where earlier this year in the Indiana PGA Senior Open he set a back nine course record of six-under 30. It has been quite a week for Nelson, who on Sept.27 got his 12th career hole-in-one, by acing the 174-yard No.3 hole with a 5-iron during regular play. His wife, Pat, was the witness.

Tiger Girls Done In By Turnovers

CROWN POINT - Warsaw's varsity girls basketball team had its chances to knock off undefeated Crown Point Saturday, but they slipped through the Tigers' hands. Literally. Playing a Tom May-coached Crown Point team known for its defense, the Tigers led 33-26 at halftime and outscored the host Bulldogs in three of the four quarters. It was a third quarter that lacked offensive output and was filled with turnovers, however, that did in the Tigers, as they fell to 1-2 on the season with a 58-53 loss. Warsaw turned the ball over 26 times in the five-point loss, with 19 of the turnovers being steals that led to 22 points for the Bulldogs. Crown Point, which improved to 4-0 on the season, committed 13 turnovers.

Balanced Vikings Beat Wabash

AKRON -ÊThe Tippecanoe Valley Vikings used balanced scoring to overcome an early defecit Tuesday night in a 83-67 win over Wabash. With the Apaches' move to the Three Rivers Conference, the game was the conference opener for both squads despite it being just the second game of the season. Wabash jumped out to an early 8-0 lead to start the game. "We struggled at times tonight," said Valley head coach Bill Patrick."We weren't sharp in that first quarter defensively. We've got to do a better job of coming out on the floor ready to play." The win was the 625th of Patrick's career. Senior Adam Nelson finally put Valley on the board with a three-pointer at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter. Nelson went 2 of 5 from beyond the three-point arc for the evening. The Vikings slowly clawed their way back and eventualy took their first lead of the game when senior Kevin Kindig's layup gave Valley a 20-18 lead.

Second-Ranked Squires Win Big

NORTH MANCHESTER - Note to teams hosting the Manchester girls basketball team this year: stock up on folding chairs. With 13 players and a handful of coaches and managers, the Class 2A No.2 Squires' bench was a bit crowded Friday night. And when Manchester played defense against Mississinewa, it seemed like they were all on the court. The Squires forced seven first-quarter turnovers, jumped out to a 16-3 lead after the opening period and never looked back in a 52-17 win over the Indians. All 13 girls played - though no coaches or managers saw any action - as Manchester used suffocating defense, sharp passing and supreme team speed to top Mississinewa. The Squires saw 10 players score and saw its starters play limited minutes as Manchester's benevolent coach, Mark Underwood, began to sub players quite liberally in the second quarter.

Sluggish Offense Leads To Tiger Loss

After his Warsaw girls basketball team soundly defeated Tippecanoe Valley 102-63 in its season opener, coach Will Weinhorst said he had a team that could put some points on the board. In that game the Tigers set a school record for most points in a game and most points in a quarter.Warsaw used a 29-of-63 shooting performance from the field to do so. In Warsaw's second game of the season, the Tigers cruised past Bremen 75-41 on 26-of-60 shooting. Wienhorst was right, he had a team that could score points.Warsaw came into Friday's contest with visiting Crown Point averaging 88.5 points per game. The third game wasn't a charm as the Bulldogs clipped the Tigers 52-47.Crown Point now boasts a winning record of 3-2 after the win.Warsaw falls to 2-1 on the season. Warsaw's high-octane offense shot a dismal 15 of 50 from the field last night, and managed to put just four points on the board in the entire third quarter, all coming at the charity stripe.

Whitko Girls Fall To Fort Wayne Elmhurst

SOUTH WHITLEY - Whitko spotted Fort Wayne Elmhurst a 12-point lead but battled back before falling to the Trojans, 75-52. Elmhurst's full-court press frustrated the Wildcats for much of the first half, causing nine first quarter turnovers that led to a 12-0 run.Natasha Gayday led the early Elmhurst charge, scoring five points during the run. "I think ultimately what hurt us was their quickness. That's tough to deal with, especially with a team as scrappy as (Elmhurst). However, I was very pleased with the intensity level we brought to the game," said Whitko head coach Ryan Cunningham. After being unable to even get the ball past halfcourt, Whitko responded valiantly with a 15-2 run of its own.Angie Juricak, Whitko's leading scorer on the night with 15 points, had six of those in the first quarter.

High School Wrestling Season Begins Saturday

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊWhen Manchester High School wrestling coach Pat Powers thinks about this season, the first thing he mentions is that he wants to avoid some hangups from last year. "If I had my 'druthers,' I'd rather stay injury free and healthy through the season," said Powers."Other than the usual flus and colds of the season, of course.Last year we had two guys with mono, one with a wrist injury and one with a kidney problem. If we can stay away from those two bugaboos, the year looks very good." Another hurdle the Squires will have to overcome is low numbers.

NorthWood's Season Ends At Semistate

NAPPANEE -ÊA football game could not possibly get any closer.21-20. At the end of four quarters of play, No.5 NorthWood and No.6 Zionsville were knotted at 14-all, sending their Class 3A semistate championship game into overtime. After a wacky set of seven - yes, seven - overtime plays in one drive, Zionsville held a 21-14 lead. Then NorthWood got the ball, and Jesse Fink punched it in from 10 yards out on the first play. What happened next will have NorthWood fans asking "What if?" for years to come. The Panther coaching staff decided go for two and run the play that worked perfectly for the overtime touchdown. However, the play did not work perfectly for the conversion.A dropped pitch left NorthWood one point short of the win, 21-20, and a chance to play in the state championship game next week. NorthWood ends the season 11-3, while Zionsville improves to 11-3.

Wildcats Reach .500

SOUTH WHITLEY - The Whitko Wildcats scored 41 points in the second half en route to a 69-54 Saturday win over Central Noble. The Wildcats had just 10 turnovers to Central Noble's 19. "We did a lot better job of handling the ball," Whitko coach Dave Henson said."Five of those came in the fourth quarter." The was the second in two nights for the Wildcats, who began the season 0-2.They came back from a 28-point deficit in the third quarter to beat Northfield on Friday. They are now 2-2. "We were concerned about how we would come back emotionally after the big comeback Friday," Henson said."We were worried about being emotionally flat." Zach Henson recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists to lead Whitko.Jason Ayres added 14 points. Whitko, 1-0 in the Three Rivers Conference, is at Tippecanoe Valley on Friday.

Greg Clay Strong In The Fourth, Tiger Boys Win

FORT WAYNE - In building a strong foundation one must have sturdy materials. For Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team at Fort Wayne South Tuesday night it was clay - senior Greg Clay. The 6-foot-4 wing scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Tigers upended the host Archers 55-50 for their first win of the season.Warsaw is 1-1, while South Side falls to 2-1. With Warsaw down 38-36 with 5:54 remaining in the final frame, Clay scored the Tigers' next seven points - a three-pointer, two field goals and a free throw - to give them a 44-39 lead with 3:06 left. While Clay found the basket in the fourth quarter, shooting 3 of 5 from the field and 6 of 7 from the charity stripe, South Side found shots but couldn't get them to fall. The Archers were 5 of 16 from the field in the fourth quarter, including a 2-of-7 performance from the arc by 6-1 junior Cameron Kizer.

Wabash No Test For Valley

AKRON - In terms of the coaching experience in Tuesday's Wabash/Tippecanoe Valley varsity boys basketball clash, Valley's Bill Patrick played the role of the teacher; Wabash's Mike Noszka was the student. Patrick, the silver-haired 32nd-year veteran, picked up his 513th career win as his Vikings schooled Wabash 78-43.Noszka, the blond-headed youngster in his third year with the Apaches, watched as his team lost for the 25th consecutive time. With four future Valley opponents (Plymouth, Whitko, Manchester, Northfield) in the stands taking notes, the Vikings threw a test at Wabash in the form of a 1-3-1 half-court trap defense - Wabash failed miserably.

A Classic Battle

Tippecanoe Valley couldn't quite close the door on its upset bid, and the little crack that the Vikings left was all Warsaw needed to sneak back into the game in the Tigers' 63-62 thrilling overtime win over the Vikings Wednesday at the Tiger Den. "We are just fortunate enough to win," Warsaw coach Al Rhodes said."It was just a hard-played game, and it could have gone either way." It was Rhodes' 300th career win as the coach of the Tigers. It was Jason Alspaugh's jumper with 25 seconds left in overtime that provided the Tigers with a 63-62 lead, but it was a charging foul called on Valley ace Jeff Brown that sealed the game for Warsaw with :13 left. The charge not only returned the ball to the Tigers, but it was also Brown's fifth personal, sending him to the bench. It became big a second later when Warsaw turned the ball back over to Valley, but the Vikings' play had been drawn up with Brown and an isolation play in mind.

Lancers Upset No. 16 Cornerstone

WINONA LAKE - The Grace College men's basketball team overcame a 12-point second half deficit and outscored Cornerstone 12-2 in overtime to defeat the No.16 team in the country 83-73 Saturday at the Warsaw Optimist KCCCF Classic Saturday afternoon. The victory avenges a five-point loss to Cornerstone earlier in the year and snaps a five-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles, dating back to a 97-65 win over Grand Rapids Baptist (before an institutional name change) during the 1991-92 season. Cornerstone capped off an eight-point run midway through the second half with a thunderous John Jonker dunk to put the Golden Eagles ahead 58-46 with 9:50 to play in the game. But Jonker got called for a technical foul for hanging on the rim and, what could have become a nail in the Lancers' coffin, became new life.

Warriors Hit 92 In Win Over West Noble

SYRACUSE -ÊBefore the girls basketball season started at Wawasee, coach Kem Zolman expected Jocelyn Higginbotham to be the 'junk lady' for the Wawasee team, the girl who picked up the offensive rebounds and got an occasional shot under the basket. However, Higginbotham has proved to be much more than just a 'junk lady' for the Warriors. In Wawasee's 92-66 Tuesday win over West Noble, Higginbotham scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Warriors. "I can't say enough about Jocelyn," said Zolman."She is playing with tremendous confidence, and that is wonderful for her.She is not the aggressive type, on the court or off.She is more laid back.
