CCAC Board Scores With Bontley As New Director

Ethan Bontly planned to stay in England, finish work on his London Metropolitan University dissertation and, hopefully, land a job in that country's football industry.English "football" translates to soccer in the states. Last fall Bontly applied for and secured the City/County Athletic Complex director's position and moved back to the U.S.in November. "As late as September, we never planned to make a move to the states," Bontly said last week.The "we" includes his fiance and former Turkish National Fencing Team member, Seyran Turkmen. The couple met at the university while Bontly pursued a master's degree in sports management and administration.Turkmen has a teaching license and is waiting for a permit to work.She also has competed in (Division 1-equivalent) track and field meets in the long jump and high jump events.

Grant Enables School Resource Officers

Deputies Don Wiesehan and Chris Rager are a new breed of officer with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department. The KCSD in December was awarded a federal grant of nearly $230,000 to hire two officers to work in area schools.The U.S.Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services program grant is intended to provide $125,000 to fund the salary and benefits of each officer.The COPS grant is the same one that has allowed police departments throughout the nation to hire additional officers in an effort to make neighborhoods safer. Wiesehan was hired from within the department to serve as school resource officer for Tippecanoe Valley schools, and Rager was hired from the North Webster Police Department to serve in Wawasee schools.Both carry the rank of deputy with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.

Though a carpenters union strike halted work on the new Madison Elementary School building project for two months in 2009, it won't keep the project from being done on time.


Attorney outlines steps to annex properties

MILFORD - Two more steps were taken by the Milford Town Council Monday to annex property into the town's corporate limits. First, councilmen Bob Phillips and Doug Ruch adopted the fiscal plan for the annexation.Second, the two councilmen approved introducing the annexation ordinance June 17 at 7 p.m. Council president John Lehman had to abstain from the vote because he owns property to be annexed. The areas the council is looking to annex include North Park subdivision sections one and two, Phend & Brown's property and Darrell Krugman's property. Town attorney Jay Rigdon said the next step will be to give public notice of the introduction of the annexation ordinance.A letter to all affected property owners also will be sent out. The letter will explain the town's need to continue to look at expansion, will give the date and time of the meeting and will include copies of the ordinance and fiscal plan.

County Takes Care Of Business

• Inventory tax under scrutiny At the Dec.11 Kosciusko County council meeting, the council will hold a public meeting on eliminating the inventory tax. However, if the county eliminates that tax, the county may add an additional 0.16 percent rate to the Economic Development Income Tax. Thursday at the county council meeting, county council president Harold Jones said the council has discussed the elimination of the inventory tax for two years now. "It's not going to go away itself without some thought," Jones said. Sue Ann Mitchell, county auditor, said the first step in eliminating the inventory tax is looking at the reporting requirements for inventory.That has to be done by the end of the year.

WCHS Students To Attend Inauguration

Editor's Note: Times-Union staff writer David Slone was invited to travel with Dave Hoffert's WCHS history class to attend Barack Obama's inauguration. He will be filing daily reports.WASHINGTON, D.C. - Instead of learning about history in class, 30 Warsaw Community High School students left Sunday to take part in it.The students and their chaperones left about 7 p.m. for Washington, D.C. The students return to Warsaw Wednesday morning. While in D.C., the agenda for the students includes touring museums and war memorials and attending President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony Tuesday.Dave Hoffert, WCHS history teacher and trip organizer, said that when it was decided last year that WCHS would have the Step 1 U.S. history class, teachers started brainstorming different ideas for the class. Hoffert said he likes the idea of students being able to feel, see and hold what they're learning in their hands.

Summer sign-ups for Warsaw Community High School Driver's Education is through March 28. The summer sessions will be June 11-29, and July 9-27.

SYRACUSE - Virginia L. Pergrem, 90, of Ligonier, died at 1:50 p.m. March 3, 2008, in Maples of Waterford Crossing Nursing Home, Goshen.

Marcella Ballard

WABASH - Marcella Ballard, 85, of North Manchester, died at 3:20 a.m. Nov. 18, 2007, in Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

Pizza King Target Of Burglars

An overnight break-in to a Warsaw restaurant resulted in the loss of about $1,000. Warsaw police were called to Pizza King on East Winona Avenue, Warsaw, about 10 a.m.Sunday after an employee came in to open the restaurant and found an open door. The employee said he stepped through the door and saw the office was ransacked, so he left the building and called police, according to a WPD report. Upon investigation, it was learned that a safe door was opened and $380 cash, as well as $672.75 in rolled quarters from the game machines, were missing.It is believed the electronically controlled safe would have to have been left unsecured or opened with the proper combination for access to be gained. No sign of forced entry to the building was found.

Walker Named WHA Director

Catharine Walker has been named the new executive director of Warsaw's Housing Authority. She replaces Vickie Provine, who resigned earlier this month to take a position in Bloomington. Robert Kline, president of the WHA, said the board has been pleased with Walker's eight years with the agency. "She has contributed to the reputation and tradition of the organization.Catharine will be leading our organization into the new millennium," Kline said in a prepared statement. Walker is a member of the National Association of Housing Redevelopment and the Indiana Association of Community and Economic Development.She's also been associated with the local Habitat for Humanity and Step Ahead.

BREMEN - Genevieve "Genny" M. Walker, 81, of Bremen, died Feb. 11, 2009, in Community Hospital of Bremen.
