Warsaw Gets Its Way At Sectional

SYRACUSE - When you look at the girls tennis sectional at Wawasee High School, things just seemed to go Warsaw's way. For starters, the Tigers drew a bye, giving them an automatic bid in the semifinal round against 1-9 Manchester, a team that Warsaw quickly beat 5-0, advancing to the championship round, where they beat Tippecanoe Valley 3-2 to garner the sectional title. Exactly how quick Warsaw beat the Squires is unknown, but the length of the match was much shorter than the hour and 15 minutes the Tigers and Vikings were given to rest between the semifinal and championship rounds. It was a different story altogether for Valley, who was in the midst of its best tennis season in the history of the school, setting all records for girls tennis this year. The Vikings were on the ropes all morning with Wawasee before they pulled out a 3-2 victory, setting up the championship round rematch with Warsaw.

Group Backing Naming Of Field

To preserve history and honor a man that they believe made an impact on the Warsaw community, a group of former Warsaw High School football players is backing a proposal to transfer the name Fisher Field to the new athletic complex at Warsaw Community High School. County Treasurer Kent Adams and Bob Lichtenwalter, more commonly known as "Coach" to local residents, are heading the group that will petition the school board seeking the name transfer. Lichtenwalter was the varsity quarterback for the late George Fisher in 1941, while Adams was the Tigers' quarterback in 1951, which was Fisher's 26th and final season coaching the Tigers. "It's a way to preserve history," said Adams."It's meaningful for us that went through that time and for the future." Fisher has 103 wins as head football coach of the Tigers and is the school's all-time winningest football coach. The new field at WCHS, which hosted its first game Friday, is currently called Tigers Athletic Complex.

Salvation Army Tradition Dates Back To 1891

The next time you pass a Salvation Army bell ringer, think about the long tradition that has existed since 1891. The annual tradition of Salvation Army red kettles and ringing bells began in December of 1891 when an Army captain in San Francisco sought to find a way to provide a free Christmas dinner to the area's poor persons. But how would he pay for the food? As he went about his daily tasks, the question stayed in his mind.Suddenly, his thoughts went back to his days as a sailor in Liverpool, England, where he saw a large pot into which charitable donations were thrown by passersby.
