10 Years AgoScot and Jorie Bail spent the last year teaching in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. They teach at an English-speaking private Christian school, Los Pinares. Scot is a substitute teacher for all grades and Jorie, a WCHS graduate, is an art teacher. Scot and Jorie are home for a visit this summer. On a side trip to Nicaragua, they saw a retired school bus from Goshen. "It's good to see that vehicles have an extended life expectancy out of the country." The races were dotted by several accidents, but no serious injuries. In one instance, Max Lambert of North Manchester tangled with Dick Leiter of Warsaw. Leiter lost a wheel, the result being that Lambert flipped end over end in front of the grandstand. Jerry Egolf, North Manchester, won the jalopy race; Bob Jonas, LaPorte, stock feature race; Pinkey Stewart, Kokomo, consolation race; DeWayne Fox, Columbia City, six fastest stock cars race. Heat winners: Don Murphy, South Whitley; Larry Bills, Columbia City; and Larry Baker, Chick Engle, and Charlie Gross, all of Warsaw. 75 Years AgoShipment was received of 10,000 Warsaw Daily Times/ Merchants half-price matinee discount tickets for the Russell Brothers Circus, appearing in Warsaw June 10. The tickets will entitle the bearer to the half-price of 20 cents for adults and 10 cents for children for the afternoon showing. Regular admission is 40 cents and 20 cents. Warsaw merchants will distribute them among their customers until the supply is exhausted. Circus officials say there are thousands of free seats at no additional charge. Reserved seats may be purchased at your option.

Sixth-grade teachers are Ed Jarrett, Dan Graney, Mindy Stookey and Melissa Lanwerlan. The Megan Easterday Mental Attitude Award was given to Amanda Schroeder, daughter of Ot and Deb Schroeder. Randy Polston is principal of Harrison Elementary. 25 Years AgoSteve Petro, president of Petro Brothers Chrysler-Dodge, announced two promotions at the auto dealership. Barry Bailey has been promoted to the position of sales manager after 1-1/2 years as business manager. Before coming to Warsaw, he spent three years as a salesman at a dealership in Terre Haute. Dennis Kelsey was moved into the business manager position. He has been with Petro Brothers for one year, serving as a salesman. He lives in North Manchester. Adolph Rupp, head basketball coach at the University of Kentucky, was guest speaker. The Fisher Award, presented annually by George Fisher, will be given away on Awards Day May 23. Prof. Paul M. They were: great-grandmother, Helen Maxwell, Warsaw; great-great-grandmother, Rosa Bechdolt, Delphi; Benjamin Vanlaningham, Leesburg; mother, Melanie Vanlaningham, Leesburg; grandmother, Karen Swinger, Warsaw. 50 Years Ago September 26 1959 Pfs. Buddy Pettit, son of Rev. and Mrs. Raymond W. Pettit, Winona Lake, proved his talents as a Calypso singer on the "Ed Sullivan Show" last Sunday. Buddy appeared with The Jamaicans, a five-man group from Fort Meade, Md. The Jamaicans placed third in the Army's national talent contest. Buddy, who served as night policeman during the Youth for Christ conference at Winona earlier in the summer, arrived home on a 14-day leave. 75 Years Ago September 26 1934 After 30 years Ira Rothenberger, widely known funeral director of North Webster, is retiring from business while in good health. For the past three score years he has possessed the confidence of his community and the surrounding territories, and has achieved a background which has made him a friend to many people throughout the county.

Longtime newspaper reporter and editor Norman L. “Norm” Hagg, 80, Warsaw, died at approximately 6:35 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Kosciusko Community Hospital following a 16-year battle with cancer and leukemia.

Vonetta “Bonnie” Keller

PLYMOUTH — Vonetta “Bonnie” Keller, 85, a resident of Argos, passed away after a brief illness at 11:55 a.m. Aug. 25, 2017, in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne. Bonnie was born the daughter of Von Andrews and Hazel Sharp Andrews on Feb. 25, 1932, in Bourbon (Marshall County).  As a lifelong resident and a graduate of Green Township School, she worked many years as a seamstress at Hart Schaffner and Marx, Rochester, where she retired. In her younger years she could be found on her tractor helping her father on the farm and later she spent time scrapbooking. On May 18, 1956, after being introduced to Allen, she became his bride.  He survives along with her son, Roger, and wife Terry Keller, Argos. She was further blessed with her loving grandchildren: Becky Miller, Bryan Keller, Ben Keller, Aric Shufelt, Amy (Ken) Rose, Miranda (Chris) Singleton and Eric (Kimberly) Gildner; and great-grandchildren: Ashton and Braden Miller; Braxton Keller; Kody, Kyle and Wade Rose; and Skyler and Chase Singleton. Also, Bonnie is survived by her sisters: Clova Bollhoeffer, California; Joy (Scotch) Carr, Bristol; and Donna Nichole, Dandridge, Tenn. Preceeding in death were her parents and two sisters, Marcille Sickmiller and Lucille Schaffer. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 S. Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563. Russell Sammons

Russell Sammons, 80, Pierceton, passed away at 5:50 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, in Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.  He was born Nov. 22, 1936, in Prestonsburg, Ky., to Jack Clark and Rosa Sammons McGuire. He was united in marriage to Paulina Sammons on Sept. 3, 1959, in Prestonsburg.  He faithfully served his country in the United States Army from Dec. 10, 1954, to Nov. 16, 1957, as a specialist 3. He was a welder for several local manufacturing firms and a former employee for Quality Farm & Fleet, Warsaw.  He was a union steward and member of the UAW, a member of the Kosciusko County Democratic Party and former member of Pierceton American Legion Post 256. Survivors include his children: Gwendolyn (Kenneth) Bell, Atwood; Tina (Kenneth) Baugher, Cromwell; and Shawn Sammons, Pierceton; and sisters, Brenda Akers, Prestonsburg, and Linda Cox, Louisville, Ky. In addition, grandchildren Carrie Finken, Atwood; Carmen Finken, Warsaw; and Jory (Jessica) Baugher, Kimmell; and great-grandchildren Monica Mullins, Kylie Cook, Chase Howard, Lilly Howard and Daxton Baugher survive.  Along with his parents and a sister, Daisy Riser, his wife, Paulina, preceded him on Oct. 1, 2014. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw. Gabe Tribbett will officiate the services.   Calling hours are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. Thelma Ruth Hammond

Thelma Ruth Hammond, 85, Angola, formerly of Warsaw, passed away at 4:35 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017, at Northern Lakes Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Angola.  She was born Feb. 13, 1932, to John and Marie McKibbon Lursen in Kosciusko County. She was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County. She retired from Uniroyal, Warsaw. She also worked part time for various other businesses, including Pizza Hut and Country Door and Frame. She was a former member of American Legion Auxiliary, Leesburg, and Leesburg Eastern Star. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hammond, Warsaw; a sister-in-law, Jean Lursen, Leesburg; a niece, Cindy (spouse Brian) Lursen, and several other nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, Willie.  She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Howard and Fred Lursen; and a niece, Robin Lursen. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor Rob Seewald officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral chapel. Vere Allen Shenefield

Vere Allen Shenefield, 87, Warsaw, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 11, 2017, at his residence.  On Jan. 20, 1930, he was born in Bremen to Warren Allen and M. Marie Laudeman Shenefield. On Dec. 25, 1962, in Warsaw, he was united in marriage to Ruth Carolyn Robinson, who survives. He worked for Studebaker Automotive from 1951 to 1953 and then at DePuy in sales and management for 45 years, retiring in 1996.  He attended church at First United Methodist, Warsaw. He was a member of Gideons International, Pierceton Lions Club and Bremen Masonic Lodge as a 32nd Degree Mason in Scottish Rite. He proudly served in the United States Army as a SP3(T) from 1955-1961, headquarters – Aus/AGC. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter, Gay Ann Mullins, Muncie; son, Todd Allen (and spouse Christa) Shenefield, Warsaw; along with grandchildren: Skyler (and spouse Michelle) Shenefield, Warsaw; Blayne Shenefield, Warsaw; and Robinson Mullins, Muncie. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.  He was preceded by his parents and a brother, Lyle Shenefield. Visitation will be at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14.  A funeral service will be  at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, in First United Methodist Church, Warsaw, with Pastor Mark Need officiating. Late Inning Rally Falls Just Short As Tigers Lose To Northridge

For the second straight game, a late inning rally put the Warsaw Tiger baseball team in a position to earn a come from behind, walk-off win. This time however, the rally was cut just short, leading to a 5-4 Northridge victory. The Tigers are now 12-9-1 this season, 7-5 in the Northern Lakes Conference.

COLUMBIA CITY — Edna Elizabeth Gamble, 96, Goshen, passed away at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at Maples of Waterford Crossing.  Born Feb. 12, 1921, in Washington Township, Whitley County, she was the daughter of John and Dora Nancy Sievers Kneller. She graduated from Washington Center High School, earned a bachelor's degree in education from Huntington University, a master’s degree in counseling from Purdue University and a master’s degree in elementary education from St. Francis University. She completed the class work toward her doctorate at Michigan State University, along with licensing as a reading specialist. She was honored as an outstanding language arts teacher while teaching in Illinois.

Roger William Sawyer

NORTH MANCHESTER — Dr. Roger William Sawyer, 95, passed away at 9:30 p.m. May 22, 2017, at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.  Roger was born Aug. 27, 1921, to Raymond Earl and Goldie Carney Hoover Sawyer, who are deceased. On June 1, 1947, he married Hulda Bidlack, who died Feb. 17, 1992. He married Dorothy Roush in February 1993; she preceded him in death Oct. 31, 2009. He is survived by his son, Dr. Douglas (Peggy) Sawyer, Warsaw; his grandchildren, Amanda (Dave) Bailey, Warsaw; Aaron (Marcia) Sawyer, Austin, Texas; and Andrew (Rachel) Sawyer, San Francisco, Calif.; his beloved great-grandsons, Keller and Finley Bailey, Warsaw; and stepdaughters Cindy Swain, Carmel; Nancy (Dale) Geiselman, Zionsville; and Ellen (Troy) Rector, Carmel.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert; and his sister, Marjorie Chalfant. Roger graduated from Bluffton High School in 1939. He attended International Business College after serving in World War II in the Army in Burma from 1942-1945. He then went on to attend the Northern Illinois College of Optometry and graduated in 1949. He opened his optometry practice in 1949 in North Manchester, where he practiced for 37 years. He was a member of Kiwanis Club, past member of Tippy Golf Club, Stonehenge Golf Club and a charter member of Sycamore Golf Course. He was a Shriner and also a member of North Manchester United Methodist Church. His passion was golf, and he scored four holes-in-one in his lifetime – the last coming at age 87. He wintered in the Naples, Fla., area for 35 years. He was a member of Quail Run Golf Course there. He loved bird watching, and he loved to whistle, sing and dance.
