Rhodes Takes Coaching Job At Logansport

Standing at a podium almost a year ago, tears in his eyes and family at his side, Al Rhodes walked away from the basketball empire he built at Warsaw Community High School. He said he wanted to make it clear, however, he wasn't done with basketball, and as it turns out, he's not done coaching at the high school level in Indiana. After just one year of retirement from coaching, Rhodes has accepted the head coaching position at Logansport High School. In 22 years at Warsaw, Rhodes compiled a stellar 405-133 record, taking five teams to the Final Four and winning the 1984 state championship.Along the way he won 14 sectionals, seven regionals, 10 Northern Lakes Conference titles, four South Bend Bend Holiday Tournaments, six Warsaw Holiday Tournaments, one Hall of Fame Classic and two NLC Holiday Tournament championships.

Three local bicyclists had the opportunity to meet Lance Armstrong during a bicycle trip across Iowa last month. The bicyclists are members of Team Harmless, a bicycle club consisting of 22 members from Warsaw and Indianapolis and New Jersey, Illinois and Michigan, who participated in Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. The event was July 23- 29. The 467.6-mile ride was hosted by the Des Moines Register and began at Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and ended at Muscatine, Iowa. Greg Dearborn, director of administration and purchasing at Little Crow Foods, was one of the cyclists from Warsaw who participated in the trip. It was Dearborn's second year for participating and he said riding with 9,000 other bicyclists and meeting Armstrong were highlights of the trip. New KCH Administrator Looks To The Future

Kosciusko Community Hospital's new chief executive officer said Monday it's too early to tell what, if any, weaknesses the hospital has that need to be addressed. He's still meeting with management and physicians and learning about the hospital. "Until I get input and comments" from the hospital board and staff, "I couldn't tell you what the weaknesses are," said Michael L.Mullins, 38. He said he doesn't see many weaknesses and he gives credit for that to former KCH CEO Wayne Hendrix, who retired July 1. A thorough review of the hospital needs to be performed first, Mullins said, and then he, the advisory board and the medical staff can "carve out a vision for the hospital together." Mullins grew up in El Paso, Texas. His father was in the military, so his family moved around a lot, he said.

Wawasee Assembles Data Base Of Test Info

SYRACUSE - Wawasee Schools has turned piles of data into easily accessible information, Superintendent Dr.Mark Stock said Tuesday during the regular school board meeting. "What I'm excited about this year is that we're actually using most of the data," data technician Robert Cockburn said."We're getting it into the hands of the teachers." Previously, individual data collected from ISTEP tests and district-wide assessments was stored in each student's file.A teacher's ability to see patterns or deficiencies in multiple students was limited because of how widespread the information was. Now that information is charted in easy-to-read graphs.Teachers can look at a three-year summary of how their students did on various tests. This information also is broken down to show how students did in accomplishing particular learning goals and in achieving academic benchmarks set by the district.
