- Christmas Parties - Angie's Lights - Nut Sale Thanks - Good Kids Christmas Parties Editor, Times-Union: This is the first year I have had a child in school; and have been very disappointed to learn that the school system will not allow parties (Halloween, Christmas, etc.) in the classroom. These were some of my most fondest memories of grade school. We believe that the children are being deprieved of fond school memories.I understand there are different beliefs of the holidays; but there always has been.Ê We use to make changes to accommodate everyone. All the children wanting to participate could bring in a canned good, and still have their Christmas party in class.
- Fine History - Act Of Kindness - Central Park Fine History Editor, Times-Union: After reading this history that Mr.Coplen has written for the Kosciusko County Historical Society, it makes me proud of the fact that I have always been a citizen of this county. Mr.Coplen interviewed many people in the county to compile facts, and along with numerous pictures, he has woven them into a beautiful narrative of early county history. I was thrilled to see a picture of my maternal grandmother in a group of ladies from the Burket Methodist Church. My children live out of state, but they are graduates of county schools - they will enjoy the copies I am sending them for Christmas. Thank you, Mr.Daniel Coplen, for your dedication - you have given us a beautiful history.
- Eye Transplant - Earning Public Trust - Art In The Park Eye Transplant Editor, Times-Union: Matthew Borsellino of Yonkers, N.Y., was born with a corneal opacity affecting his left eye.The cornea is the clear outer covering of the eye.If light cannot pass through, impaired vision results. At 4 months of age, a corneal transplant gave him sight in this eye.Somewhere parents of an infant the same age as Matthew gave consent for the eyes of their deceased child to be used for transplanting.Without this cornea from a human eye, Matthew's sight could not have been restored.Synthetic corneas have not yet proven satisfactory.
- Save Our Pets - Firearms Laws - Justice - Sanity In Government - Putt Endowment - Animal Shelter Save Our Pets Editor, Times-Union: Dogs - cats, animals Why in the world do we kill these animals? Why not charge $10 to adopt a cat, and $15 - $20 to adopt a dog? I believe more of these "Friends" would be adopted if fees were lowered. Another idea! Why not get permission to have some of these "Friends" placed in retirement homes, where they would get lots of love. Save out pets.
- Taking Care Of Kids - School Board - Protect Marriage - School Salaries Taking Care Of Kids Editor, Times-Union: A rash of incidences of young children being left unattended in cars has local child protective services officials concerned. "This summer, and especially over the past couple of weeks we've had a number of young children left unattended in cars," said Peggy Shively, director of the Kosciusko County Division of Family and Children, which manages child protective services. The most common reasons, according to Shively, that parents give for leaving their children unattended in a vehicle include not wanting to wake up a sleeping toddler or the difficulty of maneuvering multiple children from a car, through a parking lot and into a store.
