- Religious Freedom - Responds To Wolkins - Questions Religious Freedom Editor, Times-Union: This is the third part of my letter dealing with with the subject of freedom of religion. The previous two parts were printed in the Times-Union Sept.8 and Oct.14 with a list of 27 sources of information that were used to develop a definition or guiding principle, most of those sources of information are available at the Warsaw Community Public Library for those who would be interested in doing their own research.

- Teen Drunk Driving - Swope Accident - Alienated - Smoking Ordinance Teen Drunk Driving Editor, Times-Union: As a teenager I am concerned for the people on the road.At the age of 14 I realize others make mistakes while driving. But since when is drinking and driving a mistake? For some it is a death sentence for themselves or for others. It should not be that way, people should feel safe driving.People of today's society are not teaching their children the importance of the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol. As a teenager I realize there is a lot of peer pressure.I also realize you can say "no."I do not want to be killed by drugs or alcohol one way or another. That is why I am not afraid to admit that I have never tried anything.

- Middle Ground - No Child Left Behind? - Fuel Cost Middle Ground Editor, Times-Union: Re: Don Guard's letter to the editor. To answer Mr.Guard's question: I did vote, and sided with 78 percent of forward-thinking New Orleanians in choosing John Kerry. It's nice to see the venom of Mr.Guard is still intact.I guess it's better to be mean-spirited and misguided than nothing at all, right? And to be a proud member of a movement that lately (read: under George W.Bush's leadership) prides itself on its divisiveness? I feel sympathy for blind souls such as yourself, Mr.Guard.If only the world were as black-and-white as you apparently think it is.

- Judge Huffer - Senator Adams - Rural Landscape - School Board - Gun Control Judge Huffer Editor, Times-Union: County taxpayers, once again our judicial system has failed us. It has not only failed us but also our children. I was in shock when I read the Saturday edition of the Times-Union Court Briefs. But then I was not surprised to see the ruling came out of Superior Court 1 (Judge Huffer). For those of you that missed it, a 30-year-old man was given a one and one-half year suspended sentence for repeatedly striking an 11-year-old with a hockey stick because she had taken a toy away from his son and made him cry.

- Hypocrisy - Gun Control - Stolen Purse Hypocrisy Editor, Times-Union: "Better to be free in a society with risks than a safe slave in a dictatorship" (Charlie Reece). Thanks, Charlie.Wouldn't it be great if the media, in general, and the Washington hypocrites would hype truths such as that rather than the constant barrage of lies and hyperbole. Now, republicans and democrats are jumping on the bandwagon because they are afraid of the political backwash if they voice their consciences rather than what the latest poll portends.

Letters to the Editor 05-29-1998

- Flag Etiquette - Moral Absolutes - The Blame Game - Marathon For Leukemia Flag Etiquette Editor, Times-Union: This letter will, I fear, offend some segments of local society, and for that I apologize. Recent events involving deaths of law enforcement personnel, the "National Police Officers Day" and the deaths of school children, have all resulted in the flying of the flag of the United States at half-staff. ONLY the President of the United States may cause the flag to be displayed at half-staff over federal buildings, military camps and Navy ships. It may be flown thus for a period of mourning not to exceed 30 days for the death of one who served, or was serving at time of death, in a "national" capacity.

- Colorado Aftermath - Colorado Tragedy - Colorado Horror - Mushroom Hunting - Athletic Code Colorado Aftermath Editor, Times-Union: In the wake of the shootings in Colorado come cries from all levels of government that something be done to stop the violence.Probably the most disturbing aspects of these attacks is they're coming so unexpectedly. As Saturday's editorial reminded us, we shouldn't be so surprised.Graphic violence and pornography have become protected forms of speech. The sanctity of human life has been implicitly, if not explicitly, denied by the entertainment industry, our universities and our courts. However, before we look too far for the causes of this great tragedy, we should look a littler closer to home.

- Two Messages From Fatal Accident - A Grieving Mother - Thanks From Winona Lake Two Messages From Fatal Accident Editor, Times-Union: My name is Yolanda Kuta.I am a wife and mother. My husband and I had seven children, ranging from the ages of 15 to 29.On June 12, we lost our 17-year-old and future daughter-in-law along with a neighbor child to a drunk driver. Our granddaughter along with another young lady were seriously injured in this senseless accident. There are two messages that need to be addressed from this tragedy, and if I can just get one across, I feel that Aaron's death was not just a statistic.

Letters to the Editor 07-21-1998

- Nightmare After OWI Arrest Nightmare After OWI Arrest Editor, Times-Union: I'm writing this to tell you a story of a normal citizen picked up for OWI.One night when getting off of work after 12 hours, I stopped with friends to have a few drinks. After a couple of hours, I got in my car and proceeded to follow two friends and headed home. After getting 1-1/2 miles from home, these headlights loomed up behind me from nowhere and I was pulled over not for driving poorly but for having a plate light out on my car.

Letters to the Editor 07-27-1998

- More On Softball Game - Organizing A Class Reunion More On Softball Game Editor, Times-Union: Well I guess I have to spell this out.But first get your facts straight. I admit I didn't know about the 10 player rule, but I also don't know how many girls are going to show up until game time. Not a good time to look for a pitcher. The girl who was going to try and pitch for me who is also my catcher was not there.I had two players who said I could call up a minor league pitcher.I knew what the game would be without a pitcher, so did you.Not a game but a landslide victory for you.Do you think my girls had fun losing that bad? They did not.I never said you personally asked us to give up, the umpire did.

- Kroger Store - Seat Belt Laws - Haircuts Kroger Store Editor, Times-Union: It is with sincere appreciation for the delightful experience of grocery shopping at the Warsaw Kroger Store these past 49 years without the feeling you were the "Combo Grocery-Liquor Store."I regret, though, this will no longer be the case.

Letters to the Editor 06-09-1999

- Jail Conditions - Jail Expansion - Textbook Fees - Nuclear Weapons - School Violence Jail Conditions Editor, Times-Union: This is to the lady responding to my letter about the jail conditions. Points about jail conditions were not taken as intended - You are right - three days is very little time to serve in jail compared to three years or 30 years. To someone who's never been there, three days feels like three months.Point was, even if there three to six months, clean sheets are out of the question.

Letters to the Editor 05-28-1999

- Stamp Out Hunger - Don't Sell Guns - Buy Your Kid A Gun - Thanks From Fashion Show Stamp Out Hunger Editor, Times-Union: Combined Community Services would like to express our gratitude to the Warsaw postal workers and their families for all the hard work they put into a successful "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive. On a wet and cold Saturday, the postal workers kept to their slogan and delivered around 5,000 pounds of nonperishable food items to CCS. For five years in a row, the postal workers have been delivering this food for CCS at a time in the year when our pantry is starting to run low.The food that was collected will stay in Kosciusko County and put food on the table for many families that are in need of food during the summer months.
