Whitko Falls To NorthWood In OT On Senior Night

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊFriday night was senior night at Whitko High School, and the Wildcats were looking for a win over NorthWood. However, despite a hard-fought game the Whitko squad was unable to outlast the Panthers and fell 82-80 in overtime. NorthWood started the first quarter by taking a 4-0 lead after Ryne Lightfoot and Josh Sabo hit back-to-back baskets. Then at the 6:47 mark, Whitko senior Derrick Day split the net with a three-pointer, and streams of toilet paper flowed from the stands, as is tradition when the first Wildcat basket is scored on senior night. Milford Troubled By County Zoning Decisions

MILFORD - When it comes to variances, exceptions and rezonings, sometimes not everyone is happy with the rulings by the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals. Recently, the Milford Town Council and town officials have been voicing their displeasure with the boards' decisions that affect Milford. They say not only do they want more consistency with the boards' decisions, but also more control. Monday, attorney Richard Helm discussed options and ideas with the town council on how the town can solve their complaints with the county boards. If the town wants its own plan commission to rule on variances and exceptions, not only would the town need to provide its own staff, but would also need people to serve on the boards. As for rezonings, the town, as the legislative body, already has the final say. If the town just wants more input over variances and special exceptions, the town needs to have a spokesperson at the meetings.

Nature's Fuel Asks For Abatement

Nature's Fuel, Atwood, a company that manufactures fuel pellets, is considering a facility on the old G&M Tire property in Atwood. The county council heard a tax abatement request Thursday for the business during its regular meeting. Attorney Steve Snyder, representing Nature's Fuel, said the fuel pellets currently are made with compressed sawdust and a patent is pending to use cornstalks as the main component of the pellets. The company is requesting a 10-year tax abatement on personal property valued at $3.2 million. Councilman Larry Teghtmeyer said it is customary for the council to approve a five-year abatement. Snyder said the paperwork will reflect the five-year abatement at the Jan.11 council meeting. Currently, Primix owns the land at 510 E.Main St., Atwood. Nature's Fuel plans to use the eight-acre site for manufacturing the fuel for pellet stoves. The rest of the land will be used for warehousing and distribution.

E. Coli Found In Leesburg Storm Sewer

LEESBURG - A contaminated storm sewer system may force the Leesburg Town Council's hand on the wastewater treatment project. Town council president Bob Cleveland received a warning from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management in late December. The letter said water samples taken from Kohler Ditch in April showed unacceptable levels of E.coli.IDEM will be keeping an eye on how Leesburg addresses the situation. In a newsletter sent to town residents, Cleveland said the town has two options: Put in a wastewater treatment system or do a dye test at each residence to see where the leak is coming from. The contamination is forcing the town to look at the issue with a new urgency."We must make a decision in 18 months to two years or the state will make it for us," Cleveland said at Monday's council meeting.

Plank, Tandy Honored By WHA

Warsaw Mayor Jeff Plank was honored for his contributions to the city's housing needs at Monday's Warsaw Housing Authority meeting. Plank, who is retiring in March after 13 years as mayor, has made several appointments to the board while being a strong supporter of the WHA. "In any organization the tone is set by the administration," said Vickie Provine, executive director of the WHA."His heart for the people and his desire to provide programs has enabled others to provide programs," she said. "Why so many of our projects were successful in helping housing needs in the city of Warsaw is because Jeff Plank was instrumental in encouraging us and helping us find the source of funds that we needed," Provine said. Provine said Plank was instrumental in helping secure the support of the city council on many WHA programs: • In the past nine years the WHA has received three funding increments.
