- Positive Incidents - Silver Lake Sham - Anniversary Thanks - Locker Theft - Lockouts - Educational Tragedy - Senior Center - 'Water Costs - Potter's World Positive Incidents Editor, Times-Union: This is an open letter to the parents and other patrons of the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation -ÊPart 2. Last August, I wrote to encourage parents and guardians to be involved in their children's education. As the school year nears the halfway point, I would like to share some positive incidents that I have witnessed at the high school. Please understand, this is only a partial list.

Memories Stir Fondness For Mom On Mother's Day

Nurse, teacher, counselor, cook, chauffeur, housekeeper, personal assistant, the list goes on and on. What do you get when you roll all these occupations into one? A mother! From the moment a child is born, the duties of its mother are endless. From the middle-of-the-night feedings of a newborn to the preparation of high school graduation for the teenager. And my mom was no exception. She worked outside the home, only to come home to all the motherly duties that went along with raising four children (and a husband). But through it all she always had a smile on her face, a positive attitude and plenty of love to go around.

- Renewed Hope in Humanity - Community College Renewed Hope in Humanity Editor, Times-Union: It is amazing how one little act of kindness can renew your hope for America. The following incident has given me the proof I needed, when there is so much turmoil in the world, that there are indeed many people out there who will go above and beyond the call of duty to be kind and neighborly.

- Death Penalty And Abortion - Class Of 1990 - Guitar Woodies - Animal Welfare League Death Penalty And Abortion Editor, Times-Union: There have been two subjects during the presidential debates that have gotten a lot of media attention. One subject is capital punishment. There are a lot of protests outside prisons, saying that capital punishment is wrong. It troubles me to see fellow Christians and pastors saying that it is wrong to take a convicted killer's life - that it is God's responsibility to judge and punish the prisoner, and that God is the God of love and forgiveness.

- Oldest Companies Oldest Companies Editor, Times Union: I enjoyed reading the stories recently in the Times-Union about the oldest companies in Warsaw that are still in business today. You left out one - American Brattice Cloth Corp.(now known as ABC Industries Inc). The company was founded by my father, Daniel B.Mikesell, in 1926.The company, after being a part of the Peabody group, was reorganized by Steve Rufenbarger in 1989, and a new name was chosen - ABC Industries Inc. We still make brattice cloth and ventilation tubing for the mining industry, but have added several industrial products, mostly in the field of ventilation.ABC people have put our products in many parts of the world, all from our headquarters right here in Warsaw.

- Column Appreciated - Silver Lake School - Trashy People Column Appreciated Editor, Times-Union: I am writing in response to Deb Hobbs' letter criticizing Mr.Gerard.I read many columnists and I think Mr.Gerard is an excellent writer.I look forward to his column every Saturday.Saturday's column about the weather was very funny.I have often told friends that he should be syndicated as he is better than many national writers. The "cheese with your whine" line was cute, but it was not original as it was used by Dr.Phil in O Magazine this past summer. At least Mr.Gerard doesn't plagiarize. Keep up the good work, Mr.Gerard - you are appreciated by many.

- Unneeded School Conflict - Blessings Bestowed Unneeded School Conflict Editor, Times-Union: It seems the Concerned Citizens for Quality Education group is stirring up unnecessary conflict. We've hard their innuendo about the elected Warsaw Board of School Trustees and how they don't care about the children. These board members probably wouldn't even consider the position if they weren't committed to a quality education for WCS. While many of us have adjusted to changes made across the spectrum of budget cut options, the Concerned Citizens for Quality Education group continues to doggedly fight for their "rights." n Title I services have been cut back in K-2 grades. n The elementary counseling program has been eliminated.

- Lost Property - Big Bang - Tired Of Tax Saga Lost Property Editor, Times-Union: Response to "Lost Property," Marc L.Powell. Marc, you suggested my brother blame his family and friends for his loss of property, but you also suggest he not blame the Treasurer's Office because they are "elected officials bound to uphold the laws mandated to each individual office."So let's look at the facts in this case: 1.Tom & Eleanor Huffman owned (debt free) property 62 + or - acres just east of Etna Green. 2.Tom & Eleanor did have an agent who lived in Tennessee, and paid the property taxes annually for them while they were missionaries in Australia.

- Understanding The Kingdom - Radical Republicans - Bad Reporter - Disgusting Decision Understanding The Kingdom Editor, Times-Union: From most church pulpits we hear again and again the words "The Kingdom of God."Let us seek to understand this kingdom. Some questions are: Is it here? Is it out of this world? Is it coming? Is it a gift? Is it earned? How can we get into it? How important is it? Or is it? With such a rash of shootings, suicides, rapes, abuses, giant companies' leaders's stealings, we are forced to realize the kingdom is absent here. The great Russian novelist Dostoevsky wrote: "If there is no God, anything is permissable."He thereby wrote a phrase that proves what is not the kingdom of God.

- Defense Of Opinion - Monitor Downtown Parking - Outraged - Nuclear Option - Shop With A Cop Defense Of Opinion Editor, Times-Union: I would like to say a few things in Gene May's defense. In defense of his constitutional right to freedom of speech and his undeniable right to freedom of thought. Although I have not read that many of his letters it has been brought to my attention that he is now receiving hate mail as a result of his criticism of the Bush administration and his views of spirituality. This is abhorrent in and of itself regardless of the extremity of his views.
