Lake City Bank Announces Nearly Three Dozen Promotions

Lake City Bank announced the following promotions.

Valley Goes 2-0 In Basketball Jamboree

Dean Foster was there, sitting up in the stands, scrawling notes. His Elkhart Central team plays Warsaw to open the season, so he was scouting the Tigers while he had the chance. Al Rhodes had the tie on, the one with basketballs on it, the one worn every game. And the last quarter, the one between Tippecanoe Valley and Warsaw, seemed more like a regular season game than eight minutes of a jamboree. That quarter by far caused the loudest crowd reactions of the evening, just because, well, it was Valley and Warsaw. Basketball is back. Warsaw hosted its jamboree Saturday evening.Tippecanoe Valley went 2-0, Warsaw 1-1, Whitko 1-1 and Wawasee 0-2. Warsaw 25, Whitko 13 Six-foot-four forward Tom Krizmanich scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead Warsaw past Whitko. The Tigers cruised from start to finish, jumping ahead 14-2.

NorthWood Earns Trip To Semistate

NAPPANEE - Friday's class 3A regional final game between seventh ranked Fort Wayne Harding and the 10th ranked NorthWood Panthers was a tale of who had the better disciplined team and a tale of two halves. Fortunately for the Panthers, their better half came after the intermission in their 18-7 victory at Andrews Field. NorthWood won the toss to start the game, but chose to defer to the second half giving the ball immediately to Harding's tandem of 1,000 yard rushers, Sean Casey and Quincy Bright. The Hawks started their first drive on the 1-yard line, and kept posession for 6:35 during a 15-play drive.Harding's offense couldn't come up with a score, and turned the ball over to NorthWood at the Panther 34-yard line, but they would get it right back. On NorthWood's first offensive play, quarterback Charlie Roeder completed a 16-yard pass to Aaron Huber, but Huber fumbled the ball right back.

Letters to the Editor 12-07-1998

- Wawasee Basketball - Gospel Concert - Thanks To K Of C - Patrick's Back - Claypool Crash Wawasee Basketball Editor, Times-Union: Mr.Freeman, the first thing you need to do is apologize to the Fairfield basketball program for your comment of a high school version of Northwestern. They shot 80 percent as a team during the game against Wawasee.Northwestern has never shot 80 percent in a game. That is probably like me saying that your soccer skills are like a high school version of Indiana State. They do not even have a team.

Warsaw Boys Win Triple Overtime Game

Though saddled with injuries, Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team was healthy enough to pull out a 77-73 win over visiting Northern Lakes Conference opponent NorthWood Friday in the Tiger Den. Senior starter Andrew Holladay missed the game after suffering a concussion in last week's loss to Concord, while classmate Michael Wienhorst played with a brace on his right knee and junior Shaun Cabrera again played with a sore back. Neither the NorthWood Panthers or the bumps and bruises denied the Tigers, as they improved to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in the NLC.

Squires Clinch Share Of TRC Title

NORTH MANCHESTER - Though a perfect season fell by the wayside, Manchester was still able to salvage a conference crown. The Squires clinched a share of the Three Rivers Conference title Saturday night with a 43-37 win over visiting Tippecanoe Valley in girls basketball action. "We treated our last few games as if we were in the sectionals. If you lose the game you are done.We wanted our name on that conference trophy," said Squire head coach Mark Underwood. Manchester appeared as though it was going to run away with the game in the first quarter. They jumped out to a 9-2 lead midway through the opening quarter.Valley had trouble getting off some good shots during that stretch of the game. Using a small run of their own along with defense the Vikings began to claw their way back in to the game.Led by Hannah Krueger, Valley outscored Manchester 7-4 the rest of the quarter to close the game within four at 13-9.

Vikings Win Physical Battle Over Trojans

AKRON -ÊThe boys basketball teams from Tippecanoe Valley and Triton must have been listening the the 1980s Olivia Newton-John tune "Physical" before Friday night's game in Akron. The rough and tumble game went to Valley 79-62, but not before 40 fouls were called and two players fouled out of the game. But neither coach was complaining about the physical nature of the game. "Not too many teams that we play will give us a physical game like this," said Triton coach Mike McBride."We tend to struggle with physical teams, we've been that way all year. This game will help prepare us for the sectional." Not only was the game physical, it was heavy on the offense as well. The fast-paced game led to many scoring opportunities early. The Vikings got on the board first as Valley sophomore David Lash netted the first basket of the game. And then the race was on. The teams traded baskets for the entire first quarter, with neither squad going up by more than four points.

Triton Gives Valley A Second-Half Scare

BOURBON - Anyone who left the Triton-Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball game at halftime Friday night will be surprised to learn the final score was 79-72. The Vikings were up 47-23 at the half, but Triton fought back in the second half to make a game of it. "The second half was pure heart.Effort and heart," said Triton coach Mike McBride."They fought and competed. It was unbelievable. Our kids just refused to give in, it was a great effort." While Triton played an impressive second half, Valley played just as well in the first two quarters. The first quarter saw a lot of run-and-gun action.Triton's Josh Moore scored the first basket of the game, but Valley's Corey Vanlaningham answered quickly with a three-pointer. Tyson Blackford hit a Trojan basket to make the score 4-3 Triton, but Trey Eaton hit a long shot to put the Vikes up 6-4. Blackford answered again to tie the game at 6-all.Then Vanlaningham hit a basket to put Valley back up, 8-6.

Big Fish Brings Back Fond Memories

My parents grew up in Wisconsin. Before I was born, they moved to Indiana. So even though I was born here in Hoosierland, I still spent a couple weeks each summer in northern Wisconsin visiting relatives - and muskie fishing. I got hooked on muskie fishing from the first time my dad introduced me to it when I was just 9 or 10 years old. You know they call Minnesota the land of 10,000 lakes.Up around the Flambeau Flowage in northern Wisconsin, where I learned to fish for muskies, they called them the fish of 10,000 casts. Muskie fishing is more like hunting than fishing, in a way. They are very cagey creatures. They seem to be pretty smart. And when you do finally manage to hook one, they fight like tigers. I know some people are averse to having dead creatures hanging on their walls.Too bad.I have three. Two muskies and a walleye. The muskies I caught during a two-week period in the summer way back when I was in college, more than 20 years ago.

Squires Pound Warriors

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊAfter squeaking by Three Rivers Conference rival Whitko 35-27 in overtime last week, the Manchester Squires football team took its 2-0 conference record up against a power team of the past, the North Miami Warriors. The Warriors, also 2-0 in the TRC, were looking to put a dent in the Squires' TRC title run. Coming into Friday, Manchester junior running back Josh Peden was leading the TRC in rushing, averaging 6.5 yards a carry and running for 685 yards in 105 attempts. That was a major concern for the Warriors. In last week's game against Whitko, Peden sprained an ankle in overtime, thus making him questionable for the kickoff. Peden didn't play a down, but the Squires still rolled by the Warriors 41-6.
