Rae of Sunshine Charitable Foundation Inc. officially launched its mission-driven efforts to serve individuals and families facing economic hardship.
The Christian-based 501(c)(3) public charity was founded in memory of Rae Sachiko Alejado Kaleohano, who died in 2023, and honors her by providing support and change to communities in need. The foundation aims to bridge gaps in housing security and offer critical resources that uplift lives and restore dignity, according to a provided news release.
“Our vision is to build brighter communities —together,” said Perry Kaleohano, founder and executive director of Rae of Sunshine. “This organization is not only a tribute to Rae’s life of grace and generosity, but a living promise to continue her legacy of service and faith.”
On Monday after a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce, Perry said he looked back at what Rae had done in the past with friends and how “she’s so lovable and how everyone just loves her and I thought back to see what is it that she does or want me to continue as a legacy for her.”
He wanted a way to focus his energy after Rae’s death and honor her and at the same time.
“I’m a God-fearing man. We’re commanded to help others. I never had that opportunity in the past to do so. And this is perfect timing, God-driven, that is for my wife and for God,” he said.
Two ideas of where Perry could help popped into his head, which became the foundation’s core initiatives:
• Affordable Housing Assistance – Providing financial support, advocacy and collaborative solutions to ensure safe, stable homes for underserved populations.
• Community Welfare Programs – Offering aid, education and outreach services that meet urgent needs and foster long-term well-being.
Since Rae of Sunshine started, Perry said he has been to a lot of meetings and getting out there and meeting community members and visiting other nonprofits, like food pantries.
While Perry said the foundation doesn’t have much funding yet, he plans to go out and start touching lives “and eventually the funds will come.” He plans on putting on fundraisers, but doesn’t have any planned yet.
Perry said once his foundation gets more funding, he wants to use a coalition spearheaded by Ben Logan, Habitat for Humanity of Kosciusko County executive director, and the Kosciusko County Community Foundation as a way to help people.
In addition to program development, Rae of Sunshine is actively seeking partnerships, individual donations, corporate sponsors and grant opportunities to expand its reach and deepen its impact across Indiana and beyond, stated the release.
