A Michigan man was arrested after allegedly molesting a child between the ages of 8 to 12.
Joseph Alan Sarber, 38, Kalamazoo, Mich, is charged with two counts of child molesting, level 1 felonies; and one count of child molesting, a level 4 felony.
He was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 10:28 a.m. Friday on a $100,250 preliminary bond.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Indiana Department of Child Services regarding alleged child molestation. A deputy spoke with someone who said the child reported being molested by Sarber. A case was opened and the child was referred to Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center for a forensic interview.
On June 10, 2024, the child went to Safe Harbor and a forensic interview was conducted. During the interview, the child reported they had not seen Sarber since they were 12. The child said the first time something happened was when the child was about 8 or 9. The child said Sarber began touching the child in a sexual manner. The child said the sexual assaults occurred multiple times from when the child was about 8 or 9 to about 12 and occurred in Sarber’s apartment, a hotel, camping area and in Sarber’s work and personal vehicles.
A KCSO detective learned Sarber was convicted of charges stemming from a federal investigation into the possession of child sexual assault or exploitation material, according to court documents. During the course of the federal investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation located child sexual assault material on devices owned or possessed by Sarber. Also, the FBI located explicit chats between Sarber and another user in which Sarber described sexually molesting the child. Sarber stated in the chat that the molestation started when the child was 9.
The detective talked to Sarber in a federal prison in Pennsylvania where he was serving a sentence of receiving child pornography. Sarber denied sexually touching the child. Sarber said his conversations in the pedophile chat group were him fantasizing about molesting the child, but he never actually did molest the child.
