Be A Superhero By Donating To The Salvation Army, And Get Free Comic Books
May 1, 2025 at 6:39 p.m.

A person doesn’t have to be able to fly, wear a mask or be invincible to be a superhero.
They can do something as simple as donate non-perishable food items to The Salvation Army. And if you donate them Saturday at Chimp’s Comix, 919 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, that can also land you some additional free comic books.
This year’s Free Comic Book Day at Chimp’s is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Each person that walks through the day can receive two free comics.
“For each non-perishable food item that you bring in to donate - that we will give to our local Salvation Army - that will get you an additional comic. No duplicates, please,” said Chimp’s owner Nick Kelley.
This is the 21st Free Comic Book Day at Chimp’s and the 20th year the business has collected food items for The Salvation Army in conjunction with the annual event. Each year, between 1,500 and 2,000 non-perishable food items are donated.
Free Comic Book Day is a national event held the first Saturday in May to promote reading and comic books.
In many years, Free Comic Book Day aligns with the release of a new comic book-based movie. This year, that’s Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*,” with “Superman” and “Fantastic Four” coming out this summer.
As for the comic book selections this year for Free a Book Day, Kelley said there are about 140 to choose from, with 36 being brand new ones.
Of those, he highlighted the Iron Man and Spider-Man kids’ book, Minecraft, MegaMan, Star Wars, Power Rangers, a Pokemon Nanoblock sample kit, the D.C. All-In special, Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Transformers, Gargoyles, Thundercats, Diablo and Conan.
“There’s stuff for all ages, teen and mature,” Kelley stated.
There also will be a number of sales at Chimp’s on Saturday for customers to take advantage of, including 35% off back issues of comics, 25% off signed comics, 25% off new graphic novels (TPBS), 20% off comic sets, 15% off non-key CGC wall comics, all 50-cent comics are 20 cents each and all $1 books are 30 for $20.
“Last year there were good, long lines. I’m hopeful to see it again this year. I’m hoping to get more canned goods than normal, but we never know until the end of the day, of course,” Kelley stated.
Other than the free comics, he said the best thing about Free Comic Book Day was, “Helping people locally through the Salvation Army and the food drive.”
