Tippecanoe Audubon Society Celebrates 50 Years With Free, Family-Friendly Events

NORTH MANCHESTER – In 2025, the Tippecanoe Audubon Society (TAS) is soaring into its 50th year of conservation, education and appreciation of the natural world.
To celebrate this milestone, TAS invites the public to join TAS at one of the free, family-friendly events throughout the year. Whether a seasoned birder, a casual nature enthusiast or simply curious about the feathered friends in the backyard, there’s something for everyone, according to a news release from TAS.
For half a century, TAS has been dedicated to protecting and celebrating north central Indiana’s rich bird life and inspiring people to connect with nature. TAS aims for the 50th celebration to bring together people of all ages to appreciate and protect the birds and habitats that make the region special.
Upcoming 50th Anniversary Events:
• April 3 – Getting to Know Your Backyard Birds Workshop (Kids 4 p.m., Adults 5 p.m., Pike Memorial Park, Akron)
An opportunity for beginners! Learn bird identification tips, how to attract birds to your yard and the basics of birdwatching. The event is in partnership with Akron Carnegie Public Library.
• April 8 – Cranes Over Indiana and Annual Meeting (6 p.m., North Manchester Public Library)
Join Sam Urquidez from the International Crane Foundation as participants explore the incredible world of Sandhill and Whooping Cranes. A short annual meeting will follow. The event is in partnership with North Manchester Public Library.
• April 12 – Taylor Woods Field Trip (9-10 a.m.) a.m. Weed Wrangle (10 a.m. to noon)
Enjoy a guided hike through this TAS wildlife sanctuary, then stay to help remove invasive plants during our Weed Wrangle event. The event is in partnership with the Kosciusko Water and Woodland Invasive Partnership.
• May 3 – Oppenheim Woods Field Trip (9:30 a.m.)
Spring wildflowers and migratory birds await at this TNC preserve near Lake Tippecanoe.
• May 10 – Big May Day Bird Count (9-10:30 a.m.)
Join birders worldwide for the Global Big Day! Learn from TAS members how to use the eBird app to report your sightings at one of our designated locations: Pike Lake Boardwalk (Warsaw), Pisgah Marsh Boardwalk (North Webster) or Baker Wood (Silver Lake).
• May 17 – Preserve Stewardship Day (1-3 p.m., Flory-Gemmer Marsh)
Help control invasive thistle at our beautiful wetland preserve while enjoying the outdoors.
• June 14 – Edna Spurgeon Field Trip (9:30 a.m.)
Explore old-growth forest and unique glacial formations at this historic ACRES preserve.
• July 19 – Annual Picnic
Join TAS for food, fellowship, and a special presentation by Dr. Jessica Outcalt on managing habitats for migratory songbirds.
All events are free and open to the public. Whether you’re looking for a fun outdoor experience, a way to give back to nature, or a chance to learn from experts, this anniversary year is packed with opportunities, the release states.
