SOUTH WHITLEY – At Tuesday night's meeting, the South Whitley Town Council accepted $1.425 million in Community Crossings Matching Grant funding from the Indiana Department of Transportation.
The Community Crossings program provides funding to municipalities across Indiana to repair and improve local roads and bridges. This latest installment will go toward street work on Mulberry Street, from Subway to the high school, which should be completed before the 2025–26 school year begins.
In new business, council approved utility adjustments for several local residents and tabled one adjustment pending receipt of proof that the leak has been fixed.
Council heard from a local resident whose alley is overrun with grass off Elm Street. Council President Brock Waterson said he will talk with Utilities Superintendent Kent Slater about getting the grass and dirt scraped off the alleyway using the town's equipment.
Park Board President Randy Simpson reported that an election of officers was held at the last meeting.
In his report, Town Marshal Mikel Vandevender discussed final inspections for building permits in town and whether or not the town of South Whitley was ultimately responsible for those inspections following a conversation he had with the county health inspector.
Town attorney Greg Hockemeyer will look into the requirements on final inspections.
At Vandevender's and Clerk-Treasurer Alyssa Knepple's request, the council voted to require the department's school resource officer (SRO) to have their timesheets signed by a school employee such as the athletic director, in addition to Vandevender, and for the SRO to turn in comp time requests on a regular pay period schedule.
Council will next meet at 6:30 p.m. March 25.
