John Martin Kohler, of Winona Lake, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, Jan. 13, 2025. He passed away at Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital at the age of 79.
He was born on July 8, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Gertrude Gallagher Kohler and Kenneth Robert Kohler. John spent his childhood in Philadelphia and graduated from Frankfort High School in 1963. He earned his associates degree from Philadelphia College of Bible in 1965 and later in his life received his bachelors degree in accounting from Ivy Tech in Warsaw.
John met a lovely lady by the name of Miriam A. Jeunnette and they were married on June 8, 1968. They were blessed with raising four children and celebrated 56 years of marriage together before he passed away. John and Miriam moved their family to Winona Lake in 1986 where John worked at Wes Miller Insurance as well as Word Publishing. He later became a familiar face at Owens Supermarket in Warsaw, holding a number of positions prior to retiring in 2022.
Throughout his life John always had a fascination with model trains that he never lost. He could always be found working on crossword puzzles and word find books. Most of all he dearly loved his family especially his grandchildren. He loved to serve his Lord as a longtime member of Winona Lake Grace Church. John will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Miriam J. Kohler, Winona Lake; four sons: Brian (Katrina) Kohler, Clarksville; Dwight (Geri) Kohler, North Pole, Alaska; Todd (Jennifer) Kohler, Warsaw; Eric (Terra) Kohler, Helena, Ala.; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate John’s life at a memorial gathering from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 15 at the Hub of Winona Lake Grace Church, 1200 Kings Highway, Winona Lake. Burial will take place at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw. Arrangements were entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw.
Online condolences may be sent through the funeral home’s website at www.redpathfruthfuneralhome.com.
