WASHINGTON, D.C. - A North Manchester man was shot by the U.S. Secret Service near the White House on Sunday after a confrontation with agents.
Media reports identified the man as 27-year-old Andrew Dawson, North Manchester.
According to the Associated Press, the Secret Service says no one else was injured in the shooting that happened around midnight about a block from the White House. President Donald Trump was in Florida at the time of the shooting.
The Secret Service received information from local police about a "suicidal individual" who was traveling from Indiana and found the man's car and a person matching his description nearby. The man allegedly brandished a firearm, leading to a confrontation, the AP reported Sunday.
Dawson also allegedly had a knife in his possession.
"As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel," the Secret Service said in a statement.
The man was hospitalized. The Secret Service said his condition was "unknown."
The New York Post reported authorities believe Dawson wanted to commit “suicide by cop.”
The Metropolitan Police Department will investigate because the shooting involved law enforcement officers. The police department declined to provide more details to the Associated Press.
The New York Post reported Dawson has one previous arrest for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in 2018, but no other criminal record according to Indiana court records.
