Mason Charlton announced he will be seeking the Kosciusko County Council District 2 seat in the upcoming Republican caucus.
The seat became vacant after the accidental drowning of Councilman Mike Long on Thursday.
In his announcement, Charlton wrote, “I am profoundly saddened by the loss of Mike Long. He was a true patriot and a man of unwavering integrity. His dedication to our community was unparalleled, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.”
Charlton is a senior at Indiana University Indianapolis, where he is studying management and policy studies and will be graduating in May.
“Throughout my academic journey, I have gained valuable insights and skills that I am eager to apply in serving our community. My internship experiences have further solidified my commitment to public service and have equipped me with the practical knowledge needed to make a meaningful impact on the county council. I worked in the Indiana Senate as a legislative intern for two senators and the Public Policy Committee, where I honed my skills in state government and constituent services. Additionally, I have been elected as a Kosciusko County Republican state delegate in 2024, served as a Republican vice precinct committeeman and have been a lifelong Republican,” he said.
Charlton said he is running for county council because he is “driven by a strong desire to make a meaningful impact on our community, and to give back to a community that has supported and helped build me into the person I am today. I believe that new ideas and innovative solutions are essential for addressing the challenges we face.”
He stated his academic background in management and policy studies, combined with his practical experience through internships, equipped him with the knowledge and skills needed to serve effectively on the council.
“I believe in fiscal responsibility, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are managed wisely and efficiently. Economic development is a key focus, supporting local businesses and fostering a thriving economy. I am passionate about public safety, advocating for robust law enforcement and emergency services to keep our residents safe. Community engagement and traditional values are at the heart of my vision, promoting family-oriented policies and encouraging active participation in local governance. Together, these values will guide my efforts to serve and represent the people of Kosciusko County with integrity and dedication,” he stated.
He said it is imperative younger generations step up and become actively involved in local government.
“The future of our country, state and local communities' hinges on the fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that young adults can bring to the table. As the next generation of leaders, we have a unique opportunity to shape policies and initiatives that will drive our community to the next level. By taking the reins and leading with energy, dedication, and a strong commitment to positive change, young people can address the challenges of today while laying the foundation for a better and more prosperous tomorrow. Local government is where the impact on the community is most direct. Together, we can create a more dynamic and forward-thinking society that reflects the needs of today and ensures a thriving tomorrow,” he concluded.
