Whopper fans may not be able to get it their way in Warsaw while repairs are made to Burger King, 2920 Frontage Road, after a fire Tuesday.
Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory Chief Joel Shilling said they got called at 3:11 p.m. for a report of a fire in the broiler area of Burger King.
“The battalion chief arrived on scene and we had fire shooting out of the exhaust vent for the broiler, for the cooking hood,” he said. “The Ansul system, which is their extinguishing system inside the broiler, did go out and put the fire in check but we did some have extension into the structure, so that’s what the crews are in there doing now, is getting all that.”
The fire did get into the attic space area, but the firefighters extinguished that.
Shilling estimated they were able to get the fire under control within about 30 to 35 minutes.
“For the most part, (the fire) was contained to the broiler area, the hood area, which is what it’s designed to do. It’s supposed to catch that, contain that and hold that in the hood system,” he said.
Burger King employees and guests evacuated the restaurant at the time of the fire and notified the fire department. There were no injuries.
Assisting the WWFT were Winona Lake Fire Department, Warsaw Police Department, Lutheran EMS, Kosciusko County Health Department, Warsaw Building & Planning Department and NIPSCO.
An estimate on the damage - which was limited to the area of the kitchen where the burgers are broiled - was not available.
The district manager for Burger King did arrive on scene but was not able to provide any comments, including as to when the restaurant might be able to reopen.
Shilling said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
