Student Accomplishments Recognized During Triton School Board Meeting

BOURBON – Several students were recognized during the Triton School Board meeting Monday, although none were in attendance.
Travis Barnhart was recently named a Lilly Scholar Award recipient, said Superintendent Jeremy Riffle. Barnhart is the fourth Triton student to be a Lilly Scholar. The other three were Brittney Wishart Cook, Dan Stichter and Andrew Chupp.
Riffle said the scholarship will allow Barnhart to go to any Indiana college or university with all tuition paid. Barnhart is interested in possibly attending Purdue University for engineering.
Riffle also congratulated the varsity girls wrestling team for a successful first season. He congratulated Bailey Nicely, Andrea Ford and Braelyn Prater for advancing to regionals after Monday’s sectional matches. Nicely placed second, Ford placed third and Prater placed fourth.
Other placings during sectional matches were Macy Carson, who placed fifth; Jazmin Lemler, fifth; Rilee Bemish, sixth; and Danica Moore, sixth. The team placed sixth overall.
Triton FFA participated in Monday’s state crops, forestry and entomology contests.
Galen Harms placed 26th out of 62 contestants in entomology. The senior team made up of Rory Heckaman, Julianna Firestone, Cameron Emenaker and Kaitlyn Frick placed 20th out of 53 teams. The forestry junior team made up of Annie Creighbaum, Kelsey Frick, Addison Lemler and Izy Rettinger placed 10th of 23 times. The crops senior team made up of Barnhart, Colton Large, Brooke Kitch and Brayden Nifong placed second of 52 teams. Sierra and Savanah Hawley placed 35 out of 52 teams. Barnhart placed fourth and Large placed eighth as individuals. Crops junior individual Natalie Mevis placed 18 out of 70 and McKenna Emenaker placed 19th out of 70, Riffle said.
In other business, the board:
• Approved a quote from Tennis Courts Unlimited for $64,200 for crack fill and repairs for the tennis courts to be done after the spring season.
• Saw Tom McFarland, business manager, swear in Kevin Boyer and Wes Rettinger after being re-elected in November.
• Approved having the school board meeting on the second Monday of the month for 2025.
• Voted for Terri Barnhart to be board president, Kevin Boyer to be vice president and Steve Stichter to be secretary.
• Approved establishing a salary of $1,850 per year for school board members.
