Three Indiana Independent Orthopedic Practices Announce Merger To Form OrthoIndiana

January 9, 2025 at 5:41 p.m.

INDIANAPOLIS — Three of Indiana’s leading independent orthopedic practices - OrthoIndy in Indianapolis, Tri-State Orthopaedics in Evansville and Fort Wayne Orthopedics - announced their intent to merge.
Together, the practices will form OrthoIndiana, an integrated group that will deliver patient-centered, advanced, comprehensive orthopedic care across the state of Indiana, according to a news release.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to embark on this journey alongside Tri-State Orthopaedics and Fort Wayne Orthopedics - two outstanding orthopedic practices that share our vision for patient-centered care and independence,” said Dr. Ed Hellman, president of OrthoIndy. “Taking into account OrthoIndy’s alignment with the Lafayette Orthopedic Clinic in 2023, and its recently announced alignment with Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center to occur later this spring, OrthoIndiana is poised to become a statewide orthopedic network that is accessible to every Hoosier.”
The newly formed OrthoIndiana, which is expected to launch in mid-2025, will operate across 39 locations statewide, with 160 physicians and over 1,800 staff members.
“This scale makes OrthoIndiana one of the 10 largest independent orthopedic practices in the nation, and it ensures our practices can continue to provide top-tier orthopedic care while implementing strategies to avoid the rising costs associated with healthcare nationwide,” said Dr. Paul Perry, president of Tri-State Orthopaedics.
Under the new framework, each practice will maintain separate clinical operations, preserving the local patient-centered care that earned them their award-winning reputations. The practices will keep their current names and branding, with all three retaining their respective boards while participating in a new, shared board of directors.
“This merger aims to amplify our commitment to the patients we serve through the practices’ ability to share technology, clinical data, best practices and administrative expertise,” said Dr. Jerald Cooper, president of Fort Wayne Orthopedics.
Patients can be assured that there will be no immediate changes to scheduling, physician availability or insurance processes as the merger progresses, the release states. Integration will occur gradually to ensure a seamless transition that prioritizes uninterrupted patient care.
