AKRON – Janice L. “Jan” Pratt, 86, of rural Rochester, passed at 9:22 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, at Hickory Creek of Rochester.
Jan was born on Aug. 20, 1938, in Fulton County, the second child of the late Lavoy B. and Martha E. Mathews Hoffman. She was a 1956 graduate of Talma High School. Jan was a good student and was near the top of her class. She then attended Fort Wayne Business College.
Jan met her life’s mate at a rural youth square dance in 1956. Jan and Phil dated on weekends while both of them attended college. They married on June 21, 1958. They were married in the Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Smith providing God’s word. Their union provided a wonderful family, Cindy, Phil Jr., Barb and Sandy. During the younger years, she was the family leader, teacher and go-to person for most everything. She provided them with food, clothes and transportation. She had them involved with Sunday School, school work and 4-H. She ran from sporting practices and games, all while being a great wife and mother.
She is survived by her husband, Pastor Phillip Pratt; daughters: Cindy and husband Fred Sokol, of Elkhart; Barbara Newcomer, of Elkhart; Sandra and husband Mike Inglehearn, of Rochester; son, Phil “Pete” and wife Melinda Pratt, of Akron; grandchildren: Chase (Dani), Riann (Mike), Melea (Brandon), Tara, Tabitha (Andy), Bryce, Derek (Sierra), Michael Cassandra, Angelea (Eric) and William (Devin); and 17 great-grandchildren. They are all followers and she was truly blessed.
Also surviving is her sister, Sharon Beaman, of Kokomo; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Hoffman, of Bloomington; and Marlene Pratt, of Middlebury; and several nieces and nephews. Jan was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Richard Hoffman.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 3516 N. CR 650E, Rochester, with the Pratt family officiating. Her interment will take place following the funeral dinner in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery, 620 W. 3rd St., Rochester, at 1:30 p.m.
Visitation hours will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 in the Bethlehem Baptist Church of rural Rochester.
The arrangements have been entrusted to Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron.
