SYRACUSE – On Monday, Wawasee Community Schools (WCS) staff participated in an in-depth Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and Standard Reunification Method (SRM) training led by the I Love U Guys Foundation.
The morning began with classroom instruction at Wawasee Middle School, where district staff, along with county and local emergency response agencies, engaged in learning the key components of SRP and SRM. This was followed by an intensive, hands-on training session for teachers and administrators at the North Webster Community Center, which will serve as the district’s official reunification site in the event of any and all school reunification, according to a news release from WCS.
As part of the training, teachers and staff participated in a live SRM simulation, experiencing firsthand the structured process of safely reuniting students with their families following an emergency. The session was both intense and educational, reinforcing the critical importance of preparation, clear communication and defined procedures when implementing SRP and SRM.
“This was one of the most important trainings we’ve ever done,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Troyer. “While no one ever wants to face a situation that requires reunification, our staff now has the knowledge and experience to respond effectively using SRP and SRM to ensure the safety of our students and families.”
The training is part of WCS' ongoing commitment to school safety, ensuring that staff are well-prepared for crisis situations through proven, standardized response protocols, the release states. Staff members expressed appreciation for the hands-on experience, acknowledging the emotional weight of the training but recognizing its necessity in keeping students safe.
The district will continue to refine its emergency response protocols and provide ongoing training and communication to ensure that all staff and community members are equipped to handle crisis situations with confidence and care.
