BOURBON – Damage to the Triton School Corporation campus due to April 2’s EF-1 tornado that hit the town could be in the range of $250,000.
Superintendent Jeremy Riffle told the Triton School Board Monday an insurance assessor was at the school corporation on Friday.
Riffle said damage was done to the south end of the campus to fences, bleachers and high-jump mats. There was no damage to the buildings.
“That all adds up. We don’t know what the total number is yet, but in the end, just up adding the things we’ve purchased in the last few years, it’ll be a significant number,” he said, noting it’s all things the school corporation can replace.
He said the school corporation was very blessed to not have damage to the corporation’s instructional areas.
Riffle noted Triton needed to thank the Bourbon community.
“They have shown up and shown out over the last couple weeks in this difficult time,” Riffle said, noting he certainly does think the community does care for one another.
He thanked several people and organizations that helped people in the town around that time. He thanked Bourbon, Tippecanoe, Etna Green and Bremen fire departments for showing up to a fire at an area apartment building on April 3. He thanked the Bourbon Police Department, Indiana State Police and first responders for their assistance in the community cleanup and safety. There were others that helped with water, donating food and other resources. The Tippecanoe Valley High School baseball team helped clean up the baseball and softball fields.
In other business, the board:
• Approved Triton Elementary School Principal Christine Cooks’ retirement, effective at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
• Approved the purchase of a combination oven for the high school cafeteria from Tinkles for $22,832.27.
• Approved hiring Matt Arvesen as the junior high baseball head coach, Justina Faulkner as a weight room supervisor, Paul Williams as the junior high baseball supervisor and Diane Murphy as the junior high softball supervisor.
• Heard students at the elementary school started ILEARN Monday and the junior-senior high school students started the test today.
• Heard handrails have been added to the elementary school bleachers, the fire alarm system at the high school has been consolidated and the replacement of the roof at the elementary school will start in a couple weeks.
