BURKET – Burket Town Council discussed what to put in the next town newsletter Thursday.
At March’s meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Katina Webb volunteered to put the newsletter together.
Thursday, Council President Bill Rayburn suggested putting in a reminder that garbage pickup is on Thursdays and for people to try to keep lawn clippings off the street when mowing their lawn. He also suggested a reminder the townwide garage sale is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 6-7.
Webb suggested putting something about burning in town. Rayburn said he didn’t know how much burning people will do in the spring, but suggested they could put in that in order to get a burn permit, a council member has to sign one for the resident. Residents are also only permitted to burn things like yard waste and cannot burn things that have been treated.
Councilwoman Debra Deniston also suggested reminding people to watch their speed driving in town as more people will be out with the warmer weather.
The next newsletter will be mailed out in the next couple weeks.
In other business, the council:
• Was asked by resident Lisa Chaplin if there was going to be a town cleanup day. Rayburn said the council tried to do it last year, but couldn’t find anyone to do it.
• Heard the 2025 budget was approved by the state.
• Will order new stop signs for town. Rayburn said he wanted to order at least four new signs.
• Heard Rayburn will ask Street Superintendent Brad Bibler to start calling the railroad again this year to fix the crossing on Walnut Street.

Four Months
Editor, Times-Union: It took 250 years to build a nation that was the envy of the world. It took four months to tear it down. Countries that once admired, envied, and emulated us … countries that had our backs and gave their support and spilled their own blood defending us in our times of need … now unite against us in fear, disappointment, and disbelief. Countries that once were our greatest adversaries now laugh at us and relish our downfall and weakness. America is no longer first in anything; it is alone.
