Kosciusko County Republican Women’s Club donated $2,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters Friday.
Club President Ashley McGinnis said the money donated was raised through the club’s purse bingo event March 14 at Creighton’s, 4217 W. Old U.S. 30, Warsaw.
McGinnis said this was the fourth year the club put on the event. It was initially started because the club wasn’t really doing a lot in the community and they needed to raise money in order to do that. Club members came up with the idea to do a purse bingo event.
The first year “was extremely successful,” with 165 people at the event at The Owl’s Nest. A lot of money was raised and the club was able to donate to The Beaman Home.
“And we’ve done it every year since because we’ve got such positive feedback from it, so we continue to do it and we continue to have the support and we continue to do well,” she said.
Club members determine what organization they want to donate to by a vote.
Tammy Smith, Kosciusko County community development director with Big Brothers Big Sisters, said donations stay within the county to help support the organization. Funds go toward recruiting Bigs and vetting them through the process, including background checks and supporting case management after the matches.
“The case management involves checking in with the parent, the child, the school, the Big Brother or Big Sister and we’re there in case something happens, anything needs talked about,” Smith said.
It costs $2,200 per year per match.
Another thing BBBS does is hold at least one match activity, where the organization invites the matches to do a group activity, Smith said.
The data for Kosciusko County shows there are 4,000 at-risk children in the county with factors like income levels, single-parent households, being raised by grandparents and incarcerated parents, Smith said.
“We want to make sure every one of those kids has an adult in their life,” she said.
