Fixing Storm Damage May Require Permits

By Staff Report

Residents of Kosciusko County are reminded that with the recent storms, many structures in the community may have experienced damage.
Residents are strongly encouraged to report damages to the state of Indiana online at in211.org to assist in tracking the extent of these damages, according to a news release from Area Plan Director Matt Sandy.
Owners also are reminded that repairs and/or reconstruction activities to damaged structures may require a local permit from the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission as required by Kosciusko County Zoning Ordinance and Floodplain ordinance prior to the start of any reconstruction activity.
For more information on the permitting process, contact Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission at 574-372-2304.
Permits can be applied for either in person in the Area Plan Commission Office at 100 W. Center St., Warsaw, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or online at Kosciusko.in.gov under the online permit option.
In addition to permits, other steps owners should take before commencing repairs include:
• Contacting your agent or insurance company to file a claim.
• Check for structural damage before re-entering your home to avoid being trapped in a building collapse and confirm that power has been shut off until confirming the electrical has not been impacted.
• Take photographs of all of the damaged property, including discarded objects and structural damage.
